All in all not bad for a year when we didn't have a 2nd rounder.
Most of them seem to exceed the potential of the players picked after them.  Heck, even many before them.  You're not going to hit on every pick and you have to expect other teams are going to hit on players as well.

I disagree somewhat.  It's hard to build chemistry with 20 players who've never played together before.  Salary cap or not, that's just not supposed to happen so easily.  Their ability to come together as a team has been impressive.

    No.
What has turned this franchise into what it is is having sustained long term success in a league designed to prevent it. Implementation of a salary cap without even a luxury tax preventing signing of meaningful free agents, and then overpaying pending ones. Going long periods of time without high end draft picks, and missing on the lower ones that were awarded based on the way the draft is set up (punishing success, rewarding failure). No longer having the best scouting staff and pulling gems out of later rounds. Being incredibly unlucky in drafting defenseman and getting duds (Kindl, Smith), as well as fluke injuries/medical issues regarding defensemen who were actually very good (Vladi, Fischer, Kronwall).
This team would not be any better today bringing up any of its past prospects sooner than it did. Blaming this team's current state of affairs on how it has handled its prospects in the past is quite irrelevant IMO. It's like that person you work with who blames all of their problems on whoever the President is. In reality, this has very little to do with their personal issues, but they don't like him, so he's a convenient scapegoat.
In summary, this team's issues are multifaceted (as mentioned above). It's handling of prospects has never been one of them that i can recall. But it's easy to blame our downfall on that perception for those that didn't agree with it. It's just human nature I suppose.

Can't pass the Islanders, as they'd win the ROW tiebreaker no matter what.
The Blackhawks won tonight, so now we can't pass them either, because they'd win the ROW tiebreaker no matter what.
If the Oilers get two more points, we won't be able to pass them, because they'd win the ROW tiebreaker no matter what.
    So, we can finish 29th / 3rd-worst, 28th / 4th-worst, 27th / 5th-worst, 26th / 6th-worst (our current position), or 25th / 7th-worst (the Oilers' current position). (This, of course, doesn't factor in the potential 1-3-position slide in the final lottery order.)
We're currently three points away from the 29th / 3rd-worst Habs. They have two games left: one against us and one against the Leafs.
We're currently three points away from the 28th / 4th-worst Coyotes. They have two games left: Canucks and Ducks.
We're currently two points away from the 27th / 5th-worst Canucks, and they'd win the ROW tiebreaker no matter what. They have two games left: Coyotes and Oilers.
    Should be an interesting finish.

Not 4 years (or 5-6). 2-3 years or 7-8. Though I would expect Larkin (or his agent at least) to push for 4-6. 3 years he would still be RFA at the end. While I wouldn't expect that to lower the hit of his next deal too much, it would at least eliminate most of the risk of losing him. 4+ and he would be unrestricted. 4-6 years he would still be young enough to look for a big deal if things weren't going well with our rebuild.
If you could get 7 or 8 years at $6M or less, I think it'd be worth it. It's some risk to be sure, but I don't think that's that much more than what he'd get for 3 years. And depending on what we do with the cap in those years, there some risk in the bridge deal as well.
And we wouldn't give him another max term deal unless he earned it, especially not one for "a lot more money". Sure, if he plays like Zetterberg over the next 8 years we would, as we would if he plays like that until he's 32-33. But if he ends up more of a Filppula/Tatar level, we'll let him go or trade him.

And in case anyone wants to be further confused:
Mantha and AA are basically the same age, both signed their ELCs in the same year, both need 4 years pro for arbitration, both started in GR the same year, both got their first call-up to the Wings in the same year, and for the most part been full-time for the last two. So why is AA eligible while Mantha is not? Because Mantha was born after after September 15th, the NHL considers him a year younger rather than just over a month. So he was considered 19 for his first year in GR, while AA was considered 20. 19 year olds need 10 NHL games to count as a season.
So there you go. Half the battle is over, if you believe anything Flint has to say.

As I've said I think Holland will be smart enough to get all three in bridge deals. However do I think we could gamble and possibly win on a 6x8 type contract with Larkin? Yeah I do and I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility.

Except that deal was signed 5 years ago. Judging for market inflation he would have received 7.5-8m today. Making Larkin's 6x8 deal seem quite reasonable.
    For every Nugent-Hopkins there's a Nathan MacKinnon.
Anyways here's hoping for 3 bridge deals but I wouldn't be surprised to see Larkin sign long-term.

What do Nyquist and Tatar have to do with anything? Larkin is a potential #1 center. They were undersized potential top 6 wingers. The HYPE isn't even close to comparable.
If you want to lock in a player of Larkin's caliber for 8 years you have to pay. Obviously theres risk in that. It's a gamble for both sides.
    It's all about recent comparables.

At minimum Larkin is going to get Bo Horvat money.
    $5.5m x 6
No way his agent settles for less unless they're doing a bridge deal.
$6m x 8 sounds alot more realistic. It's always more than you think when it's a long-term deal for a key young player.

Not directed at Datsyukian Deke, but it seems some things (this being one of them) have to be repeated over and over and over again, and it still doesn't sink in with some people...

Come on... The difference between RFA and UFA contracts has been explained time and time again. They're not comparable.

...among defencemen.  Not overall. Not to mention he's played half the games as most.
Small sample size, but nonetheless encouraging.
Also have to remember he turns 24 in a couple months.  Guys like Hieskanen and Juolevi are 18 and 19.

Son of a Wing reacted to krsmith17 in Corey Pronman - Top 50 NHL Prospects
For sure. I didn't expect anyone to take this list to mean much of anything really. It's just one man's opinion. It is interesting to see outsiders opinions of the organization and our players / prospects though. It sucks that not a single Wings prospect made his top 50 list, but as I alluded to in the original post, take it for what it's worth (not a whole lot)...
I don't think it's what Vilardi has done this year, but more of his body of work over the past couple seasons. I still would have preferred to have taken him over Rasmussen, but I'm all aboard the Big Ras hype train now. I hope he surprises everyone, including Corey Pronman and becomes a Ryan Getzlaf type of beast centerman.

I actually wasn't nitpicking at all here....difference between 19.6 years old and 18 years old is massive.
Go look at a bunch of players that played in junior for 3 or years and check their production difference from 18 to 19 years old.  I'd be you'll see a lot increase production 50+ % in that one year and the difference we are talking about is closer to 2 years than it is to 1.
I've seen it, over and over and over again.  The quick and easy example is Mantha...at 18 he scored 89 points in 67 games, at 19, he scored 120 points in 57 games.....increased his production by 59%.
I'm not saying it's always like this, but it's quite ordinary.  It's hard to do this by looking at the good NHL players because most of them never play in junior by the time they are 19.  The best of the best are in the NHL a year earlier, the good players may stay back a year in junior, but for the most part, it's rare to play in junior 2 years after draft age for guys that ultimately become NHL stars.

"But the simple fact is Quenneville believed that Jordan Oesterle, Connor Murphy, Michal Kempny, Gustav Forsling and Jan Rutta (who carry a combined cap hit of $7.195 million) have played better than Seabrook (who has a cap hit of $6.875 million, with six more years left on that contract)."

What are you talking about?  Are you at all familiar with the WHL or CHL in general?  You make it seem like he's a young guy playing against older players for the most part.  It's actually the exact opposite.
Firstly, he'll be 20 in a month, so suggesting he's a 19 year is accurate, but misleading.  Secondly, suggesting he's playing against 20 and 21 year olds is completely false.  There is not a single 21 year old in the league, because the age cut of is 20.  Not only that, each team is limited to only three 20 year olds.  15 year olds can play in the league (for up to 5 games anyway).
He's a guy that will be 20 next month and playing against mostly 17 and 18 year olds.  Average age in the league is right around 18.
I always discount performance in junior from guys who are 19 and 20 years olds.
