  1. I'm okay with this. I don't think he has been as amaze-balls as some here seem to think. I'd like to either sign another guy on a cheap, one year contract, similar to Vanek and hope he exceeds expectations, and flip him at the deadline for pick(s) / prospect(s), or just go full on youth movement. Regardless, Vanek MUST be traded at the deadline to the highest bidder.
  2. Nah, I wouldn't do it unless we can offload both Ericsson and Howard. Otherwise, I'd let another team overpay for him...
  3. I personally wouldn't offer him anything more than what Green is currently making, maybe tack on a couple extra years... $30M over 5 years...
  4. The problem with that is, it would have to be a sign and trade, and those rarely happen. Unless he is under contract beyond this season, I want no part of a trade involving Shattenkirk, and even then, I wouldn't give up too much...
  5. 23 year old stud defensemen don't usually get moved regardless whether they're on a good team or bad team. The thing that might make it a "little" easier acquiring Trouba, is that he has shown in the past that he was unhappy with the organization and his usage, and that Winnipeg may want to move one of Trouba or Meyers before the expansion draft, to allow them to protect two extra players. Although I think it's highly unlikely that Trouba comes to Detroit, I'd say the chance of him being moved (somewhere) in the next year are MUCH higher than Ekman-Larsson or Hamilton...
  6. Why would we give all that up for a pending UFA? Shattenkirk will in all likelihood test free agency. Why not make the two trades you suggested, keep the picks and go after Shattenkirk this summer? If we gave up any assets, let alone any of Larkin, Mantha or Athanasiou for a month of Shattenkirk this place would implode... That's the sort of trade a Cup contender makes, not a team in contention for the number one pick...
  7. I agree that it's unlikely, but what makes you so sure? If it were up to him I think Detroit would be his first choice, being his childhood team and all... Didn't you just say a few days ago that we should go after Ekman-Larsson AND Hamilton?... But going after Trouba is out of the realm of possibility right?
  8. Ideal scenario for me would be to trade Smith to a contender for a 3rd round pick, and let him know that if he wants to come back this summer, and we're able to alleviate the log jam and free up cap space, we will talk then. Work out a deal in the summer with Vegas for them to take Ericsson in the expansion draft. I'm not sure what it would take, maybe a mid round pick would get it done? Ericsson isn't a terrible defenseman, and he will help them reach the cap floor. Kronwall goes on LTIR. We make some sort of trade to bring in that coveted number one defenseman (Trouba). Our defense then looks something like this... DeKeyser - Trouba Smith - Green Ouellet - Sproul / Jensen
  9. To be fair, a lot of us have been very high on Athanasiou for a long time. Even going back to his days in London / Barrie of the OHL. He's a special player for sure, but you still trade him if he can land us a number one defenseman, although I don't believe he alone would get it done. Filling an area of weakness from an area of strength is always a good idea.
  10. I honestly doubt it...
  11. I don't think any player is truly untouchable, but I agree that some should be in the sense that the return likely wouldn't be better than the player we already have. It would take an awful lot for me to want to trade Larkin, Athanasiou and especially Mantha. But if the right deal came along, hell yeah I'd trade them. Athanasiou for Werenski? Yup. If Gretzky can get traded, any player can get traded...
  12. I f***ing love Athanasiou, but if you can trade a guy like that for a legit number one defenseman, you should definitely do it. AA has the "potential" to become a 1C, but he could top out as a 2C. All the guys you listed are 1D. If we were offered Jones or Trouba straight up for Athanasiou, I'd do it without thinking twice... Both are the same age as Athanasiou and both are out producing him from the back end. 34 points (10 goals, 24 assists) in 52 games for Jones, 24 points (5 goals, 19 assists) in 47 games for Trouba, and 20 points (14 goals, 6 assists) in 45 games for Athanasiou. Losing Athanasiou would definitely hurt, but the gain from either of those guys would definitely outweigh the loss of AA in my opinion. Especially if we have the opportunity to draft one of Patrick or Vilardi...
  13. No, DeKeyser, Green, Kronwall and Smith are top 4 based on usage. I'm thinking Smith either stays or we get a 3rd for him. But like I've said, I am okay with moving him at that price. I do use those numbers, and I'll admit to cherry picking stats at times. Everyone does it to support an argument. But the basis of any argument I have on any player, positive or negative comes from watching games. Of course there's bias involved but from watching Smith, I like what he brings to the team. And so do quite a few others. Bias also goes the other way, and for the majority of people that don't like Smith, I think they have a negative perception of him based on the player he was, not the player he is now. Anyway, I'm done with this for now... I think Smith is a very good hockey player. I hope we move Ericsson and keep Smith, but since I know that's not going to happen, I'm okay with trading Smith for the right price.
  14. Fact? What facts? Points? Corsi? No amount of numbers are going to tell the whole story. Just because player X has more points than player Y, does not necessarily make him a better player, nor does it make him more valuable to his team. I believe Smith is a better hockey player and is much more valuable to the Red Wings going forward than Kronwall. You don't. Cool. CRL think Ericsson is better than Smith. Cool. I don't.
  15. Smith is currently being played as a top 4 under Blashill. I care as much about how Smith was used in the past, as I do how much better Kronwall was in the past... Right now, Smith is a top 4 defenseman on this team. I'm not completely opposed to trading him, just like I'm not opposed to trading some of our top 6 forwards, but it has to be to a benefit of the team. As I've already stated, anything less than a 3rd round pick and I don't even consider it... unless Smith makes it very clear that he wants to test free agency, then I'd let him go for a 5th (although he would certainly get more than that).
