TOR vs. BOS - Series Thread

As an American there's so many things I could say to this In Seattle I actually live in the traditionally Swedish/Norwegian/Danish neighborhood. We have a hospital named Swedish. A Skal beer hall. A swedish cultural club. And a Scandanavian muesum. We dont like Finns either.

Nice! That's pretty much how I feel, and I'm sure many scouts feels the same way. Guess the question is "Do Chicago, Colorado, and LA feel that way?"

    2019 Draft

On a recent podcast, Button said regarding Byram "No question in my mind he's a top pair defenseman, and very well could be, should be... I probably will project him as a number one. I don't project very many defensemen as clear cut number ones, but Bowan Byram is clearly moving in that direction. He controls the game in every single regard; defensively, neutral zone, offense, with the puck, without the puck, skating, shooting"... He then compared his style of play to Scott Niedermeyer... "His ability to command the game in so many different ways, and can play big minutes, effortlessly because his skating is so good and his mind is so free, and he's so smart and so in tuned with what's going on, and a big time competitor. Bowan Byram to me can fit the needs... and I don't know where you find number one defensemen. I don't know where you find them... Bowan Byram to me... I guess I gotta take a stand here, I think he will be a number one defenseman".

That doesnt change anything tho. One D or 5, Holland had the one he was targeting (Hughes). Just like this year (Byram). And the D he wanted was still there at 6. He went Zadina because they felt he was the better player. So if the D he wants is there this year too (Byrem), but a guy like Podholzin is still there, I think he goes F. That is of course if he's that high on Pods, which he may not be. Broberg could be this years Evan Bouchard and slip all the way out the top 10. Doubtful tho because he has less competition at his position vs last year. That said, I dont take him before Byrem or the Finnish kid if I'm going D.

    2019 Draft

Worth point out that Chicago and Colorado are pretty competitive teams right now and LA still has elite talent. Point being: These teams might favor players that they feel are a little closer to being NHL-ready impact players. So maybe I was wrong to say Podkolzin's contract situation -- coupled with the fact that he's a winger -- could be a dealbreaker for multiple teams. If it's between Podkolzin and, say, Turcotte, who's possibly the purest centerman in this draft class and possibly only a year away from making the jump to the NHL...maybe the team picks Turcotte. Defensemen are a crapshoot and they tend to take some time to come into their own and not everyone agrees that Byram is an "elite, elite" player, so there's slide potential there as well.

I really want to check out Broberg. Something is telling me "poor man's Hedman" which is translating to 1B defenseman to me. As good as picking up Hedman or Ekblad? No. But worth trading picks and prospects to get in the draft? Yes.

WTF I love Kucherov now https://twitter.com/JustinWTSP/status/1118932265613045762 EDIT: I hate this stupid website and how sometimes tweets work sometimes and sometimes they just don't. Here's the tweet peasant style: Reporter: "Did you learn anything from your suspension?" Kucherov: "No"

He was, but then he didn't. I dunno if the Flames can come back being down 3-1.
  16. I'll like Larkin, Zegras/Turcotte/Cozens, Veleno, and Glendening more though.

Official 2019 Offseason Rebuild Thread, Pt. 2 - What's the Plan?

    I hate Nielsen's contract, but I do like the depth of: - Larkin - - Athansiou - - Nielsen - - Glendening -
  18. I don't get why so many people think Cholowski needs a full season in Grand Rapids. He was our best defenseman for the better part of the 1st few months last season. He hit a brick wall, and really tailed off after the midway point. It happens. With a full summer of rest and training, and knowing what it takes to play in the NHL, I think he could step into the lineup right out of the gate once again, and be better prepared for the grind of a full NHL season. I agree with Rasmussen, but not necessarily because I don't think he's NHL ready. It's more so because I'd rather see him be a go-to guy and get top line minutes in Grand Rapids, than see him stuck in the bottom six in Detroit. I'm all for trading Nielsen, but maybe not until Veleno proves he's ready to take over a middle six center position in Detroit. I'd really try to trade him after next season, in the summer of 2020. ... which is why I said "IF" Trouba is a UFA after next season... I agree that we shouldn't offer sheet Trouba.

    2019 Draft

There's always a few surprises every draft day...I'm hoping that trend continues, and a few guys ranked 20th to 31st drop back so we can nab them in the 2nd round. Just think...With the # of guys Detroit has picked over the past few years in the top 3 rounds...We could be sitting pretty real soon!
  20. As much as I am for wheelin and dealin, I can agree with these as well. Although I'd give Kronner a 1 yr and buyout Ericsson and Daley, but that's neither here nor there because more than likely either of them will be rotating in and out of the 6th spot. I think Cholowski and Rasmussen both need a full year in GR, but if they have "grown" more by next season, lets give them spots. I'm all for kids playing. With the recent success of The Isles, I'd entertain the idea of asking Nielsen if he'd waive to try and win a Cup next season with them. Valuable spot. But his contract just may keep him here for the life of it. Trouba is an RFA this summer and a UFA after the length of his next contract is over. Seeing his history with The Peg, it'll probably be just 1 year, because I highly doubt they'll give him anything north of $8M, which is probably the range he will be looking for. I say no to offer sheets, they will probably match anything under $6M and I'd hate to give up the compensation for anything above it.

    2019 Draft

So fill the void via trade or free agency. Don't limit yourself to only right-handed players in the draft or you'll end up missing on talent. If it's close, sure, take the righty, if not, always take the best player available. I think Cozens could be available at 6 though, and in my opinion would be the best player available there anyway. Win-Win. But I wouldn't "reach" for Dach, if you think one of the other guys is the more talented player...

    2019 Draft

Normally I would agree with you and say BPA is the way to go. But we are sitting on 100% Lefties as of now. That is part of our scoring/losing problem, even though Holland and a lot of fans dont care to understand it. It is imperative that we address the unbalance.

    2019 Draft

I believe as much as anyone that we need to add some right-handed forwards to the top six, However, you don't base that as the sole criteria when drafting a player, especially that high in the draft. Cozens is at the top of my list because I think he has the highest ceiling of any forward outside of Hughes and Kakko. The fact that he's a right-handed shot is just a bonus, not the sole reason I think we should draft him. I'm not quite as high on Dach, and between him, Zegras, Turcotte, Krebs, Boldy and Podkolzin, it's a toss up for me.
  27. Jonas Mahonas

    2019 Draft

My worst case scenario is V-Pod. He is exactly what we DONT need. Mantha, Zadina, Hirose fill the RW spots on the top 3 lines. Larkin, AA, Veleno fill the Center position and can all be moved to RW if necessary. We have ZERO RIGHT HANDED goal scorers/playmakers to occupy the left side of the ice. We have to come out of this draft with Cozens or Dach. No exceptions.
