unsaddleddonald 357 Report post Posted October 22, 2013 NOTE: I didn't see tonight's attempt, but it sounded similar to what I will mention. This is more of an observation than a critique (the guy has scored more shootout goals than anyone). But has anyone noticed that Pav has kind of regulated himself to using the same move everytime in shootouts? He either finishes backhand or pulls it to his quick forehand move. For a guy as creative as Pav, I'm kind of surprised he uses one move (with 2 finishes?) so much... This is the backhand: And the forehand:

Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted October 22, 2013 It's really effective, so why change it up? Also, it seems like if Datsyuk doesn't score it's because he missed the net. I can only think of a few instances where a save was actually made on him. 1 CaliforniaWingsFan reacted to this

Guest mjtm77 Report post Posted October 22, 2013 It does seem tho that recently he hasn't been scoring much. I don't know the stats myself but I would bet that he is around 20 percent in the last couple seasons
nosyt612 103 Report post Posted October 22, 2013 (edited) It's not the All Star game shootout where you win for style points. He has the most shootout goals all time in the nhl so i'd leave it up to him to decide which move to use. Here's the nhl page for shootout stats: http://www.nhl.com/ice/playerstats.htm?season=20112012&gameType=2&team=DET&position=S&country=&status=&viewName=shootouts He was 28% last year and 45% the year before. Goalies seem to be expecting it? I dunno...
dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted October 22, 2013 That video of the backhand isn't really a move he's used a lot. I have no problem with him using his most effective moves most of the time. In fact, that forehand move is close to unstoppable when he executes well, so imo he should just go with that 9 times out of 10. But last season or two he's had too many lazy SO attempts, like tonight. Can't ask him to score everytime, but he's got the ability to.

GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted October 22, 2013 Goalies do study shootout moves, so I can see him needing to switch it up a little. That quick move on the forehand is hard to stop because it's so fast. If he misses again next time, I'd have Cleary be the first shooter instead. 2 Dabura and hillbillywingsfan reacted to this

GoalieManPat 1,007 Report post Posted October 22, 2013 I see it as a positive. Sure its only two moves but his approach and movement is the same so the goaltender really has no idea what hes going to do.
Dabura 12,207 Report post Posted October 22, 2013 Mick and Ken (well, mostly Ken, I guess) said he's the all-time leader in shootout goals, with 33. Right behind him: Parise, with 32.

Wings_Dynasty 267 Report post Posted October 22, 2013 Datsyuk either scores or misses. He hardly ever gets blocked and usually the goalie is left out of position. I think he is doing fine. Just needs to hit the net more.

dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted October 22, 2013 When dats misses we lose - when dats scores we win. this is the trend more often than not in the shootout. he shoots first and sets the tone. Pretty much. I'd like to see Babs put Pav as the 2nd or 3rd shooter actually. Give him a chance to win the game, or the chance to keep the Wings alive. I think some of our other guys, maybe Tatar, could do well as the 1st shooter as there is less pressure.
Kira 451 Report post Posted October 22, 2013 I guess his theory is, if it ain't broke don't screw with it. Unfortunately, goalies are starting to catch on. So maybe it's time to pull a new trick out of the bag. He's got enough of them to do that, it's just finding the one that hits the spot. 1 unsaddleddonald reacted to this

Exactly. The run-up is the same, so the goalie has no idea which way Datsyuk is going. It's the best combo of moves one could have.
