Andy Strickland: "Wings and 'Hawks lead Forsberg race"

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Here is a quote pulled from a recent blog entry Andy Strickland posted at Hockeybuzz.com:

"I’m told by some pretty reliable hockey people that the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks are the two leading candidates to sign free agent forward Peter Forsberg. The future Hall of Famer is getting closer to making his return to the NHL which I’m told should happen around Christmas time. Forsberg has told a few people that Chicago and Detroit are his top two choices."

For the record, I don't believe this for a second, but I thought some here might be interested in reading this garbage.

Discuss.

He WILL NOT sign in Detroit. I dont believe this story. Of the two teams, he'd go to Chicago. Making them the most stacked f***in team in the league and a powerhouse fav for the Cup this season. That's scary considering Detroit is in the same division.

DO NOT WANT.

Actually, at, say, a 1mil... I'd think about it.

Exactly what my thought process was.

Honestly I would never think it would happen. But in the world of if's, I'd have a hard time not letting Forsberg on the team.

Plus I believe Forsberg when he said that he wouldn't sign with Detroit out of respect for the old rivalry.

My exact thought too.

I'll admit we could use some scoring help, but i think we could get our secondary guys to step up rather than relying on him in those half dozen games where he wouldn't be injured...

Obviously I sincerely doubt this would happen.

Although, in terms of Forsberg saying he wouldnt sign in Detroit out of respect for the rivalry I think that is well in the passed. The rivalry basically doesnt exist anymore. I do have to admit I have always wanted Forsberg in a way on the Wings and even though he is shell of his former self the nostalgic sense in me would still want him. It would all depend on money etc. I always thought he'd look good on the Wings. That being said, it's hockeybuzz and that should tell us that basiaclly means it's impossible for it to happen anyway

Not worth it. Plus I believe Forsberg when he said that he wouldn't sign with Detroit out of respect for the old rivalry.

I've always heard people say this, but I've never seen or heard proof of this. Maybe he said he wouldn't play for the Wings several years ago, but things can change. The Avs/Wings rivalry is long gone, and hasn't existed for years now. Anyone that wouldn't want Forsberg is crazy. The guy can still play, and Holland wouldn't sign him if he didn't come at a good price. Sure, he's injury prone, but our team isn't in a great situation right now either.

If he's willing to come play here at a fair price, then I'd definitely welcome him here.

I tend to more closely follow (and believe) Spector, and the word on there yesterday is this.

From the Detroit News via Spector: "Chris McCosky yesterday reported on his blog Red Wings GM Ken Holland has no interest in Forsberg and won't be scouting him."

He said it like 30 months ago. If anything, the rivalry is more fierce than it was then.

someone said the rivalry is more fierce than 30 months ago. But THIS rivalry is not the rivalry he talked about. His rivalry is over. IF Detroit and Chicago are his two top choices, you'd have to believe Chicago would be his first choice (if he still thinks it would upset the fans because of the rivalry.) BUT, once again, you have to look at who plays for Detroit, some of the most respected Swedes in the game. IF he came here, he would be in the most exclusive Swedish Clubhouse in the NHL, he would definately feel welcome and comfortable, but we dont have much cap space (after our injuries are back) so how much could Detroit offer him? Not unless they make a dealine deal for some picks just to unload some salary...

as always, if he stays healthy and signs for cheap, then sure I'd welcome him here, who knows tho!
