i was just thinking after yzerman had his jersey retired who would you guys say are gonna have their jerseys retired by the wings one day ???

lidstrom without a shadow of a doubt

after him i say brendan shanahan and sergei fedorov deserve to have their jerseys retired , both were HUGE contributers to the wings winning their 3 cups

after that i "might" consider kris draper for being a big part of the grind line and penalty killing unit , and he won the selke, thats about all i can think , anyone else you think should have their jerseys retired ? do you agree or disagree with who i said ??

if hasek helps us win the cup this year would you guys consider him even though he's barely been here ? what about chelios ?

anyways , any thoughts ?

Draper and Chelly? What are we, the Avalanche?

Lidstrom is a lock to have his number retired. Had Fedorov stayed with the Wings, I think he would be as well. But since he left, it won't happen.

As far as everyone else, sorry. Thanks for playing, we appreciate all the help you gave us. We had some good times. But only the best of the best hang in the rafters at The Joe (or wherever the Wings move to in several years ;))

Agreed. Lidstrom's a lock. And Federov would have been as well, if he stayed, but I don't see anyone else' going up. Provided he stays in Detroit, and plays with the same intensity he does now, Zetterberg, but even that is way to early to tell. Everyone else, I would say no to, or it's too early to tell.

other than lids, the only one i would love to see would be shanahan because he does deserve it. but feds would be good as well. imagine having the glory years in a nutshell looking up at the rafters and seeing 5, 19, 91, and 14. thats all anyone would have to say. that would be fantasmic

Did I miss something, or is it now mandatory that we discuss this every few weeks?

I am sure if you wanted to search the site, you would find about 15-20 threads that discuss this issue (okay, maybe I am underestimating...)

never gave much thought to Drapes before, I still think he'd need another Selke season or something like that to get there.

Cheli - I doubt that very much

Lids is a lock

You mean you don't love rehashing the same argument every few weeks? I question whether you really like LGW at all then ;)

I've said it before: The only players whose jerseys should be retired are those who there is NO DOUBT in ANYONE's mind that they deserve the honor.

If you have to say "might", or "could", or "what do you think about so and so?" then the answer is a clear, resounding, NO! If there's debate, if some people don't agree that a number should be retired, then in my opinion, that is enough to say no.

It should be strikingly obvious several years before the player retires that his number will go up. Lidstrom is the only one who fits this category. Not Shanny, not Fedorov, not Cheli, and most definitely not Draper. Not retiring a number is no slight to a player. It's easier to get into the Hall of Fame then have your number retired, which is as it should be.

Lidstrom... well I guess everyone knows by now

Chelly I doubt, he should get his jersey retired, but here is not the place.

Drapes, never really thought about it, but even him... no. I don't see him as a "major" contribute to the Stanlely Cups. What has he done really? I mean he is a good role model, and excellent pk specialist, but good enough for the banners? No.

Shanahan, maybe but doubt it. If anyone gets his number retired, besideds Lids, I woudl say its him.

Feds, as mentioned before, would have gotten it no doubt.

So how I see it, only Lidstrom should get it.

This is becoming the new "Who will be the next captain?" topic. A new one pops up every week. The concensus is that Lidstrom is the only player who will have his number retired for sure. Had Fedorov stayed he would've had his retired too. No one else really comes close, other than Shanahan, whose number wont be retired here.

By the way, wingsrule_s_, are you wingsfan_27? Your posts are extremely alike.

Consider that Yzerman's jersey was the first to be retired in decades. Only VERY special players to a franchise gain the distinction of a retired jersey.

Yzerman was the face of the Red Wings for over 20 years. Lidstrom, having been one of the best D-men in the history of the NHL, always on the Wings, and the captain for who knows how long, will probably have his number retired as well, provided that he doesn't do something like leave the team before he retires.

Shanahan? 9 years here. He left for the Rangers voluntarily, and for the same salary. He was a good player, but nobody essential.

Fedorov? He left the team on TERRIBLE terms.

Draper? Yes, he's been around forever. So has Maltby. So has Osgood. They're clearly big parts of the franchise. Are they incredible players? No--they're loyal, but they're not greats. No jersey retirement for them.

Hasek? No way. 2.5 years here? Sure, he has played very well throughout much of those, but he hasn't been a face of the franchise. If his jersey were retired anywhere, it'd be Buffalo-- he made that team.

Chelios? He wasn't a great when he played here. If he'd played out his whole career in Montreal, he would've had his jersey retired there.

Jersey retirement is a VERY special thing.

i thought cheli said that if his jersey does get reitred he would want it by the blackhawks

Montreal, Chicago and Detroit could retire if they wanted...

never gave much thought to Drapes before, I still think he'd need another Selke season or something like that to get there.

Why on God's green earth is Draper even discussed in this topic?

Considering that Wings fans hate Fedorov, I don't think they'd appreciate seeing his number in the rafters every time they visit the arena. Fedorov is generally booed whenever he touches the puck in the Joe. Shanahan, when he comes, will be met with ambivalence.

Yzerman? Everybody loved him. Lidstrom? WELL respected. Guys like Hull, etc? Makers of a franchise, and also well-liked. One won't get his jersey retired in a city if that city hates him.

Not retiring a number is no slight to a player. It's easier to get into the Hall of Fame then have your number retired, which is as it should be.

I like how you said that-- very well put.

Just for some relative perspective here, the Wings have been around for what, 75 years?

And they have how many jerseys retired from those years?

I think it's six now with Yzerman. And Vladdie's and Aurie's as unofficial retirings.

Think about that. 6 jerseys over 75 years.

There have been a lot of great players in the organization over those years who have made major contributions to the team. But you only retire the best of the best. Players you absolutely identify with greatness, and with the Red Wings.

(unless you're Colorado, then playing one season on your team qualifies)

Draper's number will not be retired. Chelios's number will not be retired. Shanny's number won't be retired. Fedorov's won't either, unless he came back to Detroit and was a major part of another Cup.

Lids is the only one you can seriously talk about right now.

EDIT: And before I get crucified for that statement about Fedorov, that's my way of saying it ain't gonna happen. Because the chance of him coming back to Detroit and playing out of his mind to win a Cup is extremely extremely small.

players come and go , what according to you only players who play their whole career for the wings can have their numbers retired ?? fedorov and shanahan were HUGE contributers with the wings , fedorov had 953 pts as a wing , won the hart , 2 selke's had some great games for us in the playoffs during the avs - wings rivalry

shanahan was a wing for 9 yrs and had 336 regular season goals and helped us win 3 cups

what does a player have to do to have their numberes retired ?

 Lids will have his retired and rightfully so. As BlakChamber said Feds would have if he had stayed on. Shanahan could have his retired. He probably wont but he is the only other guy I could see.
