I've always liked the guy too.  He made some silly mistakes sometimes, but he was incredibly underrated at getting the puck from the opponent and distributing it to our boys.  Sometimes its was pretty incredible what he did under pressure, to be honest.

Keeping track of former Wings going into the playoffs, since we won't have a playoff team this year and there's nothing else to do.

Eaves: 5 pts in 10gp with the Ducks (2nd/3rd line duties)
Pulkkinen: 1 pt in 4gp with the Yotes (4th line duties and often a healthy scratch)
Nestrasil: went back to the AHL
Jurco: 0 pts in 9gp with the Hawks (very few minutes and has been a healthy scratch)
Tootoo: 2 pts in 44gp with the Hawks (4th line duties and often a healthy scratch)
Hudler: 11 pts in 31gp with the Stars (4th line duties and often a healthy scratch)
    Backman: AHL
Janmark: went back to the AHL
Kindl: 4 pts in 32gp with the Cats (-12) (7 spot so often a healthy scratch)
Vanek: 7 pts in 10gp with the Cats (-9) (3rd line duties)
Quincey: 0 pts in 9gp with the Jackets (playing the 6 spot)
Smith: 2 pts in 10gp with the Rags (+4) (playing the 2 spot)
Filppula: 3 pts in 10gp with the Flyers (-5) (2nd line duties)
Ott: 1 pt in 7gp with the Habs (4th line duties and has been a healthy scratch)
Marchenko: 2 pts in 9gp with the Leafs (7 spot so often a healthy scratch)
Jarnkrok: 28 pts in 72gp with the Preds (3rd line duties)

    Did I forget anyone?

The only former Wings that seem relevant this year are Smith, Eaves, Vanek, and Jarnkrok. Shows how much junk we've had on this team.

Jarnkrok appears to be emerging as a serviceable 3rd line center
Vanek is clearly a 3rd line offensive specialist at this point (I am guilty of overhyping him while he was here)
Eaves has worked his butt off and seems like a legit top 6 forward
Not sold on Smith as a true top pairing yet, but granted I haven't seen him play with the Rags yet.
I thought Fil would be doing better as Philly's 2nd line center. Will be interesting to see if he pans out there.

So with these wins and OT losses lately, the Wings keep getting further away from that top 5 pick. There are now 5 teams behind the Wings in points and 2 who are one point and two points ahead.
    COL-43
    ARI-63
    NJ-66
    VAN-69
    DAL-71
    *DET-72
    WIN-73
    BUF-74
I get that they can't just lay down and die in front of opponents, but they've pretty much been doin that all season, so why start playing your best hockey of the season in your final 15 games with a top 5 pick on the line? This team is so screwed.

    So.
Devils beat the Flyers. This is good. Jets beat the Islanders. This is good. Hurricanes beat the Wild. This is good. Stars are currently playing the Canucks. This is good. (Ideally, it's a three-point game.) https://www.nhl.com/standings
I'm kind of enjoying this whole draft positioning thing. Sweet dreams are made of these...

We played well (at least by our standards) and they played not so well (at least by their standards). The Tatar-Zetterberg-Nyquist line was beastly. Howard was solid. The DeKeyser-Green pairing was poop, but Jensen looked really good overall and Ouellet scored.

corsi is just a more sensitive +/-  It has its merits as long as people are aware of the limitations, the problem is most people aren't aware and use it as a holy grail of statistical evidence that player A is superior to player B.  Having said that, I prefer judging players based on quantitative evidence over the eyeball test whenever possible.

I don't think you understand my post, based on what you just said. I agree that advanced stats are quantitative.  I never suggested otherwise.

Its been difficult to watch these lately.  Mentally, I know there's no chance of making the playoffs at this point, and it would be for the best long-term if the Wings get as close to 1st overall pick as opposed to 14th overall... but my heart still hates seeing the Wings lose.

Ooo.. bad argument. Generalizing dick moves made by people doesn't justify the said move made by Datsyuk. All it does is clump him into the dick move category along with the rest. I don't think anyone appreciates people leaving in the middle of their contract obligations in any field of work. And more often than not those people are banned from being re-hired. Just a bad way to end things.

I like it. I want to see what Robbie can do in the majors. Our defense flat out sucks and we are not making the playoffs. I say give him plenty of games, let's see where he's at.
