#2248924 1/23 GDT : Blues 1 at Red Wings 3

I didn't say it resulted in the loss, but had that been called, the Wings don't get a PP and may not have went up 3-1. The game would have remained 2-1 with a 4 on 4 coming.
Wings may still have won the game, but that bad non-call allowed for a PPG that kind of put the game out of reach.

Thats assuming the Wings wouldn't have scored on the 4 on 4 or the final wouldn't have been 2-1. I am sure you and other St. Louis fans would have bitched about the other power play goal as well and the call that led to that if you lost 2-1 instead. But I digress.....

The point is this.....

As sports fans, we have endured many moments of yelling at the TV or bitching about what happens in the game because of the refs and what they call and don't call. After playing hockey for 12 years, I decided to put on the stripes and referee. After three years of refereeing, I learned some very valuable lessons in that no one calls a flawless game and calls will always be missed throughout the game. Mistakes are going to happen and refs don't have the luxury of instant replay.

I now spend less time bitching about the reffing when I watch a game. Its more about analysis and understanding why the ref called something.

In the end, the better team wins the game. The calls in the course of the game don't dictate a win or a loss. The puck bounces funny and sometimes, a team will get a one or two goal lead. Its up to the better team to overcome those bounces and win the game. This is why playoff series are played in 7 games. The better team always wins in a 7 game playoff as well.

Levying blame on the refs for the calls as the reason why your team lost really is a cop out IMHO.

Jimmy bails us out again. We looked less than stellar in our own zone, especially in OT. 16 in a row at home, nonetheless

As far as Zetterberg's game misconduct, I've been saying it all along, and I'll say it again, making calls based on the outcome of a play are dangerous, and this is a prime example. Zetterberg doesn't even push him, but because Nikitin violently crashes into the boards, Zetterberg must have pushed him into it. What's Zetterberg supposed to do in a situation like that, let Nikitin get the puck uncontested? Calls like this really make me question the direction the league is headed in terms of discipline. Punish the action, not the result. In this case, there was nothing whatsoever on that play that warranted any kind of penalty. Beyond a horrible call by the officials.

Z had his hand on the players back. Mick and Kenny were both agreeing that it was just a bad situation, but based on the wording of the rule, Z may be suspended for a game or two at the most. In that situation, if Z doesn't want a penalty, he needs his hand OFF the player in front of him. The referee ruled it boarding, and while I don't agree with the call, I think that Z put himself in a situation where the ref had to make that call.

The Wings played average, and yet we still got the win. I am not ok with the Wings effort, but I will take the win. They are going to need to play 2x-3x better to beat St. Louis on Monday or the win streak is going to be over at 16 games.

Yotes always play us hard. This won't be an easy 2 points.

Is it ever an easy two points these days?

Players are getting dumped head first into the boards, that is not checking.

I haven't seen any boarding. I guess I better put my red wings glasses on in order to see it. Hold on.....

Indeedo. You need to be a superhuman like Dominik Hasek in the 90's.

The Buffalo teams back then were much better than the Luongo and Vokoun Florida teams or even the Buffalo team this year. Hasek carried those Buffalo teams the same way he carried the Red Wings teams.....he didn't.

Wow, only 9 pages for the gdt. Nobody has anything to say when all is going well I guess. :hehe:

True story.

Wings dominated tonight and it was good to see at home. I hope to see a road win tomorrow.

I remember a couple years ago (before Howard) was a lot of yacking to try to get Ryan to sign with the Red Wings

Abby you should of got that one!!!

Miller is an elite goalie. This year he is an elite goalie on a crappy team. I don't care how good you are, but an elite goalie on a crappy team doesn't make a crappy team a playoff team. Look at Vokoun and Luongo as examples in Florida.

Miller is being hung out to dry, he's go no help in front of him.

Maybe if the defense wasn't so crappy, then Ryan Miller would have won more games.

Ouch, Jimmy's going to want that one back.

Perfect shot by Vbrata.

That was a snipe. Nothing Jimmy could do except gain about 200 pounds of puck blocking weight so he covers the whole net.

#2244367 Losing: a reoccuring theme

You are right, defense is key, but in previous years the lack of offense is what killed Detroit in the playoffs.

The Wings are in the top tier but they just don't seem that threatening, even when they are winning. You never hear teams or commentators talk about how dangerous the Wings are anymore, or how amazing their game is. We've slipped into the upper end of average it seems like, even though we'll have another 100+ point season. Good enough for the regular season but we need some sort of killer instinct to go far in the playoffs.

Basically, we need to prepare to face San Jose and Boston in the playoffs. I feel like we can handle any other team but facing San Jose is basically a certainty if we can get out of the first round.

People are quick to forget that certain teams owned us in the 90s and solving those teams led to the cup. Remember Colorado in 1995-1997 when they beat us in the playoffs and the regular season? It took the final regular season game in 1997 and a tough playoff series to eliminate the Avs. No team sits on top forever. The Wings will solve the Sharks, and I dare to say that will happen this year. As for that killer instinct, you won't see much of that during the regular season from any team.

Guess I didn't miss much.

If you are talking about the game, no.

If you are talking about the LGW forum members hitting the panic button and laying blame on the lazy forwards, horrible goalie, coach, etc, that is also a no.

Surprised? I'm not. :D

I think people need to temper their expectations a bit. The Islanders are not the worst team in the league or some punk rec league team for that matter. The parity in the NHL really is apparent by the standings. Conklin played well against Chicago, but as normal, the Wings winning or losing will depend on their desire to win the game and some puck luck. Nabokov is no slouch goalie even though he has only one 5 times this season. This is a game the Wings should win, but anyone can win a single game.

I firmly believe the Wings are going to be ready to play tonight and are going to bring it against the Islanders.

I'm glad he has picked things up and in turn upped his trade value. I hope he is used in a trade before Invisible Jiri Hudler takes to the ice in the play offs again.

31 points in 61 playoff games is pretty good for a 2nd/3rd line player.

I guess if Hudler isn't sucking, then no one wants to talk about it. Ah well.

I don't mean to sound like a dick, but why do you pay for an ESPN account? I never got how they can get away with demanding money for that stuff.

I get ESPN the magazine and I get insider for free as part of my subscription. My ESPN Magazine subscription costs me less than $10 for a year.
