Hell, with the exception of Saban, MSU has been a death trap for coaches since long before that.

Since 1954, when Duffy Daugherty took over, MSU has had 9 head coaches. 7 of them have been fired. 2 quit for better jobs.

Not a bad percentage. Most coaches end up getting fired. Nature of the job. MSU really is a good place for a coach right now. Low expectations, lots of room for improvement, and a state with plenty of talent to recruit from. And the conference has plenty of very beatable teams, so MSU has as good a shot as anyone of going to a bowl game next year.

Actually the State of Michigan is usually not a real hot bed for high school talent (except this year with Johnson, Grady, Nichol, Barksdale, ect) The state that is key is for sure Ohio. There is enough talent in Ohio every year for several Big 10 teams plus ND to grab key players. OSU does a very good job though of protecting their turf.

I'm not sure of Harmon...but Michigan's last two Heisman winners (Howard and Woodson) were from Ohio. I think Woodson and Rob Lytle came from the same high school.

Kind of says something about OSU that there are always Ohio natives that go to Michigan but rarely if ever does a Michigan native bother with Ohio State ;)

Actually, I think the reasons are obvious: Michigan has two choices of big-time programs, Ohio has one, so Ohio State gets saturated with local talent. Plus, a very common thread among Ohio natives in maize and blue is that they go to Michigan to rebel against everyone who assumes they'll go to OSU. Anyone wanting to rebel like that against Michigan goes to MSU instead.

Zoltan Mesko is the cousin of one of my friends here at OSU. Said he went to Michigan because they said he had a chance of punting for them right away. He ended up having to wait a year but still quicker than he would have gotten a chance at OSU.

Yeah thats true, because he says he grew up a HUGE OSU fan. He had to redshirt because he struggled getting the ball in the air quick enough. I think he was smart taking the RS now that you look back at it.

Why U-M should still be No.2:

Against Notre Dame:

UM scored 47 points, USC 44.

UM gave up 21 points, USC 24.

UM outgained Notre Dame by 95 yards (368-273).

USC did not outgain Notre Dame (404-404)

Now...if we take the percentage of UM's numbers against Notre Dame that USC put up, and apply that percentage to the OSU game as a prediction of a OCU/USC matchup...

USC will lose by a score of 48-37.

USC will gain 436 yards, and give up 744.

Somehow, I don't think that sounds like USC is the right choice for the title game.

I know we beat ND more then USC, but if USC wins out they deserve to play..not us. If they lose next weekend I think we should be in over FLA.

I'd agree with that. I just think it should be that way because Michigan already had their chance, but then I contradict myself by saying Michigan is definitely the second best team in the nation...so whatever happens, happens.

Are you serious? You're gonna take one game like this and overanalyze it? By the logic you're applying here i guess we can throw Boise St at #2...since they beat Oregon St! The Broncos are getting robbed!!!!

What happens if U-M dominates their bowl game, and USC barley beats OSU?? Whos the champ??

Of course it would be USC. Pretty simple: USC>OSU>UM

That's how I feel - I still believe Michigan deserves to be/and is the #2 team, but USC should play OSU. The contradiction is with the BCS - they can't have UM be #2, but not play OSU - another reason the BCS sucks. I'm wondering what they would do if Texas was #2 - would they allow a rematch? They need to address the "rematch" thing.

Incidently, I see no way UM plays ND in a rematch in the Rose Bowl. Esp since it wasn't a close game the first time, and we play them early next year anyhow. ND can try to make a case for itself since its losses were to the #2 and #3 teams, albeit in blowouts.

Michigan is better off playing Florida or LSU. I forsee OSU beating USC pretty handily - Pete Carroll is a great coach, but I just don't think they match the talent of OSU this year. Here's my dilemna: if OSU beats USC, and UM wins their bowl game, who winds up #2 in the polls? I fear they would keep USC at #2 regardless.

Here's something that makes me really hate the BCS even more: the NC Bowl game is on Monday January 8th!:huh::unsure: wtf? They should have to play ALL bowl games by the end of New Years week/weekend. I think it's BS for the fans too - is OSU back in school by then?

The whole bowl system took a huge nosedive this year. You know what the last bowl being played before the title game is? The GMAC Bowl. In Mobile. So much for the idea of the prestigious bowls being on New Year's - or even during the New Year. The Peach Bowl, which was a perfectly good bowl, is now the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. All kinds of ridiculousness.

Oh yeah, we have class that day....I'm sure "football game" will be an acceptable excuse for my professors with required attendance too. /sarcasm

Not that it isn't already hard for college students to go to bowl games, but it would be much easier on New Years weekend before the University starts again. Not to mention anyone with kids who are back in school by then. It just tells you how far the BCS is removed from what bowl games are supposed to be about. I went to a bowl game every year I was in college - twice for UM, twice for MSU (yes they actually went to bowl games - tells you how old I am - lol). Mostly is was just to get the f*&^ out of Michigan in the winter.

Yeah, it's getting pretty ridiculous how late the bowl games are. The latest bowl game should be Jan 1st.

"Too late" is just a symptom of "too many". Cut the games to 15 plus a championship game, require 7 wins instead of 6 to qualify (or win your conference) and finally, require that bowl games not be named after the sponsor (i.e., I want the Peach Bowl, Citrus Bowl, Copper Bowl, and Hall of Fame Bowl back). The NCAA is a giant money-grubbing blob, I'm sure they, the conferences, and the schools can find creative ways to make up the lost cash from cutting down on the bowls.
