betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 Waffleboarded? I've not heard Doc use that. I'm guessing he's talking about a goalie's blocker? You could almost have a "waffleboarded away" drinking game. It's probably second only to "DRIVE!" Not that I mind Doc Emrick. He's got a special talent for knowing exactly what happened to the puck when you lose sight of it. After a DRIVE! from the point has been waffleboarded away, for example. haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 You've not heard his special term of endearment of that particular piece of paraphernalia? You've seen games called by Doc, right? I definitely have seen games called by Doc. I guess it didn't bother me. I can sure hear him saying "DRIVE!" Assuming he's talking about a goalie knocking away the puck with his blocker, I don't see what the big deal is. Waffleboard is oldschool for blockers, so if you're knocking the puck away with that, why not? It's like calling a jersey a sweater, even though they haven't been for decades. egroen 384 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 Heh, I actually like Doc. I'm kinda (not completely) shocked at how many can't stand Daniels and Redmond (fans of other teams).
Hockeymom1960 5,107 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 What's so bad about Doc? Are there any commentators people here approve of other than our own homer announcers?? Strader seems only fair since we have to endure "Eddie the Oaf"
GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 Strader is a good replacement, but it won't be the same without Emrick. I don't get the claims that Emrick gushes over Crosby. If anything, I have always thought of Doc to be very fair and particularly complimentary of the Red Wings. I could do without that clown McGuire though. edicius 3,269 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 I'd prefer Doc over Olczyk, that's for sure. Eddie O sounds like an idiot no matter what game he's calling. As for other play by play guys? Jim Hughson immediately comes to mind (love the way he says "RO-BERT-O LU-ON-GO!" ). The guys that do the Sharks play by play are pretty decent too. And, I know I'm in the minority on this, I've always had a soft spot for Darren Pang (probably because he's good friends with Stevie Y).

miller76 463 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 I dont really mind 'Doc', I like listening to him. At least this game we dont have to listen to him have a coronary everytime someone rings one off the goalpost. I have others that I like to listen too as well, but Olzyck is not one of them. He is incompetent and a slappy for Chicago.

TheWestWing 71 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 Holy Jumpin'!!! If liking Panger as color commentary is wrong, I don't want to be right. Strats and Panger are the absolute best out there currently. Keep in mind their team has only been in PHX like 10 years or summin and they still are doing their best to build a fanbase. Which at times means a lil too much enthusiasm perhaps. But the Holy Jumpin drinking game cannot be beat. Drunk by midway thru the game. Always. But at least they live in the present. Gluten Boy cannot find his way out of the 80s. Plz go back Mick - your hair is waiting.....
Nev 1,085 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 You think you guys have it bad with Doc - you should try listening to him do the Overseas broadcast every year for the Stanley Cup finals (with Micheletti). The NHL seems to think that fans who've been watching the NHL all season suddenly need to be treated like 3 years olds who have no knowledge of the game or its rules. So Doc has to explain what Icing, Offsides, line-changes etc etc etc are every single time one happens. And every player has to be prefaced with "The Great" So you get "The great Sergei Gonchar" and "The great Ryan Malone"
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 (edited) Strader is a good replacement, but it won't be the same without Emrick. I don't get the claims that Emrick gushes over Crosby. If anything, I have always thought of Doc to be very fair and particularly complimentary of the Red Wings. I could do without that clown McGuire though. Probably because 99.9% of NHL fans outside of the Penguins have an obsession of disliking Crosby and/or the media fascination with him. I find waffleboarded hilarious actually. In terms of all the nooks and crannys of these guys, I don't pay attention to them enough to dislike them, I usually just watch the games. Only people that come close to annoying to me were the Nashville broadcasters but that was seasons ago and all local broadcasters are going to be homers no matter what the team is. And waffleboarded is more funny to me than annoying. Edited January 1, 2009 by SouthernWingsFan

ComradeWasabi 109 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 That Doc Emerick picture had me in tears when it was first posted last playoffs. Too funny. As for acceptable broadcast crews, I don't mind TSN's Gord Miller, the CBC guys are usually good, and Jim Hughson is awesome. As posted before, whenever he says "ROBERTO LUONGO!" is great. I also like Doc, he's solid. As for who I don't like: Pierre McGuire. God, that guy is a douchebag. Also Eddie Olczyk is annoying too. But mostly McGuire. Donaldjr2448 43 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 I personally like Doc. I had a chance to meet him after a Wings game at Joe Louis, he was doing the broadcast for Fox, back when they use to do the Sunday afternoon games. He is real nice guy, he is also very knowledgable of the game. I wouldn't say that he is a homer at all nor would he pick one player to love, he is a professional behind the mic and away from the mic as well. If I'm not mistaken he grew up in Michigan (I think on the west side of the state). I also meet Darren Pang at the Chicago Airport once, he is super cool!! He was heading to Traverse City to play golf with the Wings when I meet him, He took more time than usual to talk with me, since I was in my Navy Whites coming back from bootcamp!! My Granfather meet Dave Strader, and he said that Dave was an a-hole, he just wanted nothing to do with the fans that were haing out with them at a bar, he did however meet Mickey Redmond, he told me that Mick was AWESOME!! He also got me Mic's auotgraph that I still have today, complete with the Mickey Redmond traveling tours number!!!
AtomicPunk 296 Report post Posted January 2, 2009 Strader did a great job today. Reminded me of old Wings games listening to him. I'm not a Doc Emerick fan but he does OK.
Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted January 2, 2009 I would like Emrick as a commentary guy or analyst, or something along those lines. Just not as play-by-play. He has certain vocal quirks that drive me up the wall.
Wings_Fan_In_Exile 3 Report post Posted January 2, 2009 The more I think about it the more I realize it's Olczyk and Mcguire that drive me nuts more than anything. And count me in the Pang fan club. I love that guy's enthusiasm. The funny thing for me is, I watched the game at a dive bar (hard to find Wings games in Denver) where a damn juke box took priority and I watched the game muted anyway. At least I didn't have to hear em sing the baseball song at a hockey game.
egroen 384 Report post Posted January 2, 2009 Strader tried to call the game but Olczyk will not shut his yapper so often that it was driving me crazy. There were great plays and excellent scoring opportunities that were not even commented on because Olczyk was blabbing away about weather conditions with McGuire or spouting off on what a great city Chicago is. For much of the game they did not even show replays of the penalties. Hey Guys! There's a game going on!
