Holland to offer McCarty a contract?

This is such a feel-good story that you just want it work out in the worst way. I get goosebumps thinking about Mac's "road to redemption." I think my greatest fear over all of this is that he'll be brought back only to not be able to cut it on a team that isn't the same as when he left. As much I want him back, though, I don't want Downey tossed out in the cold.

I would love to see Mac in the Winged Wheel again, and soon.

That said, I'm not sure if he's quite up to NHL yet. I haven't seen him play; I'm just going by what others have said.

However, if anyone gets injured, I'll sleep better knowing that it is our McCarty who will come roaring in to save the day. I'd rather have him called up than anyone (not meaning that as any sort of a bash against the GR guys).

Grind Line 2008. My dream come true.

As long as it doesn't interfere monetarily-wise with our Deadline acquisitions, I'm all for it. I don't think the Wings will put themselves over the cap due to how much (player/pick-wise) they'd have to give up in order to make that happen. If that's the case and Mac is willing to sign for the minimum, I don't see the problem in bringing him in as *insurance only*.

For those of you that think he's going to be this upgrade over Drake or Kopecky, you really need to think about what your basing that assumption on, because even I have a hard time rationalizing it.

His role, I believe, is added insurance (experience) for the playoffs..........I believe heart is already there with the vets we have ....

again, what a great story for D-Mac!

this is a win-win situation......D-Mac's life is in order at a price he will get back on his feet without hurting the cap!

The way I see it, i'd rather have a guy like McCarty out there than Kopecky, I mean he can't be worse than him. But thats just my opinion.

You obviously havent been watching games or not watching them closely enough. Kopecky has played well enough to earn a spot this year. Also signing D-Mac to a contract doesnt meant hes automaticaly a Red Wing, its just means they can call him up if feel hes earned it.

If he does come back, I don't see why all of you are saying that Downey will be out. I think it's way more likely that Drake would be out.

And if you don't think that Mac is worth it, just think of it this way. We call up people from GR often, and he is the best player on their team. Heart aside (which I think is the most important thing) his stats don't lie.

Right, Mac will be the 23rd guy on the 23 man roster.

Just remember everyone - If Mac gets this contract, and the Wings want to make sure he stays as their property, they're going to need to put him on the roster OR only send him back for a 2 week conditioning stint. If they sign him and send him back to GR, he'll need to pass through waivers, and I'm not sure if anyone would really want to sign him but I don't want to take the chance and I don't think Holland does either. So regardless, if Mac gets this offer, we'll see him in Detroit within 2 weeks of the deal. I just really hope they put him in right away, let him get his feet wet and legs back, and maybe he can play on the Grind Line again. Man that would be sweet.

All I can say is this...

I want to be at the game that he makes it back at the Joe... (if he does this season)

That place is going to go f'ing nuts...

I got tickets for February 29th vs. SJ, the first home game after the deadline. I'm hoping Mac makes his return that night. We may see Sundin then too.

:showoff:

Maybe im sceptical, but I see this as an excuse for Holland not to go out after a big tough scoring forward.

This seems like a Kenny way to go about finding an excuse.

First of all, learn to spell. Second, Holland has his job because he is great at it. He wins games. End of story.

Tuesday is the deadline for players to sign and be eligible for the SC playoffs.

Drake has gotta see the writing on the wall here. He eally hasn't been much help this year like we'd all hoped. If Mac can do just as much or maybe even a little more then I'd much rather have him.

I'm pretty positive that Mac can do just as much as Drake, it wouldn't be to hard.

What? You mean the guy who hasn't played good hockey since 2001 and is veritable defensive jelly?

No thanks. That's nostalgia, and Lapointe will actually cost us.

with the exception of price tag, you're basically describing McCarty. Well, there is also the difference that Lapointe is actually still an NHL calibre player, which makes him head and shoulders better than Mac at this point.

Isn't Lapointe injured anyway?

It's a little sad when the voice of reason about this has to come from someone with the name "Never Forget Mac." :D

If Holland wants to throw some money his way on the off chance he might actually be able to play at an NHL level by the playoffs, go nuts. I would love for McCarty to be able to make a contribution at this level again. However, if this is any sort of backup plan when Holland doesn't get a gritty scoring Winger, I will be extremely pissed.

I totally agree about Drake, Kopecky, and even Downey. You guys need to rub the nostalgia out of your eyes. It's 2008. Downey isn't the most talented guy in the world, but he got signed on an NHL club and is getting minutes, while Mac is barely on the comeback trail. Downey would likely hand Mac his ass right now if they got in a fight.

And I don't even know what to say to those who think a 35 year-old minor leaguer who's been playing hockey for less than three months should take the roster spot of Kopecky. By the time the season is over, Kopecky will likely have scored more points than McCarty has since the lockout. Kopecky's no franchise player, but he's not terrible, and he's improving, and he is absolutely more valuable to the Wings than Mac.

Downey, Drake, McCarty.....Not worried about toughness at this point. Lets get Hossa.

Hold on there...you can't put Drake and Downey in the same category of Toughness. Sure you can say Drake is tough because he plays hard in the corners and ain't afraid to get dirty (so to speak) but they definitely don't compare. You ask anyone in the league who they would rather fight and they'll take Drake over Downey any day because they know they'd win.

And I really don't think the Wings are going to get Hossa. Sundin, after what I heard yesterday, is sounding more possible - but Hossa I just don't see. I'd love to be proved wrong though, that would make my day

I am torn about this I really am. I want to see him back but I think he is probably finished or wont be able to even compare to the McCarty of old. But at the end of the day, sign him for depth, it wont cost much and he will be a "reserve" if you will.
