hate to be the harbinger of bad news, especially since puckloo loves the dominator so much. get well soon dom !!!

Dominik Hasek has all but ruled himself out of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, according to reports.

Hasek, 44, suffered a thigh injury during weekend play in the Czech league and will be out for at least the next three weeks. In a worst-case scenario, Hasek could miss six weeks.

"With this injury, my chance to participate in the 2010 Olympics is quite low," Hasek was quoted as saying in the report on CTVOlympics.ca.

Hasek led the Czech Republic to the gold medal in 1998 in Nagano, Japan in the first Olympic tournament featuring NHL players. Hasek, who played to a 2.20 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage in 735 NHL games, also won a Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings in 2008.

He retired after winning that Cup, but returned to action a year later, signing with his hometown team, HC Pardubice, in hopes of re-honing his game to be part of the Olympic picture.

In 15 games this season, he had posted a 2.54 goals against average and a .918 save percentage.

Earlier this year, the Czech Republic Ice Hockey Federation submitted a list of 60 players being considered for the Olympics. That list featured eight goalies, including Florida's Tomas Vokoun.

wasnt his whole reason with signing with pardubice (might be wrong :)) to play in the olympics?

No. He said it was quite the motivating force, but not the reason he returned to the game. He can still play, and the team was thrilled to have him.

But Dom is smart to say now, it's not looking good. It frees up the coach for the Czech team - Rosey (Vladimír) Ruzicka - to make some decisions early on about goalies. Vokoun will do fine.

Too bad, as it would have been quite the story to see Dom back out there. I am sure he's as disappointed as I am. ;)

It's okay Dom, there's always Sochi 2014.

Seriously though, I would have been nice if Dom made the Czech Olympic squad.

Maybe not as the starter, but to be a member of an Olympic Team on that age, would be great..

He may still be at the Olympics, he didn't rule it out. I hope so, what a story... just to have him on the team would be a huge thing to the Czech athletes.

I suspect Dom is more realistic than most about the fact that he will not be first goalie, in any case. No way even Dom could repeat what he did in Nagano, 10 years later. It will be fun to see if he's there, anyway.

This is going to reveal how much of a douchebag I am but I for one am glad. Those who have met Hasek can tell you the guy is a giant self absorbed ******. During his tenure here, he lived in Northville, and his son Mike was in several classes of mine, and well lets just say Dom was pretty much universially hated by everyone. He even refused to give one of Mike's friends an autograph without paying first....

At least no good forwards will have to worry about him diving for their legs and almost breaking their necks with the game allready decided/some more deserving young goalie gets cheated out of an oppertunity to represent his team.

:ranting:

I was really excited about this winter Olympics cause i wanted to see Hasek play! Sad news... hopefully when he gets healthy they will start him anyways cause Vokoun is BLEH!

Sigh.. get well soon Dom! :(

Vokoun was one of the best goalies in the NHL last year, and he was with the Panthers. Look what happened to Anderson once he was put on a better team.

And I thought we'd agree on something when pigs fly...

Oh, wait- the swine flew.

Too bad about Dom. He's Czech hero. Even if he didn't start, the younglings would have benefited from having him there.

We make fun of his age, but Dom starred in the Calgary 1988 Olympics. Chelios was in the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics.

The lesson, as always: Chris Chelios is really damn old.

And some old people can still kick plenty of a**!!!!

Hope Hasek can get better sooner than later.
