eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted January 18, 2011 (edited) You're right. Let's trade him yesterday. Four goalies in my lifetime have had winning playoff records with the Red Wings. Three retired as Wings, and the other plans to. Dominik Hasek, Chris Osgood, Mike Vernon, and Glen Hanlon. One of these things is not like the others... ogreslayer 1,069 Report post Posted January 21, 2011 Temporarily die during the Vernon era? 30-12 playoff record in 3 years with the Wings. Yeah, I'm fairly certain that would be a winning record right?

Doc Holliday 1,888 Report post Posted February 3, 2011 TRADE HIM FOR PUCKS NAOOOO!!! In all seriousness, not a great game by Howard. The defense in front of him was terrible, but he didn't help things. Come now, Howard! Lets get last year's goaltender back!
Original-Six 254 Report post Posted February 3, 2011 Wings need to get their s*** together defensively or get ready for a 1st round exit. If they didn't have the second best offense in the league they would be in deep s***. 2 Nev and Rick D reacted to this

xtrememachine1 795 Report post Posted February 3, 2011 14 games (out of 38) where Howie gave up 4+ goals. I'm rooting for the guy and want him to be the man, but this is getting really out of hand. His GAA is inching even closer to 3.00 and his save percentage is getting closer to falling below 90%. Its not all his fault, I do believe we need to address some things on defense, but he needs to be MUCH better in the playoffs. It is possible. We've seen Osgood do it. legaleaglewingsfan 75 Report post Posted February 3, 2011 (edited) According to the wire Kenny said he wasnt interested in Emery. I personally think Em would be an ok backup, not a Nabby by any stretch but I think he could give us a little insurance unless Ozzie is progressing better now and thats the reason why Kenny isn't showing any interest. Then again he might be just saying that as he is getting off the phone with Em's agent. Realizing he has previous personal issues, I still think that Detroit could get him into the program and he could be a good 1-2 with Howie for a while, if his hip holds up and he has something to prove. As an aside how are road conditions today in Detroit coming from the South, I have a ticket for Fri and am hoping the road crews will make it so I dont need to skate to the game. gcom007 1,465 Report post Posted February 3, 2011 I think this season's a wash for Howard at this point, but let's not get too hasty about the guy in general. When you look at last year and this year, you obviously see 2 very different goalies with profoundly different numbers. Look at the situations though and you see that last year he was a rookie, with that coming a bit of a wave of enthusiasm and a more "fun" experience with it all. But come playoffs and season 2, the pressure builds as you begin to realize what it takes to be a starter. That's a tough thing to learn especially after having such a great rookie year. It's likely that he's not as great of a goalie as he showed last year, but there's no way that I believe he's as bad of a goalie as he's been this year. I think the reality is somewhere in between, though I don't think it'll be really noticeable until next season.
stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted February 3, 2011 Inconsistent goalie consistently giving up 3+ goals. He has been been very inconsistent lately, but last night can not be included in the sample size... it was just a freak night and an anomaly... you very rarely will ever see games when a goalie gives up 5 goals where not one of them was weak and only one could you even say he could be partially responsible for (the Michalek one he could have played the angle better and probably poke checked the puck initially)... let the season play out, I think he will bounce back and finish strong... GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted February 3, 2011 I'm not ready to give up on Jimmy Howard entirely, but I'd hate to see such a strong team bow out early in the playoffs because of goaltending. Right now Howard is not getting the job done even though I definitely agree that the team's defense has let him down in many instances. That being said, I hope Chris Osgood gets healthy in early March and gets a string of starts down the stretch and regains his form heading into the playoffs. I think the Red Wings best option in goal for when it matters is Ozzie. Babcock just needs to give him a chance to get there.

I will be very surprised to ever see Ozzie play again to be honest... groin injuries on goalies are no joke, especially at his age and when it's a repeated injury... I have a strong feeling that Ozzie's career is going to have the unceremonious end that Maltby's did...
HankthaTank 1,100 Report post Posted February 3, 2011 Yeah, I mean the defense can only blamed so much. It was amazingly piss poor last night against one of the worst teams in the league, but some of these were definitely stoppable. We can continue to do these shootout, hopefully outscore the other team 7-5 type games (as entertaining as they are ) but we do need to play a little "defense" sometime soon. This month can prove to be a disaster. Just glad we got out of the Scosh with a W.
