While funny - but I think the joke just might kick the Canes in the balls

JK isn’t some 60 plus pts stud in the making - he’s a pretty ordinary player for the Habs

The only way this really favors the Canes is if JK hits career numbers for the Canes and the draft picks they surrender to the Habs turn out to be duds

It's only a one year deal. And Carolina have tons of cap space. And the draft pick compensation isn't that much really. They're having a laugh. And so am I.

Habs fans are talking about taking the picks now, and then signing him to an offer sheet next year to get back at Carolina.

Wouldn’t the minimum be $6.1 million?

I get the impression if Bergevin lets him go now - JK is likely never to wear the “rouge blanc et bleu” again.

I keep seeing fans of other teams saying similar things about Yzerman being overrated because he's getting high draft picks to rebuild with, and he hasn't accomplished anything in Detroit yet.

Except he has. You could argue that he has won every trade he's made since becoming Red Wings GM, with perhaps the Perlini trade being the exception (although if Regula doesnt pan out, that trade would actually be a win). And the Fabbri, Mantha, and Ned trades especially, were considered big wins by pretty much everybody.

And his draft picks? 6th, 4th, 6th, and 15th. Yeah. Those are gimmes, right?

And it's like they completely forget that the team that just won 2 cups in a row was built by Yzerman.

I dont get the hate.

Most opposing fans/beat writers loath the idea that we'll likely get 'real gud' soon.

Jack Todd: Carolina's offer sheet to Kotkaniemi was a bush-league move

Quote

Let’s get the obvious out of the way first: Carolina’s decision to tender an offer sheet to Jesperi Kotkaniemi for an absurd amount of money was a petty, childish, bush-league move on the part of an organization that simply refuses to grow up.

Bad enough that the Hurricanes chose to act out of revenge — but to accompany that silliness with a bunch of sophomoric tweets and a petulant $20 signing bonus was an embarrassment to the league and the organization.

All in all, the Canes behaved like a bunch of Grade 5 boys trying to see who can stand farthest from the urinal — and not giving a damn who gets splashed in the process.

If Carolina wanted to make its team better, they should have gone after Quinn Hughes. Having lost Dougie Hamilton to New Jersey, they could use a top-flight defenceman. Instead, they chose to throw an absurd amount of money at Kotkaniemi, a very nice young man still trying to get his sea legs in the NHL.

The only ones getting "splashed" here is you, Montreal. The rest of the league don't care. Stay salty.

Fans are so dumb. So then Carolina wouldn't match and they'd get a 1st and 3rd back, but since Montreal is likely going to be a worse team the picks would be better than those Carolina gave up. So basically Montreal would be trading their draft picks for worse draft picks.

My problem is the qualifying offer being $6.1 million next year.

In general I love the move, trolling, drama... this is the type of pot stirring I wanna see in the NHL.

But I can just see Kotka coming out and only scoring 35 pts on the Canes 3rd line next year... and then they don't wanna give him that big qualifying offer at seasons end and he becomes a free agent... if that ends up happening this could be terrible on paper for Carolina. An overpaid 1 year rental in exchange for a 1st rounder and more. If that happens, I do kinda agree with Jack Todd. You shot your team in the toe for what? To piss off Marc Bergevin?

Of course the opposite could happen and he lights it up in Carolina. Or Marc matches and he doesn't do much for the Habs next year.

This has been a fun offseason. 10/10.

True. But no different really than TB or any SC contender trading late 1st rounder to rent a guy like David Savard.

Risky? Yes. For both sides. This is how a true offer sheet scenario should play out IMO.

In the end - f**k the Canes - f**k their retardowner who wants jerseys to look like Nascar - and f**k their fans.

Yes, but try explaining that to Habs fans who already think they know more than you.

I disagree. TB traded for Savard for similar compensation, but they funneled him through Detroit so that we could eat all his cap hit and they could have him for cheap.

The Canes have done the exact opposite in regards to the later. They've overpaid the player by a lot.

IMO, the way an offersheet should be done is the way @marcaractac and I were talking about doing it with Pettersson. Take advantage of a cap crunched team to obtain a good player at a reasonable price.

If you offer sheet Pettersson at $8-10 AAV... it doesn't really matter to the Wings the cap hit, because Pettersson is worth that $8-10 AAV. But you're still putting massive hurt on the Canucks who may be forced to surrender the player, because they're probably trying to bridge Pettersson for cheaper.

Kotka on the other hand is not worth $6.1 AAV today and might never be. There's a reasonable chance here that they get the player, but also burn up like $3 million in cap they could have otherwise had and a 1st just to get back at MB.

It's a risky move by Dundon.

But hey if Kotka get's his crap together down there it could be fun for them.

Kotkaniemi - Aho - Teravainen

I don't care about Carolina's $. And they have the cap space when they LTIR Gardiner. So offer sheeting K is comparable to trading a late first for a rental in draft cost. Of course there's the 3rd to consider. But still....

This is a perfect offer sheet scenario IMO.

A Petterson offer sheet would be an Aho calibre waste of everyone's time. Vancouver would find a way to keep him. I can't believe anyone would seriously buy into the idea that this would work.
