Phazon 24 Report post Posted August 31, 2008 Yes, osgood was lights out last season and a good playoff run. But what about now? Do you think osgood will play as good as last season?

Jericho613 74 Report post Posted August 31, 2008 Yes especially with the defense we have and the offense we have, its pretty much the same great team with an upgrade with Hossa.
theman19 47 Report post Posted August 31, 2008 like he did in 96 when he was robbed of a veznia? When he had it in 98 when he won the cup? When he had it last year and recorded the first two shutouts to start a finals since the 20's? Yeah, he's good Thread over.

BTW, thanks for informing/reminding/unblocking-it-from-suppressed-memory me, that was pretty ridiculous. Looked it up just now, Ozzy had Carey beat in Wins, GAA, Save%. Just another footnote in the underrated career of Chris Osgood, *sigh* Edited August 31, 2008 by b.shanafan14
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted August 31, 2008 He's been good ever since he revisecd his game, which leads me to believe this isn't a fluke. He'll be huge for us next year, too. He's a totally different, more reliable goaltender and has proved it. It's up to the offense to score goals now.

soultrain 43 Report post Posted September 1, 2008 he will be just as solid as we need him to be.
b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted September 1, 2008 Ozzy is the best man for the job. He is solid without needing a boat load of shots to stay focused. The Red Wings rarely need a goaltender to steal a game, but Osgood played lights out the whole post-season. The Red Wings don't need a goaltender to win it for them, they need a goaltender who makes the saves he is supposed to and doesn't screw it up, which is actually a lot easier said then done. Two years ago when Manny Legace was in goal losing it for us, I was lamenting an injuried Osgood. Season after that, we got to the Western Conference final and then Dom spent most the last couple games on his back. This playoffs we were on route for the same fate before Ozzy stepped in and played as good as any goaltender in the league could in his situation, if not better. Ozzy will need to be rested to produce likewise in the playoffs, so expect him to see around 50 games, or less rather than more.

Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted September 1, 2008 He doesn't need to be stand-on-your-head good like many of the other goalies in the league. As long as he keeps his cool he should be fine. Our defense will be able to filter out most of the quality scoring chances other teams may generate. Osgood just needs to be there.

eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted September 1, 2008 like he did in 96 when he was robbed of a veznia? When he had it in 98 when he won the cup? When he had it last year and recorded the first two shutouts to start a finals since the 20's? Correction; fourth time ever. Toronto's Frank McCool did it in 1945, and New Jersey's Martin Brodeur did it in 2003. It's still an amazing feat, and the fact that people are doubting Osgood is ridiculous. I could understand people doubting Osgood in 1997; But Osgood has been at his best technically for the last few years, is mentally one of the toughest goalies in the league, and has proven that he is capable of staying sharp without seeing a high level of shots, or if he goes long stretches inactive, but can play well if he does face a lot of shots and sees flurries as well. Osgood is one of the five best goalies in the league when you take into account overall skill, mental toughness, and clutch performance. The fact that he is a perfect fit for the Wings' style of play and he makes less than $2m are just bonuses.
Guest mindfly Report post Posted September 1, 2008 (edited) Thing is we don't need a Luongo/Brodeur because our defense and offence... two-three selky candidates... are just too damn good... osgood sometimes only face 20shots, if he saves them all or let 1-2 pucks in detroit most likely scored more than 2 goals and there is a win right there Osgood does the job but he isnt by any mean spectacular like some goalies.. And that's a good thing, better to spending most of the money on defense rather than 2goalies for 13M$ (Chicago hah) Edited September 1, 2008 by mindfly
LIDDYGIBBY5 1 Report post Posted September 1, 2008 Goalies don't tend to just drop off suddenly when it comes to mechanics. Osgood is mentally strong. If a goalie goes from great to terrible in one off-season it is because they lose their edge and I don't see Ozzy doing that unless he gets injured and his mechanics fall to pieces. He's was good before, but since revising his game he's been great. Nothing leads to believe that won't be the case this season. Lastly, to the OP....Osgood wasn't just solid last year. The year before that he was just as consistent, but Dom was his regular self and deserved the nod in the playoffs.
