What about when Steve Yzerman makes this decision?

Most people believe that Mike Babcock is the frontrunner to be the coach of Team Canada 2010.........SO, do Yzerman/ Babcock name Sidney Crosby captain of the squad?

I think Joe Sakic is the obvious choice but assuming Joe is not around. I think Crosby deserves consideration.

Bitterness aside!

I don't think it will be Crosby just yet because once they give it to him it will probably stay for him for the next 15 years, no rush. I think it will be Niedermayer, Pronger, or maybe Iginla.

Crosby will be lucky to get an "A". "Bitterness aside" the reason Crosby wears the C is because the Pens are devoid of veteran leadership that ranks with the likes of Iginla, Sakic, or even Pronger, and because its part of a marketing scheme. Team Canada doesn't need Crosby's face to draw their team any attention.

Canada has traditionally gone for more established veterans. Should Sakic retire (and rumours are making this almost a dpone deal) Iginla gets the nod regardless of how well Crosby starts the season. The only other people being considered are Pronger and Niedermayer.

Yup, you have to give it to Iginla. That guy is a true leader, and has earned it. Crosby is just a trendy marketing ploy, and has not proven that he is mature enough. You earn things like that over the course of at least 5 seasons, not because Buttman licks your balls like your the messiah.

I agree with everyone else on here, if Sakic does not play for Team Canada, then Jarome Iginla will be the captain. You could make a case for Pronger or Niedermayer, but I see it being Iginla. Crosby might get an "A" this go-round, definitely in 2010, and likely the "C" in 2014. There are too many veteran proven leaders ahead of him in the Canada program, but he will one day be the unquestioned leader of Team Canada.

I like Iginla too but the knock on him would be he has never won the big prize on the level, others mentioned in this thread all have, something to consider, but with all those captains and leaders it really shouldnt matter who wears it heck even Luongo has captaincy experience.

Giving the C to Crosby would be a monumental slap in the face to the veterans on that squad.

I can't see anybody but Sakic or Iginla right now. Possibly Niedermayer if theyre both out for some odd reason

I am more interested in who is going to make the team, I don't give a s*** who the captain is, it's not like the veteran guys are going to stop leading just because their isn't a C on their shoulder.

What are you talking about, he is not a leader, look at his examples on the ice (slashing zetts knee) he can't play defense on power killing. Too young to actually be a leader.

Picking Crosby would be an erroneous choice. He's a good kid, and a great player, but a bad Captain. He's just not mature enough to bring to the table what a Captain needs to, and that's with his NHL club, much less team Canada. It's no secret the only reason he is one is a result of the marketing brain trusts inside the NHL and Pens front offices, and you can't really blame them, it's made them big bucks.

Sure he's got his Cup now, but that doesn't validate his position as a Captain. His conduct simply isn't indicative of the behavior required of a responsible Captain. Nothing against the kid, he's a hell of a talent, but the shoe just doesn't fit him, I'd say Iginla or Sakic / Neidermayer if they end up playing. Give Crosby a few more years and I'm sure he'll come around but as it stands he just doesn't fulfill the demands of the job.
