So I know this may not be a popular idea with some or most of the people on here. But what if we could get Souray as a 4/5/6 guy... He's basically guaranteed the 5 million or so that Edmonton owes him. Maybe we could sign him for one season and see how it goes. I can't recall exactly how his defensive game is, but I know he's a positive guy to have for the PP and could help replace some of the offense if not all that Rafalski had for us.

He may be willing to come inexpensive due to the injury issues of his past and the fact that he more than likely wants to find some sort of redemption. He could find it here.

Any thoughts, or am I way off base?

Don't know about Souray. Dunno if his game is up to par with the nhl level considering he was in the AHL all last season with little results. Meaning like 4 goals and 15 assists. Not great. Also he might be a head case as well. Now having said that, wouldn't mind trying him out for a one year deal or something CHEAP too. But I dunno not really an option unless Edmonton buys him out and it might not happen we'll see...

I actually thought about this before, it's a really interesting idea because he does have tons of offense, decent enough defense, huge shot, PP quarterback, fights, hits. etc. My two biggest concerns are his injury history (lesser concern), and the fact that by all accounts he's a huge douchebag and his prima dona attitude is a locker room distraction. Probably better to stick with Wiz.

I'd rather not see the Wings play games with 12 forwards, five defenseman, and one guy who can do nothing besides shoot the puck. Souray is slow, injury prone, and about 10% as good defensively as Rafalski.

Decent defense? I disagree. He's absolutely notorious for being horrendous defensively. He's not a power play quarterback either; he's not a good passer. In Montreal, Markov was generally the quarterback when Souray was on; in Edmonton, it was often Visnovsky.

Quoting you again, love the pic. But agreed. No thanks. Hearing that name makes me cringe. Since leaving Montreal he has been nothing above "average"... And I use that word loosely.

I recall a Habs fan saying, in the 2007 offseason, "Please re-sign Souray, just don't ever play him on the PK or at even strength!"

That said, he certainly has gone downhill fast even in the shooting category.

This. Especially after this Edmonton debacle that he's been entrenched in.

He also had only 4 goals and nine assists in 39 games with Edmonton two seasons ago.

Point man on the power play rather (lots of power play goals is the essence), and you're right, he is terrible defensively. I don't know where I got that from.

He has totaled eight goals in the past two seasons, and one of those seasons was in the AHL.

Look I'm not arguing in favor of the guy or saying he still has it and we should sign him, but at one point in time he had a cannon of a shot and scored a bunch of power play goals, can we at least agree on that or do you want to nit pick it a little more?

AT ONE TIME Bernie Federko and Tony McKegney were all-stars...

I'd still take them over Souray.

He was burried in The AHL..... By Edmonton..... does any more need to be said about his abilities?

there's more to that than just his skill. he requested a trade from edmonton, didn't get picked up on waivers, and so was sent down after he was told not to attend training camp.

he does have defensive issues and injury problems, but he is good offensively and plays mean.

still, i don't think this would be a good signing. oldish with a declining body and a questionable attitude - edmonton assigned him to hershey so as not to spread his bad juju to the oilers prospects FCS.

I was at game 1 of the AHL series between the Hershey Bears and the Charlotte Checkers when I was in Hershey for All-State chorus. Souray was pyloned several times. My friend who wasn't a big hockey fan even thought his "suckiness" stood out. When I told him about the huge contract he was riding, he was flabbergasted.
