NASHVILLE - Chris Chelios wasn’t slated to go to Nashville, but a possible injury on defense prompted a change of heart after Sunday’s game against Carolina.

Mike Babcock told Chelios to make the trip, but as of the morning skate, it hadn’t been decided whether Chelios would play or not tonight when the Red Wings face Nashville.

“We’re a little bumped on the back end, so we’ll see,†Babcock said after an optional skate at Sommet Center. “We’ll see who is eligible and who’s not. Originally I wasn’t bringing him (Chelios) on the trip, but I told him last night after the game, ‘you’re on the trip,’ because depending on who is going and who is not going.â€Â

Asked who was bumped, Babcock said, “I’m not telling you. As long as they play, I don’t have to tell you guys (reporters) nothing, right?â€Â

The optional nature of the morning skate made it impossible to discern who might be injured; some defensemen, like Brett Lebda and Derek Meech, skated; others, like Nicklas Lidstrom, Andreas Lilja and Brian Rafalski also were at the arena.

I specifically asked Babcock if it was Lidstrom, and Babcock said, "no, no, no."

Babcock would like to not have Chelios, 46 next month, play in back-to-back situations. Meech, the seventh defenseman on the team, usually plays when Chelios is being rested, or when there is an injury.

it's gotta be kronwall..

i feel lidstrom though..he only played 25 last night, considering it was a tight game right up till the last few minutes i would expect 29 from him.

add to that babcocks 'denial'..

worried in england

I did catch Lidstrom flexing his left knee at some point during the game yesterday, can't remember when though. Know one really said anything about it, so I assume he's okay. He did play the rest of the game, I wonder if it wasn't until after he cooled down and took the gear off that the pain set in. Anyway, don't want to speculate....

MLIVE is reporting that both Meech and Lebda practiced this morning so we can cross them off the list:

Injury on defense might force Chelios into lineup

by Ansar Khan

With games on back-to-back nights, Wings coach Mike Babcock was planning on leaving Chris Chelios home for tonight's game in Nashville and inserting Derek Meech into the lineup. But a minor injury to an undisclosed player forced the team to bring Chelios on the trip. Babcock said after the morning skate that he wouldn't know who'd be out on defense until just before the game.

"We'll see who's eligible and who's not,'' said Babcock, who wouldn't reveal the injured player but said it's not Nicklas Lidstrom.

It isn't Meech or Brett Lebda, either, as they both skated during the optional practice.

Kirk Maltby (sore back) and Kris Draper (sprained knee) didn't make the trip. Maltby was scheduled to see a specialist again on Monday. Draper hopes to begin practicing with the team on Wednesday.

Cheli can handle it. Does everyone else live in fear of something happening to Lidstrom? I know I do...

For some reason I have never feared for Lidstroms health. The way he plays just isnt that dangerous. He doesn't put himself in bad situations.

Saying that, injuries still happen - but Lidstrom has really found a way to limit them.

Gee, by process of elimination: Not Lids, Raf, Lil, Lebda, Meech, or Cheli. Who's not mentioned?

Yikes. Hope he's OK- whoever "he" is.

You saw that, too? Sharp eyes, my man. My heart stopped for a beat when I saw that, it was just as they went off on a TV break. He was right back out there when play resumed, so I forgot about it. But I saw the same thing you did.

Hopefully, it was just shaking off a little twinge. Like you, I don't want to borrow any trouble. Glad this was a false alarm with Cheli traveling on back to backs.

*knocking on wood, tossing salt over my shoulder, whatever it takes to ward off bad juju where Nick is concerned.*
