Peterson-Foote-Sims is a pretty not-terrible linebacking corps, I'll give them that.

I hate to do this, because it will bring me nothing but anguish. But I'm allowing myself to feel optimistic about the Lions again.

Same here. After next year's draft they could actually be (gulp) pretty good.

Step back.....Raiola is still our center which means run-blocking is going to suck, and the remains of what used to be Jeff Backus is still the left tackle which means the pass-blocking is going to suck. The Lions have managed to bring in any number of supposedly NFL-quality defensive backs in the past couple years and none have panned out - whether the new crop is any different is totally a mystery.

If "I think we could go 4-12 if a couple of breaks go our way" is optimism, then sign me up for the club.

Oh, Matt Millen. You crazy guy. Always good for a laugh:

“But there is no bigger fan anywhere of Mr. Ford than me, and I would love to see him holding a trophy. That would be great for me -- for him, rather -- but more importantly, it would be great for the fans of Detroit. They deserve it. They’re awesome fans."

Ford kept him employed for four years longer than anyone else in the world would have; the fact that he's a huge fan goes without saying. I don't know how genuine the love is for Detroit fans, but I just have this hunch it's not reciprocal.

is it me or does the offense look totally better? I like the o-line pickup of Jansen and if Pettigrew can block like a 6th lineman...he could be a steal in the draft. I think it boils down to if they can provide running room for Smith and they can pass block so that the QB (pick anyone) can throw to Calvin. The offense can be very exciting and score a lot of points. Which is good because the defense looks like it wont be able to stop anyone.

I guess it depends on how much kool-aid you're drinking  I agree with you though it could, but I think a lot of things would have to go our way. Just a few of things would be Stafford isn't thrown into the fire right away, the old Daunte really is showing up, Jansen still has some gas in the tank, and Pettigrew overachieves.

I'm also a little concerned now, because in the link BRTD posted it says Millen likes the Stafford, and Pettigrew pick!!!!! Isn't that a automatic red flag?!

Run Smith, Catch Calvin. Lions offense will be defined by that. If they don't produce, it may not necessarily be smith or calvin's fault.

Cobert is lazy and he sucks

That was brutal. As if his sole goal in the game was to hurt Stafford's stat line.

Staff looked pretty okay. Most of his passes were on the money and there were just too many drops. The pick six was bad, he should have eaten the sack, but in his defense the guy came in totally unblocked off the snap.

That TD pass was pro as hell too, standing in the pocket like a pimp and unleashing the dragon while getting drilled. It's a shame Daunte had CJ on the outside but instead just ran around every time he felt a hint of pressure and Stafford got stuck with Colbert.

From a fan of the opposite team this week in the Saints...

I wouldn't be too disappointed in the defensive performance for the Lions. I'm not trying to be a homer, but honestly unless injuries set in or they beat themselves, not a lot of people are going to stop the Saints offense on a consistent basis.

Even with the INTs I thought Stafford played fairly well and kept his poise.

Lions could've easily folded after going down 14-0 but they didn't. Granted the Saints helped them out some and the it's not unusual for the Saints to "play down" to the level of competition, but I think the Lions/fans will have some things to look forward to this year. There will be growing pains obviously, but I won't be shocked if they make some good progress.

All in all after 1 game regardless of it's football, hockey, baseball, or tiddly winks, not much point to get upset if you lose as it's a long season and plenty of opportunity for wins.

Hey, it's 2009! And the Lions still suck giant donkey dick. Matt Stafford: three picks, no touchdowns. Hope he's not the type to get discouraged easily, because he's going to lose more games in one season than he's probably lost in the last seven years.

Thats what I was thinking! And the OL still sucks!

stafford DID throw a TD, but a stupid ref blew it dead when he thought CJ's foot was out.

Yeah, I don't know what the hell the deal with that was. It's one thing to blow the call on CJ tightroping the sideline, but not a reviewable play? A player stepping out of bounds is absolutely a reviewable play! They had a review of nearly an identical play in the Bears-Packers game (the interception return to the goal line). I have no idea what's going on there with that crap.

Yeah, I wasn't really expecting them to stop Breesus, or even for Stafford to do anything but struggle -- this was a loss from the get-go. All a part of the decade long rebuilding process here in Detroit. :(

Decade in the singular form?

We all knew we were gonna lose. Maybe a little hoping against hope. I just want to see steady improvement in every facet of our game. The Lions have to build off something positive soon. We have a pretty tough schedule, hoping we take some teams by surprise. Last season there were at least 6 games we had a shot at that we blew late. We better capitalize on a few of those this season.

My dad is actively hoping for another 0-16 season. He figures it's unlikely he'll ever get to see the Lions in the Super Bowl any time in his lifetime so he wants to see them make history any way they can. I told him they'll need to indoctrinate Schwarz if they want to achieve that goal 'cause he doesn't seem to know any better.
