Howard has been nothing short of excellent in his first season. That alone to me, is enough. He is playing very well in his first season. That aside, he gave the team a chance to win almost every night which was huge when the team was banged up.

Conklin was looking for a steep price tag (for the role he was meant to play) and after all the time the Wings spent trying to get Howard NHL ready they needed to at least see if he could play.

Howard wasn't even meant to play as much as he is now. It was expected that Osgood would start the majority of the games and that if Howard did screw the pooch they could give Osgood a tougher workload while shopping for another goaltender.

Howard, obviously. Though he hasn't looked great these last few games.

Lidstrom. Gold standard D all year, picking it up offensively now that we need it most, and he is +20 on a team that is a collective -8. Compare that to the other d-men with a good +/-..

I went with Howard, because his performance has been more unexpected and I'm just spoiled after seeing Lidstrom dominate for 15ish years.

Any answer other than Howard is ludicrous. All arguments aside about whether Osgood should be getting more starts or starting in the playoffs, fact is, Howard's been the guy playing, and as such he's about the only reason this mess of skaters even has had a prayer in many of these games. I know some people have been getting down on him since the break (surprise surprise ) but if you ask me, the guy can bomb for the rest of the year and we can miss the playoffs, but he's still the MVP of the team this year. Even if he slumps from here on out, his streak of quality, consistent play will have outpaced any other skater on the team this year without a doubt.

He proved a hell of a lot after even the management seemed to be preparing to write him off by the the trade deadline. He's definitely got some things to work on, but he's had a hell of a rookie year and if he stays focused, balances the pressure and works hard in the off-season and continuing into next season to keep improving and developing, he's got a lot of potential to have a real bright career.

Again, any way it winds up, it's been a hell of a rookie year and even if it doesn't end as well as it's gone at some points, there are a tremendous amount of positives for him to build on heading into next season.

So who's the MVP? Howard. No doubt about it.
