The MTS Center now has the distinction of being the smallest NHL arena.

Thats already sold out for 5 years with an 8000 person waiting list that was capped. Oh ya, the people on the waiting list are paying $50 a year to be on it.

According to the Winnipeg Sun, Claude Noel will be announced as the head coach of the franchise. [LINK]

They've also released their pre-season schedule, and GM Kevin Cheveldayoff says that their draft pick will be given a 'generic NHL sweater'. [LINK]

This is correct. The NHL owns the rights to the Jets name and logo. Bettman has already said, if TNSE wants it; they can have it.

However, I really doubt they will be the Jets. I believe Mark Chipman wants to start off fresh and build his own team and culture. I want it to be the Jets, but in this day and age of expansion and new culture of hockey; it will be something really stupid and the logo will be some cartoon fantasy animal.

Winnipeg Falcons - Barf

Winnipeg Moose - better than Falcons but still barf

Winnipeg Whiteout - Rolls off the tongue but doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Really, the best thing they could do is call them the Jets. Merch is continuing to fly off the shelves and I am pretty sure if they take over the Jets name, they get a small percentage of the revenue the NHL has made from Merch sales.

Probably right.

I'll feel kinda sorry for the fans of the team; the color/logo/name combo will probably be another mess.

Hopefully they'll go with the Jets, and their old uni's from the 90's.

Winnipeg Ice-Hawks (Blackhawks...)

Winnipeg Bison (too close to the Buffalo)

Manitoba Moose (best option if you ask me)

Winnipeg Freeze

Yuck...

Winnipeg Arctic Fox

Winnipeg Owls

Winnipeg Wolves

Winnipeg Wolverines

These are all indigenous animals in Manitoba...

Even calling them something new doesn't mean all sorts of merch cash flow. The only direct revenue they get is from merch sold within their own stores. All other merch revenue is split between all 30 teams. I seriously doubt they will notice any negative effects; only positive if they call them the jets. Everyone with Jets gear is just going to wear that anyhow. Sure some people will go to the arena and drop $250 on a new jersey but a majority of them will show up in Jets gear. Just look at games in places like Carolina; you still have people showing up in whalers gear sometimes and it's not even in the same location that once had a team.

Winnipeg Jets with a logo redesign and new colors done right = ton of merch sold

I personally like the Winnipeg/Manitoba Rebels as a second choice. Anyone curious as to why I say that, look up the Red River Rebellion.

Anything other than Jets=fail on their part IMO

Agreed 100% - I think TNSE probably wanted to name them the Moose and was probably planning to when they acquired them, but due to the overwhelming outcry in Winnipeg, I have a gut feeling that they are going to go with the Jets - which would be a fantastic decision on their part... as already touched on, the revenue from merch alone would be worth it...

Winnipeg expected to name team just prior to making their 7th overall Pick tonight.

Awesome news, lets all cross our fingers -

I'm 60/40 on this. 40% thinks it will be the Jets; but most likely Manitoba Jets. I am 60% in that it will be something totally new. Think about it; if it were the Jets; why would they be handing their 7th pick a generic NHL sweater?

They won't be, they're announcing their name (and I'm assuming logo) before the pick, so they obviously already made the decision internally and will have the jersey present at the time of the pick would be my guess...

If it was Phoenix returning to Winnipeg, then yes it would be the Jets.

Me thinks it will be something new.

"WINNIPEG'S DRAFT PICK WILL WEAR JERSEY WITH LEAGUE'S COLOURS" per tsn.

Unless they are just pulling the wool over our eyes.

That's actually a decent point. While I want the new Winnipeg team to retain the Jets name and logo, if they do decide to go in another direction, I wouldn't mind the Manitoba Moose. Good, solid hockey name.

The fact that a jersey design hasn't been leaked yet makes me think it'll be the Jets. If they are announcing the logo/mascot before their draft pick, you would think they wouldn't be using the generic NHL jersey they stated they would use for the draft.

The Winnipeg Jets are back!

DarrenDreger

Correction. Secret is out. Wpg Jets returns.

Just saw this. Really the only right move to make. Now they'll probably give them dumbass 'updated' jerseys so Winnipegers (Winnipegians? Winnipegites?) have to buy all new sweaters.

So I'm wondering, does the new team absorb the previous Jets history...or does Phoenix still hold ownership of the original Jets material?

That was something that they were mulling over within the processes of deciding whether or not to become the Jets. It's somewhat difficult because the Coyotes have done their Ring of Honor thing for former Jets. It'll be interesting to see, since it isn't the same franchise - just the same name.

I have the feeling that they'll do without the Jets history and maybe retire the number of some former Jets for the fans, if nothing else.

Would like the NHL to take a page from the NFL on this one & give Winnipeg their legacy back sort of like how Cleveland got to keep the Browns name/history when that ass Modell fled to Baltimore.

Glad to see that the team will retain the "Jets" name, and hopefully the same logo with similar jerseys from the 90's.

Not so sure why some are concerned that the old Jets name/logo combo will bring about a poor past performances?..The Red Wings were a dismal team throughout the 70's, and didn't have any hope until the Ilitch's bought the team in 1982.
