Mors 201 Report post Posted May 11, 2009 Holland will if he can, he's not going to let someone as skilled as Hossa walk after he came in and fit perfectly in the system. I could definitely see him letting go of several people to secure the core elements of two incredible lines.
WingZNut13 99 Report post Posted May 11, 2009 Hossa is a great addition to the team! Not attempting to sign Hossa again would be a huge mistake. He has two huge goals the other night in Game 4 and played a huge role in Game 5. Hossa makes this team that much more leathal! Not signing Hossa would be a bigger mistake than letting Rossie O'Donnell get free in an all you can eat buffet. Hossa is key element to the Red Wings and why they will repeat this year! zata20 4 Report post Posted May 11, 2009 And to think, with all the options and free agents, this is a roster that's a rather "worst case" scenario: Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom Hudler-Filppula-Franzen Leino-Helm-Cleary Abdelkader-Draper-Maltby Lidstrom-Rafalski Kronwall-Stuart Ericsson-Lilja Meech That's a pretty damn good lineup! wingsdiehard13 33 Report post Posted May 11, 2009 He could have had the big payday in Pittsburgh, and a shot at the Cup. He took less money to come here. He could have had giant money in Edmonton (I think $10M was on the table), and took a $3M pay cut for Detroit. They'll find a way. Oh, by the way... wingsdiehard13? Hossa's 30, not 35. I advise you go back and read the whole post Casey. Including the quote. That was in response to a statement about Lidstrom. Lidstrom is 38.
titanium2 867 Report post Posted May 11, 2009 I've said this all along. Unless Hossa takes an extremely generous cap hit that is around the average of Datsyuk's, Zetterberg's and Franzen's, then he won't be a Wing next year. I think it was Bruce Macleod who wrote an article about how during Z's press conference you could see Hossa and Kopecky just casually walking by on their way to the exits; symbolic of how those two will in all likelihood leave for new teams while Z remains a Wing. LeftWinger 5,153 Report post Posted May 11, 2009 There's no cap room, Hossa's gone after this year. plenty of cap room, Sammy and Hudler are gone. Along with another player to be named later... ...Hossa will stay for a fair contract. Rich Winter already said cap not an issue. Hossa aint going anywhere. Maybe they can convince Maltby and or Draper to retire.

LeftWinger 5,153 Report post Posted May 11, 2009 That's a pretty damn good lineup! Good lineup? With Hudler on the 2nd line!??!?! Hudler has no business even being mentioned on the 2nd line! Unless (hopefully) he signs elsewhere. Leino, Helm, Abdelkader, anyone of which can take that rostor spot. Even if we don't re-sogn Hossa, I pray that Hudler is in a new uniform next season. Unless he takes $1.5 million in salary, he is a waste of money.

Rich Winter already said cap not an issue. Hossa aint going anywhere. Maybe they can convince Maltby and or Draper to retire. Sammy + Hudler + Chelios = 4 mil + Flip = Hossa (with some wiggle room) Ericsson, Helm, Leino, Abdelkader step in ZDH Hossa Helm Mule Cleary Draper Leino Malts Abdelkader Kopecky Lids & Ralf/Ericsson Ralf/Kronwall & Stuart Kronwall/Ericsson & Lilja/Kindl/Meech/Lebda whomever makes the most $en$e! Obviously I have no clue on this working $-wise because we are missing figures for some players. Sign Downey in case, hell even look for a vet with no cup to fill out the roster if they need to. But with those top 3 lines they will be in very very good shape, hell those top 2 put them in great shape! Don't forget the trade of Lilja (I would miss his PK and Block shots) could free up another 1.25 mil and with Ericsson coming along that would not be a bad move between he and Lebda (keep Meech) that is 2 mil off the books next season. While there are avenues that could make this work it would be both Ballsy on Hollands part and very very surprising to see Hossa leave that kind of loot behind. Either way I would blame neither if Hossa wore another jersey, and it would not surprise me one bit if Holland found a way to make this work!
clutchngrab 12 Report post Posted May 11, 2009 (edited) The other point which no one is mentioning is that in 2 or 3 years time guys like Big Rig, Leino and maybe even Helm will be in the value range of Cleary, Flip, etc. If all goes well I doubt we will be comfortable letting those guys walk. They are the next generation. I've always felt that winning teams are a good mix of established stars and up and comers. As much as I like Hossa, I'm converned that signing him long term might be short-sighted given the Hank/Dats/Mule contracts. On the other hand Holland may be looking to create a 3-5 year dynasty and retire. Edited May 11, 2009 by clutchngrab

So that last part may be true and then Stevie Y or Jim Nill or some one else will have to deal with it. But with the strong loyalty tones running through this org I find it very hard to believe that Holland would leave the Wings in any kind of predicament on purpose. Not saying you insinuated that btw just saying!
WingsCaptain 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2009 For the posters who scoff at the benefit of Hossa during the regular season, then imagine the Wings without Hossa and his 40 goals (10 GWG) and where the Wings might have ended up, points-wise. Still in the playoffs, probably -- but if they were the #8 seed and faced San Jose in the first round, things could have been much different. Hmmm ... Columbus or San Jose, Columbus or San Jose ... um, yeah, I'll take Columbus, thankyouverymuch. You can bet that Anaheim & San Jose beating the crap out of each other resulted in nothing but benefit for the Wings in the 2nd round. FWIW, Hossa was third in +/- (+27), 1st in goals, 7th in assists, and 3rd in points in the regular season. This is a no-brainer. Ken Holland signs him if he can, and I think he will be able to. We might lose Samuelsson and/or Hudler, but you have to try to keep all four of the guys who scored 30+ goals this season, particularly a great two-way player like Hoss. These are the same sort of things we praise Z and Pavs for. Maybe Kenny will sign him to a really long-term deal: 6M a year for 7 years, then $500k for the next 20 years after that. Then the cap hit is really low.

Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted May 11, 2009 We have to lose a hell of a lot more than Hudler and Sam to account for what Hossa would potentially sign for. I just mentioned those two because the person I was responding to did. Hossa could conceivably be brought back without destroying this team and forcing us to lose the war on terror. Holland knows it, Hossa knows it, which is why they'll talk this summer. The doom & gloom surrounding all discussions pertaining to this guy has, I think, gotten ridiculous. I understand the cap concerns. They're valid concerns. But I'm not going to write him off until I hear his agent say it's a no-go. People thought bringing him here in the first place was a total pipe dream.

autoX 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2009 I have read that Hossa would like to stay a wing, but lets see what his tune is after the playoffs. If he has his Cup he might be looking for $$ before he retires. To keep him he would need to drop below 5M, on another team he would be pulling down 7-9M. That is a big chunk of change to pass on. I would love to watch the Wings the next couple years with two number one lines. The only way it is going to happen is if the players put the team first and the dollars second. Taking the hometown discount from Hossa and some of the guys giving up a few $ to keep him. Do you have any idea how much more hated the Wings will be with ZDH and "The Mule, Hoss and whoever is left.
