Guest Crymson Report post Posted February 27, 2007 (edited) On the TSN TradeCentre show... No word on the TSN site either. I think the deal might have run into a hitch of some sort. EDIT: scratch that. It DOES say it on the TSN site, but it only says "confirmed by a source." Edited February 27, 2007 by Crymson

Sting 11 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2007 Smyth's agent just said on TSN that it was realized that Smyth wouldn't resign at 2:40. So the trade talks appear to only have gotten serious with 20 minutes left to play. With that knowledge on top of the reports of the GM's shock in regards to Smyth's availability...can we now all agree that the Wings had no chance here?? No word on the TSN site either. I think the deal might have run into a hitch of some sort. EDIT: scratch that. It DOES say it on the TSN site, but it only says "confirmed by a source." Confirmed by Smyth's agent. edicius 3,269 Report post Posted February 27, 2007 I'm sorry, but I have to laugh at Edmonton now. MacT's gonna have a whole lot more to whine about now.

wingfanatic4alltime 32 Report post Posted February 27, 2007 I'm shocked i thought Smyth reupped with the oilers but i guess not. Poor oiler fans
grsbmd 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2007 The guys on TSN are treating this like it's the watergate scandal or something. "We are now receiving reports that Brian Burke was never contacted about Ryan Smyth" It was 20 minutes to go and he still had to work out a deal. He can't call 29 GMs.
North Guy 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2007 (edited) Even if the Oilers were to make the playoffs this year (highly unlikely), they were not going to duplicate what they did last playoffs. In other words they would have gotten killed by Nashville in the 1st Round. At first I was disappointed when I heard the news but since the Oilers did not want to sign Smyth at Havlat type of money they might as well get something in return for him instead of let him walk as a free agent in the summer. Now the Oilers have a ton of prospects and high draft picks (three 1st Round picks for 2007). They are going to make some major deals in the off-season. Just watch. p.s........For alll of you Wings fans disappointed that Detroit did not get a crack to obtain Smyth, just be happy he got traded to an Eastern Conference team. Statts 4 Report post Posted February 27, 2007 Craig MacWhiner is gonna complain to the league about these bad Wings who did this. mark my words! I can't resist to laugh at Oilers. bunch of crybabies who'll dwell at league bottom now :D Yes!, Oh let me taste your tears Oilers... mmm, your tears are so yummy and sweet! statboy 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2007 Pretty sure Edmonton didn't want to deal with somebody in the Western conference, and with so little time, I'd say they did alright. If Smyth winds up back in Edmonton next year, this will look like a steal for the Oilers...

RyanBarnes! 293 Report post Posted February 27, 2007 The Islanders paid a steep price, but they got a true character player in return, something they've been lacking.

Yo North Guy, what's the mood like in Edmonton right now? I couldn't even imagine. It would be like us trading away Yzerman.

HenrikRules40 14 Report post Posted February 27, 2007 Edmonton! Honestly, I think this was the most shocking move today. Wow! Thank God I'm not an Oilers fan. Way to detract from Messier night eh?
Jocu 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2007 It's going to be rather awkward for Mess when they're raising his number, and everyone in the crowd is talking about Smyth.
North Guy 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2007 Yo North Guy, what's the mood like in Edmonton right now? I couldn't even imagine. It would be like us trading away Yzerman. The knowledgable fans understood Kevin Lowe was in a tight spot with Smyth's demands. Like myself, they are disappointed but we all have to look at the big picture. The bandwagon, casual fans (ie. the dummies who rioted during last year's playoffs) are the ones that are angry with the Oilers. By the way, Ryan Smyth has great heart but you cannot compare his impact like Yzerman's. More like Edmonton trading Gretzky in 1988 would feel the same as Detroit trading Yzerman in his prime. Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted February 28, 2007 Whoever doubts Garth Snow now should be shot. Look at the deal he made here. He only gives up one draft pick and two prospects for one of the best players in the league. Kudos Garth Snow. Watch out for the Islanders now. If they can now get a healthy and decent playing Yashin, they will be extremely deadly.

Wow you're taking this very well. I can't help but think that you guys are so used to this that it doesn't even register. If Zetterberg was traded in the same situation, there would be a revolt in this town.
sixer 37 Report post Posted February 28, 2007 I'd rather have Bertuzzi then give up so much for a guy who's a free agent in a couple months. Bad trade for Islanders since they don't stand chance in playoffs even with him and for the fact Smyth would never stay in NY. He'll re-sign with Edmonton next year, lol. superstarsingh 23 Report post Posted February 28, 2007 Has any fan base ever been as tourtured as Edmonton's? Every great player they've ever had has been traded before there prime was up (Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, Pronger, Weight, Guerin, and now Smyth). I We can add Comrie to that list even though he was greedy.
