"Pairing Don Cherry and Barry Melrose will provide NHL fans with two of the most respected and opinionated voices in hockey today," Norby Williamson, ESPN executive vice president of production, said in a statement.

:nonono:

According to who?

i definitely don't always agree with what he says, but he should bring some life to hockey analysis to ESPN, and I'd rather have him in there as well rather than just melrose speaking out of his ass.

i love grapes so much! i'm excited to see him school barry melrose. and i think it's so freakin awesome that he's donating the money he makes to the humane society.

he's a good man and a smart man and an entertaining man and it kinda bums me out that so many people around here hate him so much.

This should be great. I might have to Vivo some of that now. I loved it when they put him and Hull on the same channel. It was great.

add Doc Emrick and we have a set of 3 d*[cut]* who make just about everyone puke...

that would be: bias (Mullet), stubbornness (Cherry) and gold-mouth (Emrick).

now just add a guest spot for eklund to take care of the "inside information" and i think we'd have a show ...

This move will have absolutely no influence on me at all. I am nearing my two-month anniversary of boycotting ESPN broadcast products. Not only do I think I'm better for it, but I am also happier.

ahah wow this is unpresidented. two of the biggest assholes to ever pretend to analyze hockey on one station!

Don't you think you're just being a tad overdramatic here?

Anyways, I think this is cool news. Cherry, at the very least, will crank up the entertainment value of the shows then. Like him or not, he is passionate and gets people's attention. Plus he's a snappy dresser. :P

I don't take anything that sports analysts or experts say that seriously anyway, it doesn't have any effects on the outcomes of games. Just extra stuff to listen to every now and then.

I love Don. In RL he's actually a big softie. Kudos to him for donating his fees to the Humane Society. I watch CBC over any other network for my hockey games, even Mickey and company (and Mickey cracks me up). BTW, in case anyone missed it, Grapes predicted the Wings in the finals. Yeah, maybe a no-brainer to some but I've found he is rarely wrong, especially when it comes to common sense things. Bottom line, he is entertaining whether you agree with him or not.

I love watching Grapes on HNIC. Having him on ESPN will have no downside for fans in the US (unless you hate him beforehand). He might gain some interest in hockey for people, and he might attract a little bit of interest from ESPN execs ie. trying to get games back on there. For people who don't see him often, this will be a big step up from just Melrose...although anyone would help Melrose. ANYONE.
