Guest The Production Line Report post Posted February 21, 2012 Do you guys remember what happened the last time the Wings traded for a defenseman before the deadline? This really isn't that bad of a trade. The Wings were going to draft late first round anyways and the Wings do more with late draft picks than they do early ones. This is for the here and now, not about four years from now. We just got a solid defenseman, better than Kindl, Commie, and Pylon, for practically nothing. 1 shoe reacted to this

Crashnburnluder 385 Report post Posted February 21, 2012 I look at it this way, Detroit couldn't give him the ice time so they paid a 26-30 overall pick for someone to give him the ice time and help him develop. At 26 he is going to start playing his best hockey, I hope. Crash 2 Uncle Danny and 55fan reacted to this
Guest Crymson Report post Posted February 21, 2012 Aren't you a guy who started a thread last year to make fun of Quincey's poor season? Now you seem to be admitting that Holland made a mistake. Quincey had a catastrophic '10-'11 season. And no, I still don't think that letting Quincey go was a mistake on Holland's part, as every sign pointed to Meech being the superior specimen at that stage. Compare this to San Jose's situation with Toskala and Kiprusoff competing for the backup spot. Sometimes players just develop in unforseeable ways. I'm nervous about this trade, but hopefully it'll bear out. Well its been nothing but bad news for the Wings today as first Pavel gets hurt, then they trade their first round pick for a journeyman castoff and if thats not enough they go into to Chicago and lose tonight. Can someone remind me how I place users on ignore? I can't figure it out. 1 hillbillywingsfan reacted to this
Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted February 21, 2012 (edited) People are going to grumble about this because of the situation, I think. If we were adding a 26-year-old RFA with 30-35 point potential and he DIDN'T have a history with the team, people would likely be more receptive to the idea. I completely agree, but honestly you cannot re-contextualize this. The fact remains that we are overpaying for a player that would have still been with us if we didn't choose Meech over him. I can get over that... if it didn't mean we are going to do the exact same thing with Kindl now because of it. "Fool me once shame on you, fool me 8 times or more shame on me..." -Futurama. I hope that isn't our new motto... I just hope that we resign him and get 40-50 pts out of him at least three years... That is what I expect out of a first round pick traded. EDIT: that is out of an offensive defenseman added via trade. Edited February 21, 2012 by Majsheppard
Holmstrom96 347 Report post Posted February 21, 2012 I hope we don't end up regretting this in 2040, when this first round draft pick would have played his first game as at age 42. One thing I've learned, don't doubt Kenny. Somehow, this will work out. Also, is it too late to throw Ericsson into the deal? 3 Byorski, Ram and Tim.D reacted to this
Ozzie30 170 Report post Posted February 21, 2012 giving him away for nothing was the stupidest move ever.... also if their is a lockout next year that first round pick could turn out to be first overall... CBA expires in September, so there's no chance of that happening unless it was a 2013 pick.

HockeytownRules19 902 Report post Posted February 21, 2012 Kenny Holland is the Man! Fantastic Deal! “We got some kids (in the organization),'' Holland said. “The time is now. It's not a rental. We think he makes us better and deeper on the back end. That first-round pick, if it's a good pick, he would have played in Detroit five years from now.'' :siren:
Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted February 21, 2012 Am i missing something here? How are people not more upset by this trade? I mean i know that he has improved since he left here getting to play more minutes elsewhere, but i just don't see how he is worth a 1st round pick. I know that the draft is a craps shoot and you can bust big time in the first round, especially late in the first round like we are projected to be but still, how is this not a bigger concern to people? We have so few early picks usually anyways, and to just give up our first rounder to get quincey back kind of bugs me. He may help out on the blue line and give us another guy for our 2nd PP unit, but was he worth a first rounder? Also, does this deal make anyone else think that Holland couldn't make a deal for anyone else better? And he kind of jumped on it just to fill the void with the best he could? Should we not expect any other upgrades before the 27th? I mean he basically sent away our first round draft pick which i was hoping was going to be used in a package along with a player or two to land someone bigger at the deadline. Now all we have left as trade bait are our own roster players that most believe teams are interested in, and our few exceptional prospects that teams would find appealing but are players we shouldn't really part with. Im confused, upset and perplexed by this trade. Am i the only one?? I am starting to think he is more reactionary of a general manager than I ever thought before. This strikes me as the same sort of move as resigning E. Overpaying because he is not willing to sit still and suffer for not adding. I am just happy we haven't lost a big prospect yet. Yet being the operable word... I still have a bad feeling we are going to move Tatar for someone who is on our team for three years and Tatar becomes a super star. I have nightmares. If Brad Stuart really does want to go back to Northern California the he should definitively say so in order for us to trade him to a California team without losing him for nothing. I would move Stuart for Pavelski... I really would.
russianswede919293 95 Report post Posted February 21, 2012 Wings get a 26 year old D-man who is already familiar with the system who can play the 2nd PP unit and on the PK (both slots that needed filling). Additionally he is a physical guy who can dish a nice check. He is a longer term solution too possibly who could possibly play with us and fill Stuart's spot if he leaves. Takes the pressure to over pay for a similar D-man in the offseason way off. Nice move for this year and next year. 3 Ram, 55fan and Uncle Danny reacted to this

Guest Crymson Report post Posted February 21, 2012 (edited) Okay that is bulls***. WE KNEW. He played in the playoffs that one year right before we let him go... in 2007 and played 13 games and was an even player. The following season he got the grand rapids treatment. The tape is there, everyone could see it. This is such a case of tremendous "in hindsight" thinking. Nobody KNEW that Quincey would be an effective defenseman. YOU know NOW, because you have that hindsight. If everyone KNEW, then Holland would have kept Quincey and not Meech. But at that stage, Quincey was a depth defenseman who was unremarkable and appeared to have no offensive talent whatsoever. I don't need the tape. Barring a few games that I missed when I was on airplanes or out of the country--none of which Meech or Quincey were playing in--I watched every Red Wings game in the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 seasons. In 2007 Quincey played in the playoffs, yes, and he was ineffective. He was there as a super-depth defenseman, because both Kronwall and Lebda, and then Kronwall and Schneider, were injured. Yes, he was behind Lebda on the depth chart, and rightfully so. He played eight minutes per game, almost entirely against the other team's fourth line, and contributed no offense. He was carefully protected from facing the other side's top two lines; in the instances in which he found himself on the ice against them, he was often left in the dust. He was rightfully sent to Grand Rapids the next season; Lebda and Chelios were much better options. Next came 2008, when the Wings had that terrible rash of injuries to the defense in January and February. Quincey and Meech were both called up. Meech played with tremendous energy, and he ended up quarterbacking the first power play unit for a few games. He wasn't producing a lot, but he was everywhere on the ice when he was out there, and everyone was giving him rave reviews. Quincey was an afterthought. He played, yes, but he was unremarkable, and he was sent back to the minors well before either Meech or Ericsson. Fast forward to training camp in the summer of 2008. Meech played well. Quincey did not. Ken Holland then made the very obvious decision to keep the defenseman who appeared more versatile and effective. You can look back and whine all you want about how Quincey turned out to be worthwhile whereas Meech did not, but try to remember that it looked like the exact opposite at the time. It is easy to say in hindsight it was something that was wrong, and I know we wouldn't have gotten anything... I think we should just admit we f***ed up, and this trade is the public announcement that we f***ed up so bad, we are willing to f*** up even greater to make amends. We knew he was a solid player, and I just don't buy this as an intelligent move. "We" didn't do anything. Ken Holland did, and he made what appeared to almost everyone to be the right decision at the time. Have a drink and cool down. This isn't the end of the world. EDIT: that is out of an offensive defenseman added via trade. There's always that chance, but Kindl at least has gotten almost 100 games on the Wings for them to evaluate him. Quincey got what less than 30? Kindl should be much more of a known quantity. I had forgotten because he hasn't been here in a few seasons, but even if Kindl turns out to be as good of a player, Quincey is only a year older than Kindl. Plus we haven't gotten rid of Kindl yet or anything, though it seems unlikely he'll play much now.

shoe 165 Report post Posted February 21, 2012 Like other have said I also think there is more dealing to be done now. Someone off the roster is on their way out. I think this trade has 2 parts In a way I see as Quincey plus player X (from another team) for a LATE 1st round pick plus player "K" off the red wings roster. It MAY balance its self out. I like the fact the wings are getting a guy that is going to take a "full time spot" there wont be any questions of who the 6th defenceman is if everyone is healthy. The way I see things is the wings have traded for a ! and taken an ? out of he line up.
Hairy Lime 234 Report post Posted February 21, 2012 A 1st round draft pick? I would of rather had Downie for a 1st round pick. Don't get me wrong, Quincey is a better option than either Commie or Kindle, but for a 1st round draft pick? Some fans think that Holland has something up his sleeve, but I always assumed that Detroit's 1st round draft pick would have to play a part in any significant deal? As for this deal, I'm indifferent... Are we better for it? Yes. Am I jumping up and down? Not really. We'll see.

We got a player we can win now with over a pick who may not even play, and of it does, it won't be for another 4 years. Kindl and Tatar for a top six winger and then we win the cup with ease. Z and D for the C 712 Report post Posted February 21, 2012 I would move Stuart for Pavelski... I really would. I'd love to get Pavelski, but giving Stuart up, especially to the Sharks, would be bittersweet. Stuart will be an essential piece to a Cup. Not sure giving him up is worth it, unless it's too good an offer to pass up.
Guest Crymson Report post Posted February 21, 2012 (edited) It's ironic that all of the doomsayings and screamings here derive directly from the fact that the Wings have had such great management for such a long time. LeftWinger 4,963 Report post Posted February 21, 2012 And, per Ansar Khan, what Holland said: Ken Holland: “I talked to (Colorado GM) Greg Sherman a few days ago about Quincey and we didn't have a fit. In the last 48 hours, Steve (Yzerman) called me and said he had a deal to get Quincey and asked if we're interested. We got a 26-year-old defenseman who's got experience. He's played 20-plus minutes. He competes. He's coming into his prime. We expect him to be on our team going forward, and he improves our team on the back end this year. We should have never let him go. It worked out great for him. He got an opportunity in L.A .and Colorado." And this should end the debate and the thread.... I trust Holland. I hope he gets a forward, someone earlier mentioned Ott, WOW, would that be cool!!?!? Morrow is always on my wish list, but if Ott could be had, there goes the idea that we aren't tough....You listening Cherry? 2 Nightfall and Tim.D reacted to this

Red Wings Addict 787 Report post Posted February 21, 2012 Kyle Quincey Plus: Good Skater, Speedy and Agile... Physical Player, Throws Hard Hits... Nice Shot... Handles Puck Well... Very Good Defensively... Will jump up into the play... Minus: Needs to Bulk Up... Inconsistent... Organizational Comments:"I think he played a huge factor for us the first 2/3rds of the season helping us with the transition of losing some of our veteran D., and being one of our go-to guys, and played in all situations. He plays solid D, physical, gritty, either side of the puck, and yet he can also add offense and play on your powerplay. He's a very well liked player, he's got a great future ahead of him, and I think he is just going to get better as he gets more confidence and more playing time." Griffins Head Coach Greg Ireland What GRC says: 2007-08: Quincey rebounded from a slow start to play his best stretch of hockey as a pro the second half. After a trip to Detroit, the physical blueliner tuned up his game, meshing his physical edge with some offensive mojo, missing since his rookie season. One of the biggest improvements in his game down the stretch was his consistency, in effort, intensity and results on the ice. Kyle is out of options, and is likely to snag the last defensive spot in Detroit next season. 2006-07: Whether from injuries or an inconsistent lineup, Kyle's game dropped a notch after the first of year. Inconsistency and defensive lapses marred some pretty good stretches of play for the physical defenseman. He still has the skills, but just doesn't seem to put them together every game. That being said he was one of the more effective blueliner's on the Griffins, and was recalled to Detroit at the end of the season where he scored his first NHL goal. 2005-06: Kyle was slow to recover from a concussion suffered around the New Year, but he recovered to play some pretty exciting hockey for a rookie blueliner. He had some ugly numbers in the playoffs, but his normal defensive partner (Lebda) may have been the cause for a large part of that. Quincey played beyond his experience most of the season and should pick it up another notch next season.
