I personally think that Z should be captain right now. No doubt in my mind he will be the next captain.

Dats, IMO, is toward the bottom of the list as far as captain material is concerned. He can barely speak English and doesn't seem to say much. He is a great player, just not captain material in my book.

Z is has it all - skills, leadership, work ethic, class. The next Yzerman (or as close to him as can be).

I think that right now it is way to early to tell.

I hope to god that this is a freak back thing for Z and he will be fine in the next couple of days and then we will never here anything about his back for the rest of his career. I'm scared about it since it has now been an issue in back to back season. If he is healthy, then it will for sure to Z.

If not Z, well it's really hard to say. Dats doesn't seem like a captain to me. Could he become one in the near future, sure. We will have to wait and see on that one.

Other then those two, i can't think of another player currently on the team, that i see still being here after Lids is gone, who would be the next captain.

Lilja's the right man for the job. He fights for his teammates, he scores game winning goals, and he's by far the best looking player on the team, which is important for media purposes and marketability.

Zetts will be the next Captain he's perfect for the job . he's a roll model and a leader . he sets a great example by having such high standards .

I'm not quite so sure about that. I mean, they are rotating the alternate captain to Datsyuk, and not to Maltby or Holmstrom. Not that either of them couldn't handle it, I just think they would likely give it to Dats, and maybe an "A" to one of the others.. (if for whatever reason it didn't go to Z, which I don't ever see happening)

I knew someone was going to bring up that point.

You have to remember that wearing the A is a far different responsibility than wearing the C.

Dats will always be an alternate Cpt. but IMO will never be wear the C here.

The leadership qualities that Homer Drapes and Malts have, show that they are better aptain material than Dats.

But with all that said it is going to be Zetterberg no doubt

Isn't this all just a teensy bit premature? We just locked up Nick for two more seasons, and you know as long as he is here he will be captain. We know Dats will be here then, but as for anyone else (besides Chelios, of course lol ) who knows? Z, Draper, Maltby, Homer...they could all be gone.

People were doing the same thing with Steve three years before he retired. Give Nick a chance to be the captain before you start handing his C to someone else. Sheesh.

You can see Z in another uni because you prefer Pavel. Z has said he would like to play his entre career in Detroit. The fact that he is NOT ALLOWED to have a contract extension right now and Pavel does is a direct result of the fact that Pavel demanded a contract that allowed him UFA status as soon as possible. In fact, that seems to suggest Pavel was more interested than Z in LEAVING Detroit. Just so you know.

A. I prefer wins to losses, not players over players. I have the Dats avatar because I think it is a funny pic. When Z has a funny pic I may use it.

B. I think that Pavel wanted to stay in Detroit when he was on the verge of free agency, because he said he wanted to. When it comes time for Hank to be offered deals from other teams, I'll make my final judgment on his want to stay here. I remember a recent interview with a FSN reporter where he was asked about his hope that he could play his career in Detroit and he responded something like, "You never know what will happen. I will take it as it comes." To me, that is not as comforting as, "I want to play my entire career in Detroit. They have the best fans and organization and I have fun here." as Pavel said.

C. When it comes down to it, Pavel is here for 7 years. Hank for the rest of this season. And if Z is locked up long-term, he WILL be captain.

To be honest, I think it has a lot to do with how far Z gets past his back problems. If he's unable to put together a 75 game season on a regular basis then he might not be the best choice for captain if only because he's not always present.

What about Yzerman? Look at all the injuries he had and the games he missed.

Actually, Zetterberg is locked for next season as well. That's why he is not allowed to negotiate for a new contract yet. Not until the end of the season.
