Third Man In 2,091 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 Good win tonight. I wasn't impressed with the line combos, because the chemistry seemed to be lacking. Hopefully, they'll get that fixed. I'd switch Homer and Hudler around on the lines. I agree about the line combos. Except that Dano was playing so well with Dats and Flip, it seems a shame to split them up. puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 I don't even remember the last time the supposed 'nay-sayers' ever discredited Dom of a shutout, or his good performance. But it's no surprise your so quick to jump in and post that. Is it really that hard for you to just accept a win from the Wings (regardless of who's in net) and not take little shots here and there towards whom ever it may be? I just don't get it. He played good, we know that. There are people on here that are not Dom fans, but in the end for the most part they give him credit like they should. Stop making it out to be more than it really is. Obviously, you haven't read any of the goalie threads in this forum, HC. Smart girl!!
Third Man In 2,091 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 Interesting that the only goal was while the ZDH was reunited on the PP. True. I'd love to keep them together on the first PP unit. But they need to be split up at this point to give the team more balanced scoring, especially against good defensive clubs.
Heaton 1 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 A great display of team togetherness/toughness after McCormick cross checked Lidstrom for no reason and Chelios/Kopecky were ready to kill him but the refs broke it up too quickly. That's the 2nd time that's happened in the past few games and the boys aren't letting it go.
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 Over his last 11 starts, he's 9-1-1 with a 1.34 goals against (!!!!!!) and a .936 save percentage and 3 shutouts. Yikes. Extremely impressive comeback for Dom. No question there. I hope he keeps it up for the rest of the season and into the playoffs! GO DOM! GO WINGS!
tweekvp 0 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 Red Wings have not let in more than one goal per game in the last four games! 1 - 0 against Colorado tonight, 3 - 1 against the Blackhawks, 3 - 0 against Dallas, and 4 - 1 against Dallas too. Both shutouts by Hasek. That is amazing. So far in 2008 the wings have outscored their opponents 11-2! How long is this team going to be able to keep this up? dallas27 7 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 I like the part when the announcer said he didn't want to jinx the shutout...yet he, or his partner, said shutout like at the 3 minute mark prior. Tighter game than what I thought it was going to be. Nice to see them pull it out.
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 You still really annoy me a lot of the time. I don't think anyone has a more subjective perception of reality around here than you. That was an extremely necessary comment that has added a much-needed element to the conversation. Or not. Swooping into the thread to pick on one particular poster is not going to happen. Especially if you've been warned in the past to knock it off with the GDT sniping.

Why don't you snoop into our PM's to get a better understanding of my distaste with the matter. If you're a rational human being, I don't think you'd disagree with my perspective. And I'm very sorry that in the past I hijacked a typical incredibly eloquent and expansively brilliant GDT during a rather boring game in order to engage in civil and intelligent discussion on a discussion board. I shouldn't have gotten in the way of 30 posts in a row of "WHAT A CHECK!!!" with any other civil discussion. How stupid of me.
clutchngrab 12 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 I don't know if anyone else noticed, but the Draper Maltby line was pretty brutal. Basically, I thought this game was crap. Basic execution didn't happen - like getting the puck deep.
Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 Don't have a lot of time so I'll post more later, but Kronwall has officially arrived. IMO he was the best player on the ice. Great performance by him.
auxlepli 17 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 It was great to see Holmstrom out there again, and once again the Wings out shoot their opponent. I thought the Versus coverage was fine. It sounded and looked really good. I can't speak for or against the announcers though.

SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 All I'm gonna say is the Wings put on a clinic defensively those last 3 or 4 minutes after getting a bit sloppy before. And my man-love-o-meter for both Hasek and Osgood right now is off the charts. I want to give them both awkward bear hugs right now for playing so well...or probably something a little less expressive.
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 that game was zzzz Hardly. While shots were down, I still found the pace high and whenever there were chances on both ends, the chances were good and the goaltending on both sides was spectacular. Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 that game was zzzz I’m going to have to agree. I’m not getting much luck when it comes to watching Wings games live. That’s 2 games I’ve seen now and we’ve scored a total of 1 goal. I thought the line combinations were a little off. Not sure why Babs would split up Flip-Dats-Cleary as they were clearly working well together. Anyway the top line played pretty well and Holmstrom received a great pass from Flip but he was obviously a little rusty as he failed to finish the play. I thought Flip hustled real well last night and he did well in keeping the puck in the zone. Dats was at his best again and he made some terrific defensive moves. As for the goal, it was a terrific bit of teamwork. Dats did a great job of passing it over to Kronwall who then unsleashed a heavy shot, Holmstrom was at the crease giving Theodore grief and then slid a beautiful pass (assuming it was intentional) over to Dats who buried it. Superb goal and it was enough to give Detroit the victory. As for individual performances, I thought Kronwall played an exceptional game. He made some solid defensive moves and he constantly threatening on the offensive end. He even joined the rush a few times and I’m glad he got an assist. Lilja made some nice plays and laid one or two good hits, but he had a costly turnover deep in his own end. Luckily they didn’t make him pay. Rafalski was the same old, some great moves on both ends but then some careless giveaways and poor decision making. Lidstrom was really good, as usual and Chelios and Lebda both had solid games. Zetterberg looked great when bringing the puck up ice, Franzen was non existant, Samuelsson I felt played a pretty good game and Hudler made some eye catching moves but just lacked a finishing touch. Glad to get the win, great for Hasek to get a much deserved shut out, but a fairly dull game IMO.
lfd250 1 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 I don't know what has been posted (didn't want to read the 8 pages) But was it me or were the Avs putting on a hitting show because they knew Downie wasn't playing? Also thought it was VERY cheap that they would go after Malts his first game back. I don't know how may double hits I saw on him. Looked like they were hitting his back. As for the post I did read (this page) People were doing a lot of judging on a game were we replaced two people from INJ and thought the team would be the same. It takes time for the lines to come together and it takes time for people to get back into game shape. JMO

And why would it be "cheap" to go after a player who's back from injury? If you're back, you're back and ready to play a game of hockey, not you're back and ready to skate around a bit but shouldn't really take chances and try to shy away from contact. There's no code that says you don't hit a guy coming back from injury. If this were the playoffs they'd have gone after him twice as much. I agree thought, it looked a little bit choppy with new players out there. But the Avs were playing excellent defense. Always in the right place at the right time. It looked a little bit like Minnesota Wild hockey.

haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 that game was zzzz Yeah. I know I'll probably get flack for saying this, so let me add some disclaimers first. I'm extremely happy the Wings are totally dominating the way they have been this season. I'm extremely happy with the performance of most of the players on the team. And I would love for them to win the Cup playing this style. That being said, I used to rip on the Wild and the Devils for playing dull, trapping hockey and if I'm being honest with myself as a hockey fan, this puck possession style that the Wings are so incredibly effective at makes for a lot of boring games. There's the few spectacular seconds of a Datsyuk or Zetterberg goal, or a Downey fight, or some other momentarily thrilling play, but in between it's a lot of dull conservative hockey. sorry, just had to air that dirty secret that's been in the back of my mind during several of their games. I absolutely agree with this. I've been really bored with the games lately. I'll watch every second of it, but im just like come on..where's the excitement?! haha I think for some reason it also gets boring because they win SO much. I know thats may sound dumb to say, but before the puck drops you pretty much expect the Wings to win, and they do. Of course I want them to win every game, but at the same time, when they lose a few here and there and have to face some adversity, it makes for more exciting hockey. Don't know if i'm making sense here..
Opie 308 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 I think that the style of Defensive play by the other team impacts this as well. If the defense was overly aggressive and chasing the wings players every where you would see crisp passing and quicker passing. With the D (almost all D's in the league against any team) setting up to cover the slot and giving up the perimeter the wings are forced to pass the puck around the perimeter looking for a guy that slashes through the slot for the pass. I think this is why Babs is asking his players to crash the net and shoot more. Flip and Cleary have specifically said that has helped them dramatically this season. Just my two cents, but I could be wrong.
