That was a special night. Mac dragging Lemieux right in front of Draper on the bench and the clown Patrick Roy all bloodied up from Vernon. I remember reading somewhere that many players on the Red Wings that season pointed to this game as being the turning point in winning a championship.

Good memories. That was the best rivalry I have ever seen in sports.

Da Perfesser  Bet his glass of wine tasted better after that game. :beerbuddy:

When I watch it now I still can't believe Lapew had his hands down. How could he not know retribution was coming his way?

I think my favorite part of that whole sequence is when Shanny sees Roy coming and just jumos and tackles him. Man, how I miss those days, I was only about 11 years old but I remember it like it was yesterday.

Thanks for the memories! Of all the "undercards", the one I had forgotten about was the Forsberg-Larionov bout. The Shanahan clothesline, with the camera angle from the end of the rink, is still beautiful to watch. The fact that Roy couldn't knock down Vernon and couldn't knock Osgood in their fight the following year, even with a size advantage over both.

In "The Payback" game, the Denver "Post" had a lot of quotes from Mike Keane, then with Colorado. The paper must have thought that this was the right way to put the proper "spin" on the game. He called Detroit "gutless" for waiting until a "meaningless game at home" to show how tough they were and "we'll see how tough they are in the playoffs". Memories were kept of this article by both the players and the fans.

And the memories of that game and that season are still sweet!

Here's a good article from ESPN(!)on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the game. It includes a link to the boxscore which is impressive in its own right.

Hmm, not a peep about this on the Avs' boards today. Wonder why. :g:

That article gave me shivers.

Just in case anyone is feeling sorry for the turtle (as if)...

What a great game.

I've watched a lot of games (as I'm sure everyone here has), but this one has just been burned into my brain so viscerally that I doubt I'll ever forget it.

Cheers to the Wings!

Many years after that historic game (which I was wise enough to videotape), My wife and I inserted tape two of our glorious wedding reception... only to be greeted by Mickey Redmond and that horrible sack that was calling play-by-play after Strader's departure.

Yep... I taped over the wedding reception. I still say it was worth every inch of celluloid.

Totally worth it. ;)

Absolute BEST game I have EVER been to! This game was a birthday present from my buddy, I remember after the brawl, we looked at each other and said "I don't even care if they win or lose, this is absolutely the best game we've ever seen!" They were losing at the time of the brawl, of course when they did win! OMG! "Those were the days!"-Archie Bunker. Thanks Dave! Thanks Red Wings!

Oh man I love that game!

I remember finishing the book Blood Feud last summer and I was just dying to watch it again. I scoured the internet for days and when I finally found it, it hasn't left my computer since!

I can't believe it was 12 years ago! That means I was 12! haha

Also, Hi everyone! I miss the game chats!

I'll be home April 5 for almost a month, so I'll join back in then

Ya I just got done watching this game via the 6 disk Red Wings "Celebration of Champions" set that a couple people mentioned earlier in the thread.

That game was unreal. Simply put, the best game I have ever seen. I remember watching it in the basement with my dad. I was young, but a devout Wing fan none the less. Anyways I remember we literally had gone out and bought a bunch of junk food and ordered pizza for the game - definitely a family event. Talk about intense man, wow. When the big one finally popped off me and my dad were both screaming louder then I ever really getting over a sports event. I was screaming while jumping on the couch next to my dad who was kept it on the ground.

Never forget that game, ever. One of the best memories of my life.

Wow, it's already been 12 years?! I was 11 at the time haha. Watching that game in my living room rooting for the wings and cheering the boys on for every hit of the game.

I can so remember that like it was last summer. Oh wait, that was the other cup :P

But seriously, that was a great moment in Red Wings history that won't be forgotten for years and years to come :)

Reread Blood Feud tonight in honour of the occasion.

It's funny how many things you forget. Claude's kid was named after his friend from NJ- none other than our own Shanny. Stuff like that. Maybe it's just my memory going. Good times. Maybe for the 25th anniversary we can do a GDT. Someone talk to FSN-D and see if they'll rebroadcast it.

Thats game is still so vivid in my memory, it felt like it could have been played last week.

I will never forget that game, standing in my living room. And just watching McCarty turn and explode all over Lemieux. He just destroyed him. I was yelling expletives one after another. And then I remember saying, "and Vernon with the effen take down! Roy ur a effen piece of s***!" And then shook nervously for about 20 minutes following it all. Crazy glory days!
