Foote Story Leaks Out

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Adam Foote's good name is taking a pounding following his trade-deadline move from Columbus to his old stomping grounds in Colorado. Foote never wanted to leave Denver in the first place, but he was victim to the team's cost-cutting after the lockout. Foote signed in Columbus as a free agent before the start of the 2005-06 season. Word out of Columbus, courtesy of The Columbus Dispatch beat writer Aaron Portzline, is Foote jacked up his salary demands when discussing a contract extension with rookie GM Scott Howson, asking for $8 million over two years. Then, when the Blue Jackets kept pace with their offer (in the neighborhood of $7 million for two years) and asked to continue talks after the deadline, Foote reportedly told the team he had no interest in staying and wanted out. Portzline reports Foote had a private jet waiting to ferry him to Calgary to join the Avs for a game Tuesday night. Couldn't wait to get out of town, eh, Adam? If true, expect the hockey gods to have their revenge on Mr. Foote before this is done. When Foote becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer, there isn't an NHL team anywhere that will approach the kind of money his camp was allegedly asking for last week.

These things always smell kinda funny don't they... No one else will likely touch the guy and it seems probable he'll take a discount for them so Avalanche it is. Will probably be the same for flopparoo if he regains any kind of form.

i dont really blame him. if i was in his position i would do that exact same thing. why wouldnt u want to leave that s***hole that is the blue jackets for ur old team where u didnt want to leave in the first place, and which is reuniting the old gang with forsberg returning. as much as i dont like him, i dont blame him one bit for what he did. if only other players had more loyalty.

i agree. and it was nice that he told them before the deadline that he had no intention of staying so the jackets could still get something for him.

I don't blame him. He never wanted to leave in the first place. His heart is in Denver. I'm sure it wasn't so much because he was playing in Columbus, but that he WASN'T playing in Denver.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if he got that money next year. Defensemen are often overpaid in the new cap system. However, Foote brings a game not shown on the scoreboard or fantasy pools, and he is valuable. A buying team looking for D will most likely make a move for him.

If Foote or Forsberg were as loyal as you claim, neither would have left town to begin with. They would have taken what the Avs could afford to pay them.

Wasn't Foote bought out at the end of the lockout, meaning he couldn't resign with Colorado for at least one year? It was the same exact situation as with McCarty. The team didn't want them to go, the player didn't want to leave, but the salary cap lead to some tough choices.

I wouldn't attack Foote's loyalty, myself. His eroding skill set though...

If this is true the Blue Jackets should publicly thank the guy.

1. The trade prevented them from overpaying for a guy who has little value to a fringe playoff team

2. They got a 1st round pick out of the deal

Foote turned down a 4 year, $12m offer from the Avs for a 3 year, $13.8m offer from the Blue Jackets.

Hell you have to try and get every penny you can well you can. I don't think that he is work that much but you still have to give it a shot.

I also don't blame him for wanting out of Columbus. I don't see them making a good run at much of anythign in the near future. I would want out of their as well and would want out quick.

Essentially the Avs could keep Foote or Blake. And thus they choose Blake, and offered Foote the above deal, which actually wasn't all that bad. In retrospect that was pretty stupid because Foote was a franchise player and Blake was destined to leave for LA anyways when his contract ran out the following year. So yeah, he's a "sub-elite" defenseman who took 1.8 mill more from the Jackets. Thought it was actually a good deal for him to be captain, leader, and all. Feel for the Jackets - they needed to keep this guy for the sake of their franchise.

As for Forsberg, the Avs offered him something ludicrous like 1 mill per year - slap in the face - knowing he would leave. But, they had to keep Sakic, such is the cap era....

Footer's not a bad guy, but I thought maybe he'd stick it out in Columbus and give them a chance....

total crock. he left just for the money in the first place. if he takes a discount this summer to stay in Colorado, good for him... otherwise I won't give him the benefit of doubt.

Yes...my only point was that he was not bought out; he left of his own accord.

Who would wanna stay in Columbus anyway?

Apparently Adam Foote did if they paid him $4 mill per season. To me that's the strangest part of this story. Foote actually was willing to stay!

I really have a hard time believing this story.

I've always had the impression that Foote is the ultimate hockey player. He'll go through walls for his team and teammates and does it with his mouth shut.

I have a feeling that if anything was said it would be taken out of context.

I just don't see him saying he'll be a bad captain and teammate. That's not in his DNA.

EDIT: Just wanted to add that if the cap space was there, I'd add Foote to this club in a heartbeat. He is the closest thing to 'old time hockey' still left in the game and I don't believe there are too many players in the NHL that are more fierce or loyal to their hockey teams. He reminds me so much of Harold Snepts, only with better offensive skills. This guy screams 'winner'.

When I think of Adam Foote, I think of the time he high-sticked Yzerman in the face after a faceoff with less than 2 seconds left in the 3rd period of a tie game.

Yes true. But some people on here will take it that he did it on purpose. I was appalled that Stevie lost some more teeth, but it was an accident and Adam apologized profusely for that...

ps. he did get a penalty for that and we won the game....
