betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted December 6, 2007 Just think: Two years ago at this time, the Tigers still had not had a winning season since 1993 and were only two years removed from a historically awful run. Now they have a pennant under their belt and are being described as a superpower, a label that's been pretty much reserved for just two teams. I still haven't gotten used to the Tigers being a team that everyone is chasing.
timothy1997 0 Report post Posted December 6, 2007 (edited) Article Turns out this deal might not have been done without the help of Ilitch. I love this part of the story. "I haven't received a call (about player personnel) from Mr. Ilitch in about six years," said Dombrowski, who said that the Tigers had no contact with the Marlins this offseason until Monday night. "I thought we were done (this offseason). "We re-signed Todd Jones and Kenny Rogers for our pitching staff, and brought in (shortstop) Edgar (Renteria) and Jacque Jones. Third base was never on our radar screen." Edited December 6, 2007 by timothy1997
dallas27 7 Report post Posted December 6, 2007 You don't want Cabera to replace Inge and you don't want Willis replacing Miller, but you WANT Beltran replacing Granderson. I don't get it. Beltran and Granderson are both great centerfielders. You take away some of that outfield abilities if you ask them to play left or right instead. I was joking... betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted December 6, 2007 You know, DD deserves mountains and mountains of credit for the Tigers, as does Jim Leyland. It really does start with Ilitch though. For years he was criticized because the Tigers were bad and he wasn't really doing much about it. Turns out the criticism was justified, because it seems like he woke up one day, decided, "I want a good baseball team," and made it happen. Just like that. I think some of it has to do with the NHL Salary Cap. Ilitch spends at least 20 million a year less on Wings salary while still raking in top dough from the 18000 sold tickets per game. That extra money is now going to the Tigers.

I was just going to say that. I agree. Ilitch treated the Wings like the Yankees before the cap started. Now with the cap he treats the Tigers like he used to treat the Wings. Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted December 7, 2007 Tigers not done yet... Trade Shelton to Texas for OF Freddy Guzman http://freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID...ORTS02/71205087 And thus ends the era of Big Red. On a side note, i think we should consider changing our name to Los Tigres.

Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted December 7, 2007 Wow opposing teams will have to pick their poision this year. Unfortunately it'll be sad to see Inge go in a likely trade. Are there any good closers available we can trade Inge for. It wont matter how many runs we put up if Todd the rollercoaster gives up runs. Look me in the eye and tell me your comfortable with a 1 run lead in the 9th in game 7 of the ALDS with Jones on the mound. That wont happen. We're not going to get a closer for Inge, at least not anyone who's better than Jones. Unfortunately because of his 6 mill salary, and the fact most teams inquiring want the Tigers to eat a portion of that (which they said they wont do), the return is not going to be that good. But i'll take any kind of middle relief upgrade we can get. We'll probably get a mid 3 era kinda guy. SF and the Dodgers were mentioned as potential suitors. BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted December 7, 2007 ^^^ Exactly. Between Inge's low BA and salary the Tigers aren't going to get a whole lot in return. I'd be happy too with any kind of middle relief. I do like Inge though. And he's one of 5 remaining guys from the 2003 team. I'd like to see him stay, I just don't think there's a place for him now.
rwfan007 18 Report post Posted December 7, 2007 Inge is like Draper, he is one of the longest tenured players on this team, he is amazing defensively, he may not put up huge offensive numbers, but he is the epitome of hard work and is the heart and soul of this team. He is my all time favorite player, and wherever he goes, I will be watching that team closely to see how he does. His glove is Gold Glove caliber and he should thrive wherever he goes. Yzerfan1999 81 Report post Posted December 7, 2007 Pitching edge probably goes to the Sox but lineup top to bottom clearly goes to the Tigers. I'd even give the pitching to the Sox without Santana, and as good as the Tigers lineup looks on paper - i'll wait till the season starts to see how it goes. Which 3 4 5 hitters would you rather have? Ortiz-Ramirez-Lowell or Ordonez-Cabrera-Sheffield That could make for a good debate. Check this out Detroit's 345 hitters last year AB 1677 AVG .316 HR 87 RBI 333 Boston's 345 hitters last year AB 1621 AVG .317 HR 76 RBI 325 pretty close huh? So who would you rather have? P.S. I know there are some things to consider - Ordonez hit above his avg. last year...Sheff still has a bad shoulder...Cabrara wasn't even on the team. Ortiz hit below his usual power numbers due to a bad knee, Ramirez spent the last 2 months on the DL, Lowell hit above average... But I think its interesting to ponder. But you are right top to bottom the Tigers have the better lineup..on paper. That wont happen. We're not going to get a closer for Inge, at least not anyone who's better than Jones. Pudge, although his offensive output has slowed down a ton, is now the worst hitter. They are going to approach 1000+ runs this year.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted December 7, 2007 (edited) Why not Eric Gagne? Gagne is going to want to close somewhere im guessing. Removing Jones from that role in turn makes him useless...as he's always been horrid when coming into games in non- save situations. Jones can not be a set up guy. But if Gagne wanted to be in a Zumaya 8th inning type role, and closer if need be, i'd definitely be for it over Hawkins or anybody else. At least with Gagne theres a possibility he could become dominant and a go to stopper like Joel was, whereas someone like Hawkins he's pretty much going to be another Rodney. Good at times, horrible on other occasions. Edited December 7, 2007 by Lou_Siffer

Guest DetroitIan Report post Posted December 10, 2007 Inge wants out! Article Peace out Inge. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. He can take his .238 average and disappear. I'll stick with the guy who has defense AND offense in his game(Cabrera).
rwfan007 18 Report post Posted December 10, 2007 (edited) dude, chill out, he had an off year... All-Star CF Andruw Jones hadn't hit below .250 since '97 and hit only .222 last season. Inge is a fantastic player, and when his bat gets to where it can be you can pencil him in for 20-30 homers and 70-80 RBI, oh yeah, he was our 9-hole hitter too and still got 70 RBIS. Inge had 3 straight years over .253 and just slipped up last year Edited December 10, 2007 by rwfan007

I'll stick with the guy who has defense AND offense in his game(Cabrera). Don't kid yourself. Cabrera has one of the worst gloves in either league. He has the range of an oak tree. It's really obnoxious, this hangup on Inge that you have. For god's sake shut it. Inge is one of the hardest-working guys in the game and has one of the best attitudes, too. What did he do, step on your puppy? .236 (in ONE season - remember hit .253 in '06 and .261 in '05) can't be the only reason you hate him. Out with it, why are you so irrational about Brandon Inge? I wish we could keep him, why does he want to leave So he can start. Oh, and you can't trade draft picks in baseball. Best guess: A middle reliever with a pulse and a B-level prospect is what we'll get.
