That was the greatest Wings team ever assembled, but it was not the greatest team ever assembled.

http://en.wikipedia....anadiens_season

I was not a fan of hockey back then, but just doing the math, Montreal had a much more dominant season and playoffs than the Wings did. They swept 2 of their playoffs series. This Montreal team was so dominant, they still hold the record for most points in a season.

Look at that roster and you will see how they dominated.

#2178647 Brian Rafalski announces retirement after 11 NHL seasons

Posted by Nightfall on 23 May 2011 - 06:18 PM

Keep in mind that Rafalski was 12th in the league in scoring and played only 63 games. Look at his place at the end of the season in total points over the last 5 seasons.

10-11 - 12th
09-10 - 21st
08-09 - 5th
07-08 - 7th
06-07 - 12th

People can knock is defensive game, but he is a point producing machine. I see the same upswing from Brendan Smith as he has the same skillset just in a bigger body.

On a sidenote, I am pretty disgusted with some of the comments here. The "Don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out" comments in specific. He helped bring a Stanley Cup to Detroit. He took a hometown discount to come play here. A little respect would be in order.

Lets be honest here. Rafalski is a elite defenseman in the NHL. If he does decide to retire, that puts the Wings with a BIG hole. It may also influence Lidstrom's decision as well because they will be losing a piece on defense. These things being said, it could have an upside, but I really don't see anyone on the free agent market that is as good or better.

The crop of free agents hitting the market now are not as good as Rafalski. I know that Weber has been mentioned, but Nashville isn't going to let him go. The Wings are not going to sign him because of the loss of all the draft picks he will cost. Brendan Smith isn't ready for the NHL yet. I have seen him in Grand Rapids, and while he is a great defenseman, he needs some help on the defensive part of his game. I think he needs at least another full year in the AHL.

If he does decide to retire, he is going to be missed by the Wings. I know I will never forget meeting him the year he signed with the Wings. I shook his hand at a meet and greet at Van Andel that season ticket holders got to attend. The Wings swung by and did a practice at Van Andel that day and really put on a good show for the fans. What a nice guy.

At the same time though, he has accomplished a lot in his career. Three Stanley Cups and two Olympic silver medals are more than many will have ever accomplished.

That series was one of the best I have seen. Yea, the Wings didn't win in 7, but man they showed a lot of heart. Jimmy Howard played solid all playoffs. I hope that Howards performance will silence his critics for about 3 months. :D

They never surrendered or gave up. I am proud of the Wings effort even though they came up short. Rest up this summer boys. See you guys in September for training camp.

What a disgusting effort by the Wings. The Sharks came to play tonight. The Wings did not.

#2172931 Are we ready for this?

Posted by Nightfall on 12 May 2011 - 09:11 AM

I really think the wings fans have to put this into context.

Every game except game 6, has been a 1 goal affair. Either team could have been up 3-0. A bounce here or there and the Wings could have been up 3-0 on the Sharks. These teams are very very close in terms of skill level. This game 7 will be the same probably. If the Wings win, it will be an epic comeback. If the Wings lose, its going to be a sad day for me because if you are going to make it this far, you have to seal the deal. At the same time though, you gotta have realistic expectations.

If the Wings play hard and lose, I am going to be as proud of the team if they played hard and won. Support your Wings in winning and losing. Thats the key.

No my point is that we say stupid things in the heat of the moment, that's all. Let's just enjoy the win!

Fixed it for you, but I agree either way 100%. It just irritates the hell out of me when I see the lemmings bail and then come back in a hour span.

Quit with the calling out of "band wagon" fans.
People had every right to be furious with the wings for most of the game. I was certain we weren't going to win but I've never been happy to be wrong.Guess I'm a bandwagon fan?

Furious? Hell, I was furious. Furious does not equal bandwagon fan.

Counting their team out and saying that the team is worthless? Thats bandwagon fan talk.

"This game is over."

"Cock teases."

"Cock teases version 2."

"Come on, I told you this s*** was over."

Who would have thunk it. A Red Wings fan forum full of bandwagon fans. When the chips are down, some of these so called fans bail on the team. When the Wings turn it around, they act like they were fans the whole time.

Well I guess that's the game :(

I'd love to eat crow though

Hey lets just support our team til the end. Gotta think they'll win every game until they don't. Lets Go Wings

Where do you think you are? The hfboards? This is letsgowings.com. The majority of "fans" here don't support the team unless they are winning in dominating fashion.

Meh, life goes on.

You have to hand it to San Jose, they are capitalizing on their chances. The Wings put forth a much better effort today, but I don't forgive them for the lack of intensity and hustle in games 1 and 2. The Wings even got the power play in OT and really did nothing with it. I know the refs got a bad rap last year in the playoffs. This year, the Wings have no one to blame but themselves. Especially in games 1 and 2.

I am behind the Wings all the way. Even going to watch Game 4. There was a team last year that won 4 in a row, and maybe the Wings can do that this year. If not, well, there isn't anything that can be done about it by whining or crying. I will put my cheering behind Steve Yzerman and the Tampa Bay Lightning.
