wings_fanatic 677 Report post Posted December 29, 2007 Well, once Nick Lidstrom retires, who do you guys think will become the captain of our Wings? Personally, I think that there are 2 possible choices, that being Datsyuk and Z... Personally I think Datsyuk will become captain simply because he is my favorite and because he seems to be more captain like.
BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted December 29, 2007 Really? Datsyuk doesn't strike me as captain material at all. He's a very good player and a lot of fun to watch. But I've never really seen the leadership qualities in him that you need for a Captain. Assuming he's still a Wing when Lidstrom retires, I think it will be Zetterberg. If he's not around, I'm not sure who.
Rice 42 Report post Posted December 29, 2007 It will be Zetterberg. He's been being groomed for the captaincy for a while.
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted December 29, 2007 I'm willing to bet that Zetterberg is being primed for captaincy
RedWingedKitten 9 Report post Posted December 29, 2007 Probably Z, however, if Datsyuk improves his english he could have a chance. Dats is one of the classyest guys on our team.
ehorn3 2 Report post Posted December 29, 2007 Zetterberg without a doubt since he is going to sign a 12 year deal
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted December 29, 2007 To be honest, I think it has a lot to do with how far Z gets past his back problems. If he's unable to put together a 75 game season on a regular basis then he might not be the best choice for captain if only because he's not always present. Now, I hope, in the name of every retired number in those rafters, that Z keeps playing at the pace he's been playing this year and the end of last and does so for more than 75 games a year. As it stands now I'm pretty bummed about his injury. BUT if he has to sit out the rest of the frickin' season to heal that back- he damn well better. I want to see #40 making goalies cry for 20 more years!

If he's unable to put together a 75 game season on a regular basis then he might not be the best choice for captain if only because he's not always present. This is a joke, right? He has missed a critical mass of games ONCE in his career due to his back injury. You can't honestly attribute that to him as a bad choice for captain. A certain #19 had total knee replacement and found time to captain us to the Cup a few times...remember? Z will be captain.
irishtemper14+25 11 Report post Posted December 29, 2007 Z will play the rest of his career in detroit(or at least the majority of it) and will be cpt, if not then draper
#19=Legend 29 Report post Posted December 29, 2007 Zetterberg for sure. Honestly i dont think datsyuk would be second behind Zata for the C....or even third behind him for that matter. Draper Maltby and Holmstrom would be thought of before Dats. Not ragging on Dats or anything because i love him as much as everyone here. But he just lacks the leadership qualities that a captain needs

CdnWingsFanEh 2 Report post Posted December 29, 2007 Didn't Holland at one point all but say it would be Zetterberg once Lidstrom retires? I think it was while they were picking Lidstrom for the current Captain. I think it goes to show that they are at least grooming him to be the next one... I think it'll be pretty hard to wrestle it away from him at this point...

But he just lacks the leadership qualities that a captain needs I'm not quite so sure about that. I mean, they are rotating the alternate captain to Datsyuk, and not to Maltby or Holmstrom. Not that either of them couldn't handle it, I just think they would likely give it to Dats, and maybe an "A" to one of the others.. (if for whatever reason it didn't go to Z, which I don't ever see happening) Edit: clarity Edited December 29, 2007 by CdnWingsFanEh

Rabia. I was merely saying there's a chance this back injury isn't a simple bump in the road. You're a doctor, hun, you tell me whether back spasms like this tend to be a chronic injury. Now look at his case history. Two years in a row we're seeing back problems. The whole situation with Hank's back scares the crap out of me. Nothing would make me happier then to find out he's ready to go soon and have this back crap behind him. I'm merely playing the devil's advocate here. Clearly Z is the most likely choice. He's still doesn't provide the case had did back before the back problems.

Yeah no s*** there's a chance this could be a chronic injury. Maybe it's a tumor. Maybe he sheared his spinal cord. But there's a chance it could not be a chronic injury too. Hockey players play injured all the time. ALL THE TIME. Again...Stevie was a case in point. Z doesn't need to be playing right now. We have 59 damn points. This is the perfect time for him to be resting. 82 games a year will wear even the most elite athlete out. It's not uncommon for a player to not play 82 games a year. Not everyone is Kirk Maltby. Hell, even he's out. It just annoys me when people spaz out over Hank's back. He's taking a precautionary rest. In the end, it doesn't matter what we think. Plus Lids is here for another two years so we can just chill until then. (Incidentally, don't call me "hun" please. It demeans me to a puck bunny and implies I don't know what I'm talking about. Oh...and feel free to change your member title. Viperar is my home boy.)
Wings_Dynasty 267 Report post Posted December 29, 2007 Zetterberg isn't on the Wings yet in 2010-11. I can still see him in an Oilers or Nucks uni. He hasn't been as direct with wantng to stay in Detroit as Pavel has, and Pavel WILL be here in 10-11. So Pavel right now, Z if he is here.

Z has said he would like to play his entre career in Detroit. The fact that he is NOT ALLOWED to have a contract extension right now and Pavel does is a direct result of the fact that Pavel demanded a contract that allowed him UFA status as soon as possible. In fact, that seems to suggest Pavel was more interested than Z in LEAVING Detroit. Just so you know.

Hockey is a business, and things change, but I can't see either of them anxious to leave Detroit. Then again, I never expected Fedorov to leave either, or Shanny. So, you never know. I see Z as the next Captain, in a few years when Nick is gone. Oh, the horror -- no Nick? Maybe he will be like Queen Elizabeth and simply refuse to leave office.
