Jedi 1,865 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 In case anyone missed it, Ed Oczyk proved his idiocy in fine fashion during the Oilers/Hawks game... ...Chicago Blackhawks’ broadcaster Ed Olczyk took affront at the way Yakupov ducked a hit by Chicago irritant Daniel Carcillo during Monday night’s game. Here’s a full transcript of Olczyk’s commentary in the above video of the incident (which angle I don’t believe was shown on the Sportsnet broadcast). “We’re going to go back to that hit. It’s really important, and I want all you young hockey players to watch this. If you are Nail Yakupov of the Edmonton Oilers, you cannot do that to a player that’s coming. That’s a dangerous play by Nail Yakupov. Because what happens is, when you duck like that, that player is going to go over the top of your shoulder and hit his face or his neck against the boards. To me that should be a penalty on Yakupov. I see it at the amateur level, I’d like to see USA Hockey and amateur referees take control of that type of play. I hope it’s not being taught by coaches, but that’s a dangerous play. Somebody’s going to get really hurt when a player ducks like that.” The author of the article wraps it up nicely. number9 3,297 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 Didn't Fedorov used to do that all the time? I remember Stevie Y injuring a certain Chrissy Pronger that way too. To me that's the risk you run when you go to run someone. Can't tell someone not to dodge a hit if they can. 1 Hockeymom1960 reacted to this

I want Gary Thorne and Bill Clemente back. Gary and Bill were awesome. Some people gave them crap, but man they were really good. I miss hearing them together as well. They were on in an interview together on NHL Home Ice Radio last year and Gary said the main reason he isn't doing hockey is his contract with ESPN. He gets paid very well there and the NBC Sports Network (or Versus) could never match it. Still, he missed calling hockey, especially the playoffs which he believes is the best postseason of any professional sport. 1 thegerkin reacted to this
shoobiedoobin 138 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 (edited) Olczyk's always been an idiot. And not that kind where you say it because no one likes him, but honestly he's just a dullard who is extremely biased with moronic opinions. And this just adds to his sparkling track record of stupid comments. If it's not stuff like this it's him hating whoever is playing Chicago and trying not to scream it out loud. No one likes that. It's why Ken and Mick are so great. They're obvious homers and don't hide it, and they acknowledge and often compliment the other team. haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 I hate to say it because I think Olczyk is one the most biased, unprofessional broadcaster to do network games, but I kind of agree with him. I'd have to see it real time to know for sure. The hit looked a bit late but it's hard to tell in slow mo. And it's with Carcillo, so I have a hard time feeling bad about it. But you shouldn't submarine out of a hit along the boards like that. It's one thing to try to spin and get your whole body out of the way, but if you keep a leg or your lower body in the line of fire, you do send a player headfirst into the boards. And in the interest of your own safety, ducking down like that increases the chances of taking a shot to the head. Carcillo's elbow did come awfully close to Yakupov's head, but he had his elbow pretty tucked until he missed. I will say he's an idiot for thinking there should be a penalty for this. It's more just a right way to play the game.
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 Oh, Eddie. Everyone knows the person making the hit is the one that does so at their own risk. There's no honor in letting yourself get creamed if you can avoid it.

evilzyme 769 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 He's stupid in how he says it, and who would get hurt. They shouldn't be worried about Carcillo, if he wants to run the check, he can run the check. The problem with going down like that, is that you're risking injury to yourself in the skates of Yakupov. Atleast, the way i've always been taught when playing hockey is, you don't go down like that because you're more at risk at getting your head staple gunned to the boards and getting kneed there. I wouldn't be complaining or worried about the safety of Carcillo, as you can catch yourself running the boards. I would be complaining, and he should've just said, "Yakupov put himself in a dangerous position there. To all you young hockey players out there, you see how vulnerable Yakupov's head is in that position? That's why we don't go down when a hit is coming." Not, "Oh my god, look at Yakupov, he made that play so dangerous on Carcillo.." 3 haroldsnepsts, Din758 and EuroWing reacted to this

lacrossekid2 5 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 What an idiot! He's just a complete dumba**. Who the heck just takes the hit? Haha the goal isn't to get absolutely slaughtered, that's like telling a running back he can't juke out a defender because that guy might get hurt missing him. LeftWinger 5,131 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 (edited) This is seriously retarded. I know I shouldn't care what he says, but this is what NBC and the NHL has presenting Hockey to the rest of the country. This guy should be fired for that comment alone. Just because he has just proven that he knows hardly jack about the sport! I hope his email or twitter is getting flooded with "nice" things today! Guest Crymson Report post Posted February 27, 2013 I find it unlikely that Olczyk would have said this if there weren't a Blackhawk involved. It is beyond me why he is allowed to do color commentary for games involving the Blackhawks, as that is a team that, as he has repeatedly demonstrated, he cannot remain unbiased in regards to. He cannot even stop himself from taking potshots at the Blackhawks' rivals (i.e. his comment that the Wings are cheaters) when those teams aren't playing the 'Hawks. He's annoying and inept. Even the annoying and inept McGuire isn't quite that bad, because at least he makes stupid comments about every team equally. 2 esteef and Hockeymom1960 reacted to this
