Cicada 4 Report post Posted January 18, 2008 Shawn Matthias is gong to make his NHL debut tonight.. http://panthers.nhl.com/team/app/?service=...rticleid=350443 i know it's only for Florida, but could anyone have guessed at the progress that this kid's made. It really makes the bert trade look awful now, but i still don't really regret doing it.. if only bertuzzi had panned out.. * sigh * imho he was the best Canadian player at the world juniors, and now he's getting a chance at the big time...i wonder if the scouts ever thought he would progress this quickly. 2 years ago he wasn't projected to be more than a 4th liner / ahler at best
Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted January 18, 2008 *throws tomatoes at Ken Holland* I can't believe of all the prospects we have in the organization he traded the one guy that could actually be a power-forward. There are so many other guys he could have traded, who aren't doing crap right now (kinda like what Matthias was doing last year) and could have gotten away with it. Now, it's looking like it was of the worst trades possible. At the time, it looked like nothing, because we needed a player like Bertuzzi. I was in favor of it even. But Bertuzzi was useless here, and then he stiffs us to be with his bed partner Burke in Anaheim, and we lose out on a great prospect in the process. Hopefully this Matthias kid spends his career in Florida or any other team we never play, because I can already see he'll be out to prove the Wings wrong for trading him. So whenver something we do doesn't work out great, I just look at that and it makes me feel a little better.
Earthhuman 8 Report post Posted January 18, 2008 That's the world of sports for you. Florida already has Horton, a legit power forward, so they may end up trading Matthias. To us- no, but that does mean that he will probably end up in the western conference, since Florida wont want to play him often, either. From there, it's a 33% chance that he ends up in the Central. All in all, I'd call it about a 15-20% chance that we play him eight times a year in the future.

Wings_Dynasty 267 Report post Posted January 18, 2008 Never know, we may get him back, then again he may beak his leg in the first game he plays. It's a game of chance and Holland took one. Better than sitting around HOPING we get a power forward, he made a move to get one.

All in all, I'd call it about a 15-20% chance that we play him eight times a year in the future. I missed the rule that said you're only allowed a maximum of one power forward per team. Oh well. The problem with the Bertuzzi deal was more what we were GETTING than what we were giving up. You have to be pretty much blind homer to root for a piece of trash like Bertuzzi, who was never an honorable player (before or after he destroyed Steve Moore), not to mention a washed up goon who took stupid penalties in the playoffs. It was as if we reacquired "Maid" Derian Hatcher, slapped a #44 on him, and threw him in at forward. The Wings are going to lose some good prospects when they're in a position to win EVERY year, that's just the nature of the game. Unfortunately, with the salary cap, most of the fun is over, since you can't stay competitive unless you develop young talent that you can employ for cheap, in addition to big money guys like Lidstrom, Hank, and Datsyuk. GuloGulo 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2008 Everyone and their uncles wanted Power Forward X last spring. Bert was the best of the deadline acquisitions, sadly enough, I might add. Are you people who say "we shouldve traded someone else" sure the Panthers would've taken anything but a "PF" in return for Bert?

Yeah, a January call up to the 27th best team in the league. No way he makes the Wings roster right now. Grand Rapids could use his help, though.

Are you people who say "we shouldve traded someone else" sure the Panthers would've taken anything but a "PF" in return for Bert? i was for the trade at the time, and i'm sitll not against it.. i was just pointing out Matthias's amazing development over the past year or so... when the trade was originally announced on TSN they said "for a mid level prospect".. then when they found out it was Matthias half of them went 'WHO?'... less than a year later this kids starred in the OHL and at the WJC, and is about to make his NHL debut... BUT i still don't regret the trade... it was a good move at the time, because Matthias was nothing more than a mid level prospect, and really wasn't showing any signs of being anything more. if you look at our prospects, 1/2 of them who had a lot more potential upside than Matthias will never make the NHL with us, i'm not entirely sure that Matthias would ever play for us, even if he wasn't traded. I'll take a proven NHL'er who could make a major difference (albeit he didn't) over a unproven prospect who just MIGHT be a good player down the line anyday... GMRwings1983 8,803 Report post Posted January 18, 2008 That trade definitely proves that even Kenny Holland can make dumb mistakes. Hopefully, the Wings don't ever make another trade like this again.

We gave him up for a guy who was still not 100% blah blah. Yeah they could have not made the deal and then people would be crying that Holland didn't do anything at the deadline and where would Matthias be right now? Not on the Wings roster and probably wouldn't be next year either. You have to take chances sometimes. Edited January 18, 2008 by StevieY9802

When you make trades you take the risk of the player you give up becoming something great. Im happy for Matthias that he got the call , but you don't know if he is going to pan out or not. Hopefully for him that he does end up with a good career.
Saran 1 Report post Posted January 18, 2008 I'm going to reserve judgment until he plays a full season in the NHL cause it is a lot different than any other league. Just the fact that he is playing a game doesn't mean he is 100% going to be a future star power forward. Just wait and see and then we can kick ourselves.
