2008 College Football Thread

I can see your point and its hard not to argue against it. I was more arguing that Michigan's loss to Appy State cannot be compared to MSU's hoops loss to GVSU. It was an exhibition and the game did not count. If your staying it doesnt matter then ESPN should be starting their top stories with the NFL upset of the year. The Lions defeated the defending super bowl champion Giants, 13-10 last night. It was only an exhibition but to some people, the game still counts. Give me a break!! Michigan fans, go back to your cracks on how MSU cant beat Central Michigan or Indiana....or how Michigan owns us...how we are little brother. Enough with resorting to "well michigan state loss to GVSU". For starters, this is a college football thread...save that for the hoops thread....and more importantly, it's Michigan State. Can't you find another amusing way to poke fun at Spartans then this. You already know I am coming with the Appy State jokes....the Dick Rod jokes. You would be shocked if I didnt.

We all know the MSU game didn't count, but c'mon if that happened to Michigan it is easy to bring up because if MSU/GVSU rematch 100 times MSU wins by a large margin 99 times. The Lions-Giants game is a very poor example. You got a handful of guys on each team that will never play a regular season game, and have a bunch of young guys playing on top of that. I will leave it at though because this isn't basketball season.

I really want to agree on the USC/Stanford point, because you can easily argue App State has better talent then Stanford, and how USC was much more dominant then Michigan, but the fact is Stanford plays in a major conference in the PAC 10 (and is D1) while App State is I-AA (or whatever it's called now). The App State game IMO is the greatest upset ever in sports besides the Miracle On Ice.

See I look at this past Super Bowl as one of the greatest upsets ever or Rudlon Gardner's wrestling upset over a heavily favorited Russian in the 1996 olympic games. (sorry if i misspelled or dont know the full details...too lazy to look it up)

Appy State beating in Michigan barely makes my top 5 greatest upsets of all time.

It's fairly painful to admit, but Chaminade beating UVA in I think 1982 is so far beyond Appy State it's not even funny. A Final Four team and the #1 ranked team in the nation losing to a team that's not even a member of the NCAA? Unthinkable.

this discussion reminds me of the thread I created a year ago about the greatest upsets ever. Take a look back

http://www.letsgowings.com/forums/index.ph...2&hl=upsets

There are a lot of good upsets brought up in there, and the ones above you 2 guys mentioned, but in my book I will be putting App State at No. 2 for probably a long time. I know there are some other very good upsets...maybe it was just because I witnessed the U-M/App State game in person. I don't know.....

What are people's thoughts on ND this year? Anyone think they will have a winning record? They return tons of people, but I don't know if thats good or bad.....

I don't think they'll be as good as people say they will. Returning a whole bunch of people from a team that went 3-9 isn't exactly a good thing. Their schedule isn't all that rough though. They play an assortment of bad and mediocre teams in BCS conferences - Washington, Pitt, Syracuse, Stanford, BC, Purdue, MSU, and I'd add UNC to that list except UNC is good this year. 6-8 wins, I think.

6-8?! Way too low! Don't you know ND still has God's son playing QB?

I think returning players in this instance is a good thing for Notre Dame. If there was even one positive to come from last season it was that the underclassmen got plenty of playing experience. The talent is there - Weis has done wonders recruiting, compared to Willingham. I think we'll finally see major evidence of that fact moreso in 2009 than this year. Realistically, I expect about a 7-5 season (eight wins would be outstanding) and a win in a bowl game. I'm very biased to Notre Dame, but I believe Weis has the program on the right path, and we'll see the new and improved version of the Irish this fall.

Not to go into great detail, but the level of improvement for ND depends mostly on the play of the offensive line. If they play like last season, it will be another disaster year. With the talent and depth the Irish have now at the skill positions, the o-line has to give those players a chance to perform. Giving up the most sacks in college football, having no running game, and letting Clausen get destroyed in the pocket is unacceptable. I'm thrilled with the addition of Jon Tenuta to the coaching staff. He will really help out the defense, especially in the pass-rush department, which was almost nonexistent last year. I'm looking forward to actually seeing some effective blitzing for once.

The schedule is pretty favorable for Notre Dame. Overall, I see the results playing out something like this (hopefully):

San Diego State - Win

Michigan - Loss

Michigan State - Win

Purdue - Win

Stanford - Win

North Carolina - Loss

Washington - Win

Pittsburgh - Loss

Boston College - Win

Navy - Win

Syracuse - Win

USC - Loss by 50 points

Makes you think that going 1-11 would be satisfying to some.

With a lot of Spartans fans, going 0-12 wouldn't even bother them as long as Michigan went 1-11. In fact it'd probably be their favorite season ever, because it'd be Michigan's worst.

Pretty much. Or like I always tell my friends:

Q: What was the best game in Michigan State history?

A: Appalachian State/Michigan

That's why they'll always and forever be little brother.

I would believe that if they had a QB.

They got a QB. At least, I'm not worried that Threet or Sheridan will have problems running the show - IF the line can protect them. Way more worrisome is the idea that a defensive lineman can switch to the O-line and in less than a week be mentioned as a candidate to start. Not good.

Yes, very true. When I read about Ferraha I shook my head too. The thought of Sheridan starting though gives me chills

If you all want to watch Appalachian State try to do the unthinkable again and beat another ranked team to start the season, the LSU-App. State game has been moved to 11:00am ET tomorrow from the late afternoon now showing on ESPN Classic with the dangerous threat of Hurricane Gustav possibly coming here in a few days and the massive amounts of traffic and likely evacuations from around here this weekend. Former time/channel was 5:00pm ET and ESPN.

To be honest, I wish they would just cancel the game completely until later this season. I love watching football and it is big down here obviously, but there are way too many things right now going on down here that are much more important than a football game.
