Wings sign Patrick Eaves to 1-year/$500k deal

$500,000 is an absolute STEAL!!! This kid has great potential and worse case scenario, he'll score 16 goals. Even if he gets injured and flops, 500,000 won't break the bank.

Here's to another Cleary story!!!

Although Eaves' numbers have been below expectations, I feel he could've signed for more than 500k somewhere else (buys into the team philosophy). He plays both ends of the ice well, and has an all-star work ethic cast around him, including Dan Cleary, who walked his exact path years ago.

Its like he was meant to play here. Hopefully he takes full advantage of the opportunity.

AUTO-GENERATED CAPGEEK.COM LINES

FORWARDS

Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Johan Franzen ($3.955m)

Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Daniel Cleary ($2.800m) / Tomas Holmstrom ($2.250m)

Kris Draper ($1.583m) / Kirk Maltby ($0.883m) / Ville Leino ($0.800m)

Darren Helm ($0.599m) / * Patrick Eaves ($0.500m)

DEFENSEMEN

Nicklas Lidstrom ($7.450m) / Brian Rafalski ($6.000m)

Brad Stuart ($3.750m) / Niklas Kronwall ($3.000m)

Andreas Lilja ($1.250m) / Jonathan Ericsson ($0.900m)

Brett Lebda ($0.650m) / Derek Meech ($0.483m)

GOALTENDERS

Chris Osgood ($1.417m) / Jimmy Howard ($0.717m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS

ROSTER: 21; PAYROLL: $54.771m; CAP ROOM: $2.029m BONUSES: $0.000m

This leaves us with $2 mil and 8 defenseman. Trading a d-man will give us $2.5 to $3.25 mil in cap space. Kenny can still sign a solid player. This makes me think Eaves will be a 4th liner and we will get a another player for the 2nd/3rd line.

Hudler was frowned upon for being greedy, but Holland is awarded praise for signing a young, previously injured, inconsistent 5'11 190lb forward........ok....sounds like a good deal to me.....

But what do I know, I'm a Happy Hudler fan........

Are you taking your frustration of Hudler going to Russia out on Ken Holland doing his job or are just out to blast the Huddles haters?

'Cuz I think Holland tried his best to keep yr boy. ...and yr boy decided to go to Russia and make some money. Validating his greedy card in LGW land.

Don't get me wrong, I wanted Hudler to stay...

I know it's hard right now, but you need to get over your loss. ;)

Back on topic: For $500,000. Eaves is a great signing. He's not an ego or locker room cancer type guy. So, the price tag risk is worth the potential payoff.

EDIT: For clarity.

Keep in mind if Lilja can't go and is placed on LTIR, his salary does not count against the cap. We could be at $3.25M without trading anyone. . . yet.

I think Eaves is the type of player that could turn his career around with the Wings organization. He has/had what it takes, he just has to bust out... I really hope he does.

This makes me very happy! This guy sounds like exactly what we needed: solid defensively, goal scoring potential, and cheap. Also I am excited we signed a younger player and with the one year deal he will be looking to prove himself and increase his value. Very nice!

I love this signing for two reasons..

1) Eaves is the type of player that could thrive playing for the Red Wings. Definitely could be yet another diamond in the rough signing.

2) I dont have to see Jason Williams in a Red Wings uniform. The thought of that still makes me want to puke.

My forward lines..

ZDH

Franzen-Flip-Leino

Cleary-Helm-Eaves

Abdelkader-Draper-Maltby

Id honestly roll with these lines for now and wait for the deadline so that we will be able to add a higher quality forward (salary cap) if needed.

I might look for a cheap veteran grinder type now or later to eventually replace Maltby for the playoffs (I realize the Wings sitting Maltby is unlikely, however its what Id do). Id also look for a higher quality player to put onto the top two lines so that we can sit Homer for the playoffs. (I know sitting Homer for the playoffs is unlikely, however it is what I would do).
