Holland "Not Optimistic" about re-signing Hossa

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

This is an awesome post.

When Hossa spurned more than 8 million a season to sign with Detroit at a discount, everyone cheered. After all, it was only about 5-10% discount of a years salary to sign with Detroit Well worth the chance to win the cup. Now, wings fans are expecting him to take more of a discount to play for the Wings to the tune of about 40-50% discount.

If someone offered me a job where I could make $80,000 a year but the work environment was not that friendly, or I could take a job at $75,000 a year for a much more laid back work environment, which one do you think I would take? Thats right, the 75k a year job. Now, if I took that job and then the company fell on hard times and wanted to keep me around for 40k a year, is it unreasonable for me to look elsewhere? Even though the other employees call me a sell out because I am looking elsewhere?

Great post

I am by no means a big-time fan of Hossa, but I felt he played very well throughout the reg season...It's that damn disappearing act those last 7 games that gets me :ranting:

That said for the "right price" I wouldn't mind seeing him stick around, but me thinks his asking price will see him end-up elsewhere.

I never said he didn't play well throughout the regular season, or in the playoffs for that matter. I said he never fit in with this team. And he didnt. Outside of back-checking and playing a strong two-way game, his work in the neutral and offensive zones were anything but the Red Wings style.

When you are making millions and millions of dollars, how much of a difference is 2 mil? Comparing a 75,000/40,000 salary is not the same as 8 million/4 million. I just don't understand. Sure he can get more somewhere else but what difference is that money when you are a freaking millionaire as it is? So you can buy 14 houses instead of 8 and 10 ferraris instead of 5?

He says he wants to win a cup so bad, well have fun doing that in LA Mr. Hossa.

I love Hossa, I wish he could stay. I just don't get the money athletes get paid/demand.

Alright, dammit, I am starting to get agitated now!

Right now for those who want Hossa back no news is fairly good news. Jim Matheson, the guy who apparently has the best read on Ritch Winter said that the Wings would've traded his rights by today and as of this minute nothing has happened. You could interpret that in many ways though.

I know to all of us who make average or less, 8 to 4 million doesn't seem like a big deal, but it IS. It's cutting his quality of life in HALF. Do you guys get that? Whatever payments he owes, debt he's incurred, other costs, he has to continue to pay at the same levels as he has been with half the income. It makes sense that he doesn't want to cut his quality of life in half just to play for a good team.

Excuse me but the difference between 75k and 40k is only 35k... the difference between 4 million and 8 million is 4 million!

I know no one neeeeeeds a yacht but if Marian has one taking 4 million might mean he has to sell it. I know if I had a yacht I wouldn't want to get rid of it.

Gotta keep that supermodel girlfriend happy! I was thinking about the expenses they have. The agent takes a slice, taxes must be a beeatch, the home is expensive, a couple of Italian sports cars, and your left with a buck forty to last you all year...hehe.

All true. Marian knows what he is doing.

I just hope we sign this man... somehow.

Not to kill the mood or anything, but it would be entirely possible that if we cant sign Hossa, he signs somewhere for a couple years, our cap hit goes down and he comes back here to finish his career. I could somehow see that happening if he really did like it that much here.

I guess in a state where people are struggling and the difference between 75/40k is not ONLY 35k. It has THRITY FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS. To a middle class working person that is a hell of a lot more of a difference than to a freaking millionaire. I guess I just don't have much sympathy that he may not be able to buy as many yachts and ferraris when I can't even dream of buying a 14' fishing boat at this point. Cry me a river that he would have to take cuts. And this isn't only Hossa, I can't believe how much ANY athlete gets paid these days.

Sorry for ranting but I just got my salary cut and profit sharing taken away today and upper management and the CEO of the company ( i wont name who I work for but is a major company ) had the nerve to say to us, right after telling us all of the cuts "it may get to the point when us managers have to see a decline in our pay, so believe us when we say we feel for you" and this guy drives a Bentley and literally lives in a Frank Lloyd Wright home. Oh no! How tragic, I hope you don't EVER have to take a paycut mr. manager! Please, cut my pay and my coworkers pay so you can still rake in millions of dollars every year. These people should be the first taking paycuts.

And I am NOT bashing Hossa as a player. I would love to see him stay. I hope he does stay. I do not beleive he is a choker, I have not lost faith in him as a Red Wing. I do not want him to walk. Just to get that out there.

Yah I've re-gained a little optimism because I thought if he wasn't gonna sign, they would of let him go already as well. Who knows? they could have a deal in place or atleast an agreement and they are just working down to the wire to get the final numbers figured out. I really hope we can keep him.

So, he scored 40 goals, averaged just under a point per game, back-checked well and played a "strong two-way game" all while "not fitting in?"

Well, if he doesn't re-sign, I certainly hope they can find someone else to not fit in.

I usually agree with you younguns, but not this time. Ray Whitney DIDN'T fit in. Hossa fit in very well.

I'm sorry to hear the troubles. I am a student and I haven't been able to find a sumer job so I am looking at some huge debts incurred this next year.

I never get upset at athletes regarding big dollars. I figure its better they get the money than the admins.

 Dude, then what is Hudler/Holmstrom/Sammy/Maltby/Draper? Dude, you need help....

Hudler/Holmstrom/Sammy/Maltby/Draper aren't trying to squeeze a $6 million per year contract from Detroit coming off of a paltry post-season.

 Dude, then what is Hudler/Holmstrom/Sammy/Maltby/Draper? Dude, you need help....

What are they?

They would fall under several categories. The first three that come to mind are:

players that weren't paid 7.4 million,

players that didn't get truckloads of prime icetime and

players that didn't lead us in goal scoring in the regular season.

Edit: One more, thanks to Nero.

Players that aren't going to cause the Wings huge cap problems this upcoming year with a big new contract.
