1st Round Playoff Opponent

Who do you guys want to see the Wings play in round 1? The Wings have been bitten by some 'Cinderella' teams in the past few years early in the playoffs, so who do you want to see the Wings face in round 1, and who would you like to avoid?

Personally, I would HATE to see Phoenix in round 1 - I have a bad feeling about them this year. A team like Colorado would be my first choice for a round 1 opponent. Calgary would be tough - but I think we could take them.

Heres how the standings sit today:

1. Detroit *

2. Dallas *

3. Minnesota *

4. San Jose

5. Colorado

6. Anaheim

7. Calgary

8. Phoenix

9. Nashville

10. Vancouver

11. Columbus

12. St. Louis

13. Edmonton

14. Chicago

15. Los Angeles

teams I wouln't want to Wings to face are Vancouver, and Chicago. We might get lil cocky and think if we play solid we will be able to advance to next round, and if Luongo plays like a madman, it will do some damage to our players mentally. As for Chicago, Hawks will have tough time getting in playoff picture but somehow I think Toews is going to score some back breaking goals against us.

Teams I would want to face is San Jose, Calgary. Altough there is almost no chance that SJ will drop to 8th, I think it would be good idea to slay the monster before they even wake up. Calgary because I wouldn't want Wings to face them after Kipper gets hot.

As for ducks, I wouldn't mind Wings go against them in 1st round, I don't think it is going to make any easier or harder to face them in any rounds. If anything I want Wings to face them before their D and Giguere are in proper playoff mode. They will be lil cocky thinking they can beat us and we will have more motivation playing relentless in round 1.

I don't expect Wings fans to be shaking in their boots at the thought of playing the Blues considering the ownage displayed over them in recent years. But this year is different. Since Andy Murray took over it seems as if the Blues are a real opponent for the Wings. Not only that, despite what you think of Legace, he has been an absolute monster and should even be given MVP consideration. Plues there's that whole "stick it to the team that let you go" mentality running in his head- not something the Wings want come playoff time.

Teams the Red Wings would want to play are as follows:

Colorado

Calgary

Chicago

Nashville

Teams they don't want to see in that 8 spot:

St. Louis

Vancouver

Anaheim

Minnesota

I don't really want Colorado (not from an "easy opponent" standpoint anyway.) Too many close games against them this year and they're likely to get all their big guns back in time for the first round. Don't want Vancouver, let someone else deal with Luongo. I'd take Phoenix. Maybe with some luck Dallas will slide back to 8th.

Wow, just yesterday it was Nashville instead of Phoenix in the eighth spot. The Predators are the team I'd like to see. Though I really hate that team. Columbus would be a good pick, but only because they've never made it to the playoffs. Doesn't really matter to me, but whichever team it is the Wings can't take them lightly.

Don't really know, don't really care. There is so much parity and every team when you make the playoffs is dangerous. There are probably not going to be any series that will be a cakewalk. Hence me not really giving a hoot who the Wings play in the first round, as it will probably be difficult regardless of the opponent.

Columbus

as for phoenix... i would love to play them to make "the great whiner" cry even harder.

Damn, you really hate the guy. I think the last 4 or 5 posts of yours that I have come across take a shot at him in one way or another.

I just don't see how you can dislike Wayne Gretzky, sure he may whine - but really, what coach doesn't? Its practically their job! haha.

Guest Canadian Wings

I wouldn't wanna face Anaheim first round, Calgary makes me a bit nervous as well. I wouldn't mind anyone else tho. I think we won't have a problem with Dallas, San Jose, or Minnesota in a series at all.

I disagree. Since I live in Denver I see alot of the Avs and I really don't see how they could win a 7 game series vs the Wings. Sure I know anything can happen, but neither one of their goaltenders is very scary, they have alot of young, inexperienced players, and their better players and superstars are so banged up, I'm not sure they can be a factor when they return. Not to mention I think Quennville is pretty average as a coach.

Other than Colorado, I'd take Minnesota, Nashville, Columbus. Pretty much anyone not in the Western time zone.

Teams I don't want in the first are obviously the Ducks, and probably SJ just for the travel.

I'm not sure whether to root for the Ducks or not - I would rather see them win their division and meet them in the WCF if at all. If I root against them, it's possible (though unlikely) they would fall to 8th and we would have to play them first. Oddly enough I find I want them to win enough of their games to stay out of the 6-7-8 spots.

I'm confident in our ability to beat anyone from the Central or Northwest. We've had some rough games against a couple of these guys (hello, Chicago), but I think that we can overcome any of these guys if every Wing is willing to play hockey.

The Pacific guys are the ones I'm not sure about. Anaheim will always feel dangerous to me, but that could be because I'm exposed to their propaganda on a daily basis.

No no no! You never choose your poison! :nonono:

good call, i hate when people root for bad teams just so we can play them instead. There is nothing easy about the playoffs.

if by some miracle the ducks would slide to 8th, playing them in the first round would be the best for us. Getting a crack at them with 7 games, hopefully with a healthy roster would be awesome.
