Jiri Fischer, should he get his name on cup?

My point is this, I understand the injury occured in 2005, but if his was under contract thru 2008 then, in my opinion, I think he should get his name on the cup as a player. Simply because he would have been apart of this team this season. If Jiri was still playing we would not have needed to pickup Stuart at the deadline. The fact that he got his name on the cup in 2002 is not relevant to my question.

Now if Jiri's contract would have needed to be extended for him to be apart of the current roster then I don't think he should get his name on the cup.

You're assuming that Jiri would still be on the team, which IMO is a mistake. We have no clue what would've happened had Fischer not gone down, and he could've just as easily been traded, or blown out an ACL the first game of the regular season this year. To say that he would've been on the team this season is purely speculative in professional sports, regardless of how likely it probably would've been.

I think he will.

As a member of the front office, he's eligible to get his name on the Cup, the second time it would be there. Fischer won the trophy as a player in 2002.

He was a free agent this year. No one signed him. So as far as a player is concerned, no.

everyone other than Helm would have to be petitioned on the cup...Helm will be on it as he played in the finals

No. If they won it the season he had his health problems, they'd I'd say yes.

oh they'res no doubt about that..

but he'll be on the cup this year. He's a member of the Wings front office staff, so is eligible.

I say yes, or at the very least get a Stanley Cup ring from the wings, because I feel he would have been apart of this team had the injury not occured!

He will definately get a ring. My husband and I went to JLA after the parade to buy some merchandise from the little shop by the ticket office that was open. Because it is so small, they had a security guy at the door only letting 2 people in to the store at a time. My husband noticed he had a Stanley Cup ring!

We started talking to him and he said there are 5 "tiers" of rings that are given out - with the most elite and flashy going to the players, management, ect. The higher you are within the organization, the better ring you will get. (We got home, got online and started browsing the available positions! LOL)

He told us that this will be his 5th cup ring - his first was from the 54-55 season! Amazing! (He also has a Tigers ring and a Lions one from the 50's when he was a waterboy!) And they are all being handed down to his grandchildren (I of course asked if he wanted to adopt one more!).

Anyways, it was a neat little story to end our very fun day at the parade!

I am shocked more people don't agree with me.

Why are you shocked.... you don't see anyone trying to give Vladdy his name on the cup this year... same difference really (both didn't skate a mm this season)

I'm 99% sure that the Red Wings petitioned (successfully) to get Konstantinov's name on the Cup for the 97-98 season.

That said, there's really no reason to do the same for Fischer at this point.

IIRC, the winning team gets something like 50 name spaces on the Cup, and once you get past the automatic player names, it's up to the club to determine the allocation of the rest of the spaces, pending a cursory NHL approval. (The NHL XXXed out Basil Pocklington's name from the ring because he had no affiliation with the Oilers other than being the father of the team owner, unlike the various Illiches, who at least can claim to be involved in Olympia Entertainment in some way)

So it's up to the Wings organization if Jiri's name goes on there as part of club management.

his injury is similar to a footballer (soccer player) in africa few years ago, and a coach here in England (who is only 32 mind you)... the coach was diagnosed early and was fine but unfortunately the african player died whilst playing in an african competition for his nation. It was actually really shocking and what made it worse was that doctors said there was absolutely no reason why he died, his heart just stopped.

As you can see my user name I am a huge Fischer fan. His contract was up last year, and they did not resign him as a player but instead placed him in management as Head of Player Development. As was mentioned before:

Fischer didn't touch the Cup before it left Mellon Arena but said he would when the time comes. As a member of the front office, he's eligible to get his name on the Cup, the second time it would be there. Fischer won the trophy as a player in 2002.

I think if there is room on the cup others would not hesitate to include his name on there. Based on his comment he doesn't expect it though:

"I'm more realistic about that I live in my role, live my life now. I would like to play one day again and be a part of it as a player, but today I didn't earn it as a player."

And I truely believe that if his heart did not stop while on the bench that he would still be a Red Wing today. He was having an amazing year before the incident. He was really developing into a top 4 d-man.

He's not giving up hope of every playing again, but he's not willing to risk his life either.

As another Fisch fan (as you can tell from my av) I think his own words, as quoted in the post above, say it all.

He himself says he did not earn it as a player, but he is eligible as a part of management. I think he should get his name on it, but not as a player. To do so would be to cheat the players who contributed this season.

Does that mean you feel the same way when the Wings petitioned to have Vladdy's name on the cup????
