Hudler done with dynamo

I'm sure Hudler would put up good numbers in the AHL too. Actually I envision him being worse if he come back than when he left due to the slower play there.

Hudler obviously doesn't have an "out-clause" in his contract, the GM wouldn't be complaining if he didn't. I think it would be hysterical if Hudler disregards his contract TWICE, once here and once in the NHL.

I won't mind having Hudler back but if we don't have a definitive answer July 1st then I hope we move on. It was bad enough his stupid actions handcuffed Kenny last summer and I don't want it to happen again.

Just when I thought this team couldnt get any softer...

This team doesn't get tougher, but I don't think this team gets softer either.

Replacing noodle-boy Williams with Abby vs replacing Homer with Hudler is pretty much a wash.

Agreed... if he is coming back, it HAS to be by July 1st... also, I was pretty sure that he had an out clause... could be wrong...

as far as pure toughness, replacing Holmer with Abs and Williams with Hudler is a better comparison - but basically same point, still pretty much a wash.

I stopped reading after the bolded part. I think it's hilarious that you assume because your ecstatic about Hudler's POTENTIAL return that everyone else will be. I'm not at all happy about the Red Wings being forced to take back a player who sucked this year (and wasn't amazing before) regardless of who it is.

Not like this post isn't something you haven't posted 5 times before whining about wanting Hudler back.

You don't think Wings fans would rather have Hudler than Williams? Because that's basically what it comes down to.

If Maltby and Holmstrom retire, we're basically looking at replacing Williams, Homer, and Maltby with Hudler, Abdelkader, and a guy like Ritola, McGrath, or Oulahen,. Tell me how Wings fans would be unhappy with that change.

And "wasn't amazing before" is arguable given the fact that Hudler's 08-09 stats, not even factoring in ice time, tied for 73rd among all forwards in points, tied for 70th in goals, and tied for 60th in assists. Most players who put up similar kinds of numbers are generally worse than Hudler defensively if not far worse, and generally no better physically.

So what exactly about Hudler wasn't amazing?

Why are people assuming Holmstrom will retire?

There was an article a couple of weeks ago implying that he would probably be re-signed.

http://www.detnews.com/article/20100317/SPORTS0103/3170433/1128/rss16

Or has something changed since?

As for Hudler, yes please. Williams gone hopefully. I reckon Bert, Homer, Lids, Miller, Eaves, Helm, Abs, Lilja, Kindl will all be with the Wings next year. Possibly with 1m cap space.

Story just said they were in talks... until it's finalized, I wonder how serious it is... his body takes an absolute BEATING... I hope I'm wrong to be honest, I'd love for him to be back next year

82games, 23 goals, 34assists last year in NHL

54 games, 19 goals, 35 assists in the KHL... yeah that does suck.

So he sucks in the KHL... Seeing as though he was 8th in the league in scoring, who doesn't suck there? Top 3? Top 5? His pts per game went up 44%. What do you think he should have done to not suck?

Hudler scored 97 points in 76 games in the AHL. That projects to 105 had he played the other 6. Yeah, he'd put up good numbers. His 61 assists are a club record, and had he played the full 82 he would have the points record also. If Hudler were to play in the AHL he would score probably 60-70 goals and 100 assists, and if he spent additional seasons there he would blow out Michel Picard's career scoring records.

Hudler obviously doesn't have an "out-clause" in his contract, the GM wouldn't be complaining if he didn't. I think it would be hysterical if Hudler disregards his contract TWICE, once here and once in the NHL.

Yeah, I know you aren't interested in having an offensive whiz who is an excellent playmaker with very good finishing skills and if played on the top two lines will almost certainly be a point-per-game player, and having him signed for two seasons at a cap hit under $3 million. What a terrible thing to happen to the Wings. The only thing worse would be trading Holmstrom to Tampa for Stamkos, and Tollefson to Edmonton for their #1 pick. I mean, those things would be horrible moves for the Wings.

So he sucks in the KHL... Seeing as though he was 8th in the league in scoring, who doesn't suck there? Top 3? Top 5? His pts per game went up 44%. What do you think he should have done to not suck?

Outperformed talents who would still be first-liners in the NHL like Jagr and Fedorov...

Oh wait, NM.

Right, because I said him coming back would be a bad thing.

It would be a bad thing if we don't know whether or not he's coming back by July 1st because it would mean Kenny probably wouldn't do anything in the free agency and we wouldn't be able to get who we wanted.

Hopefully Hudler comes back so we can trade him for a good North American player that actually shows heart.

If Hudler was given Crosby's body, Hudler would be twice the player Crosby is.

Hudler's financial ability if pro-rated over 5 years would give him the potential to make the financial decisions for the new global econonmy.

Hudler for president.

Well, if Hudler is done with Dynamo, that's good news for us. He still has a year left on his contract with them, aside from the opt-out clause that allows him to return to the NHL.

This means either he is leaving the KHL entirely and going to a DIFFERENT European league, or he's back next season (most likely) and Wings fans will generally be pleased.

So with Hudler back, the current SIGNED Wings roster for next season:

Forwards:

Datsyuk $6.7m

Zetterberg $6,083,333

Franzen $3,954,545

Filppula $3m

Hudler $2.875m

Cleary $2.8m

Draper $1,583,333

Defense:

Rafalski $6m

Stuart $3.75m

Kronwall $3m

Ericsson $900k

Kindl $883,333

Goalie:

Osgood $1,416,666

Howard $716,666

Total cap hit: $43,662,876

Cap space (assuming no change): $13,137,124

Forwards on the active roster who will be RFAs this summer: Helm, Eaves, Miller

Other notable RFA forwards: Abdelkader

Forwards on the active roster who will be UFAs this summer: Holmstrom, Williams, Bertuzzi, Maltby

Defensemen on the active roster who will be RFAs this summer: Meech

Other notable RFA defensemen: Kolosov

Defensemen on the active roster who will be UFAs this summer: Lidstrom, Lilja, Lebda

Other notable UFA defensemen: Janik

All of the signed players I listed above will likely play on the regular roster, with Kindl possibly rotating in with Ericsson and whoever the #7 is.

The Wings need to sign five forwards and one defenseman to their everyday roster, plus anywhere from one to three spare players.

If Lilja continues his pro career, he will almost certainly be re-signed. If not, he will probably be replaced with someone who would most likely be RFA Meech, who has solid potential as a two-way defenseman, is quick and versatile, and is very cost-effective. Assuming Lilja returns, he likely rotates in with Kindl and Ericsson to get them as much playing time as possible.

No we're looking at Lidstrom. Interviews have suggested he'll return. He probably takes a pay cut, likely down to tha $4-5m range. If he doesn't return, that's probably about what's spent on his "replacement".

So having determined that the Wings probably spend about $7m on their defense at the top end, figure the Wings will then see about $6m left to spend on six forwards.

Hudler returning throws a wrench in keeping scoring forwards, and Bertuzzi is out unless he is willing to accept a similar deal to what he has. So let's focus on the cheaper guys, while leaving open a spot for what Bertuzzi would have to accept. Abdelkader is a darn good player, but he likely won't see much of a raise. Figure him in at $900k. Eaves and Miller can be seen at $750k each, and Helm at $1m.

That's $3.4m, leaving $2.6m. Still left as UFA from this season's roster are Holmstrom, Maltby, Williams, and Bertuzzi. Williams is probably gone with Hudler returning. The Wings would still need to sign two forwards, so that they have 12 regulars and a spare. With his season-ending injury, Maltby may choose to retire after the season. If the team wins the Cup or comes close, it's highly IMO likely both Maltby and Homer are gone. This would leave about $2m for Bert and another $500k to sign that last guy, perhaps even a guy like Evan McGrath or Ryan Oulahen who has been waiting for a chance. Keeping Kris Newbury as the spare forward is another potential move the Wings might make.

But if the Wings were able to keep Bert while losing Homer, the forwards would be:

Zetterberg

Datsyuk

Franzen

Hudler

Filppula

Bertuzzi

Cleary

Eaves

Miller

Helm

Abdelkader

Draper

Newbury (?)

Lidstrom (?)

Kronwall

Rafalski

Stuart

Lilja

Ericsson

Kindl

Which projects lines out to, keeping lines that have shown chemistry recently:

Hudler/Datsyuk/Franzen

Filppula/Zetterberg/Bertuzzi

Miller/Abdelkader/Cleary

Draper/Helm/Eaves

Newbury (?)

Lidstrom/Rafalski

Kronwall/Stuart

Lilja-Ericsson-Kindl

Howard/Osgood

PP1: Hudler/Datsyuk/Franzen/Lidstrom/Rafalski

PP2: Filppula/Zetterberg/Bertuzzi/Kronwall/Ericsson-Kindl

PK1: Helm/Miller/Lidstrom/Lilja

PK2: Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Kronwall/Stuart

PK3: Filppula/Cleary

That's kinda scary good, actually. And if Homer doesn't retire, it probably shifts the lines around somewhat as Bertuzzi is likely not to take the $2m that keeps him on the roster.

I assume by "Newbery" you mean "Ritola" since Ritola's waiver-free AHL eligibility ends this year and the Wings still think highly of his potential.

agreed.

my projected roster for next year:

Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Johan Franzen ($3.955m)

Todd Bertuzzi ($1.500m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Jiri Hudler ($2.875m)

Drew Miller ($0.750m) / Justin Abdelkader ($0.900m) / Daniel Cleary ($2.800m)

Kris Draper ($1.583m) / Darren Helm ($1.000m) / Patrick Eaves ($0.800m)

Mattias Ritola ($0.600m)

Nicklas Lidstrom ($3.450m) / Brian Rafalski ($6.000m)

Brad Stuart ($3.750m) / Niklas Kronwall ($3.000m)

Andreas Lilja ($1.000m) / Jonathan Ericsson ($0.900m)

Jakub Kindl ($0.883m)

Jimmy Howard ($0.717m) / Chris Osgood ($1.417m)

ROSTER: 22; PAYROLL: $53.663m; CAP ROOM: $3.137m BONUSES: $0.000m

that looks good, but homer wants to keep playing. and the way he's played this year, no one is gonna deny him coming back for another year, at which point he would probably consider retirement.

bertuzzi has been ok, kinda hot and cold. he wants to finish his career in detroit, but there;s alot of good guys in the organization that are gonna get their shot sooner than later...ritola, abdelkader, maybe jeremy williams...bertuzzi may be the odd man out.

I agree 100% - I actually said earlier this was based purely on the thought that Holmstrom is hanging them up, if he's back, I think Bert is let go and then basically plug Holmstrom in, in that scenario.

Cleary 09/10 60games 13goals 16assist 29points

08/09 74games 14goals 26assist 40points

Franzen 08/09 71games 34goals 25assist 59points

09/10 21games 10goals 7assist 17 points

Filppula 08/09 80games 12goals 28assist 40points

09/10 49games 11goals 24assist 35points

you may correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Hudler's new contract is only a wee bit more than Cleary's and less than both Filp's and Mule's, so I guess they SUCK also.

Anyway, I hope to death that Hudler returns to the NHL. While he was small and questionable defensively at times, he knew how to shoot the puck better than most Wings players do now, and was good at picking out open ice in the offensive zone.
