Just a thought, but would it be possible to gather some kind of collection of messages from the fans to Shawn? I'm sure it could be delivered to him through the Red Wings organisation somehow, and maybe it would in part help him find the strength needed to beat this. If not, you might want to contact someone at the team offices and ask. It sounds like they caught it in the early stages, and with an aggressive treatment program, there is a good prognosis. Pretty sure I heard Ken and Larry say last night that it was caught pretty early on So hopefully they can get in there and kick Leukemia in the face! I've got a close friend who's going through chemo right now for testicular cancer, so we'll just toss Burr into the thought circle and call 'er a day. freshy 181 Report post Posted March 1, 2011 Horrible news:( I loved Shawn Burr on those late 80's Wings team. I Knew playing like Stevie was a pipe dream, but I could relate to Burr's solid two way game and tried to model my style after him. My Father was diagnosed with AML at the age 57 in Oct. of 2003 and died 3 months later after 2 rounds of aggresive chemo. He was a healthy, fit guy, still playing hockey in a Flint mens league at the time. It is a brutal illness. Multiple Chemo rounds to try to completly annialate any leukemic cells, which wipes out your immune system in the process. Then a bone marrow transplant which hopefully your body accepts. My old man seemed to be beating it, then contracted Pneumonia when his wbc were eradicated from the chemo and died within 3 days. He didn't even make it to the chance for a BMT. His younger Brother also was diagnosed with it this past september and past away last month after virtually the same experiance. Needless to say I ******* hate Acute Myloid Leukemia... martyrme19 73 Report post Posted July 20, 2011 Just a fun little note but after his hockey career he was coaching the travel hockey team called the Port Huron Flags. I have no idea if he has been coaching them up until this point - but he was known for his emotional displays behind the bench where he would often through things onto the ice and get booted quite often.
