Shaman 713 Report post Posted March 28, 2009 (edited) I know a lot of people will agree with me, but there seems to be a curse of the Red Wings letting a player go through trade, free agency or waivers. They always seem to be the player that wins the game for the other team. Anyone have any theories on why this is? My vote is voodoo curse... RusDRW 155 Report post Posted March 28, 2009 (edited) The team is so good that its below-average players are stars on other teams. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. that is partially true... However, we do not usually notice when ex-wings have their bad games against us. Edited March 28, 2009 by RusDRW
55fan 5,133 Report post Posted March 28, 2009 The team is so good that its below-average players are stars on other teams. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. This has merit, and is probably the best difinitive answer, but I wouldn't rule out that bit of "they didn't want me- I'll show them" mentality. If the player had to leave because he "wasn't good enough", he has something to prove. If the player left because "something better came along", he has to prove he was better. If a player left due to some sort of contract or other dispute, he has to prove he would have been worth whatever his demands had been. Even if there was no animosity, the player is still playing with guys he played with and practiced with (and against), so he knows them and how they play better than someone who has just watched video or played against them a few times a year. Not to mention the competitive nature of guys. They usually turn it up an extra notch when playing against friends and enemies. Usually a former player is friends with most and maybe an enemy to a few. And then there's karma...

55fan 5,133 Report post Posted March 28, 2009 I didn't really mean it. lol. But in many cases it was true. Lang was the top scorer for the Habs before he was injured. Quincey would have been in the press box half of the time with us. Sure there are times when a player was on the down side of his career when he left, and hasn't come back to bite us in the butt. Also, some guys are let go as they are coming into their own (see Quincey and JoeyMac). They look better against us than they did for us because they have become better than they were when they played for us. I dread the loss of Hossa or Franzen this summer. Even if they part as friends, they still know our system and our players very, very well.
MannyK 16 Report post Posted March 28, 2009 (edited) Knuble. Avery. Kozlov. McDonald. Lang. Williams. Also don't forget Schneider got a goal with his first game for the Ducks vs. the Wings after he left in 07 And actually, didn't Bertuzzi as well? Barrie 900 Report post Posted March 28, 2009 Think of all the players that have become better since they signed with or were traded to Detroit, i.e. Cleary, Sammy, Maltby, Draper, Lilja, etc.. And don't forget all the low drafts picks, i.e. Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Holmstrom, Ericsson, etc..

I couldn't agree more I've seen it happen many times including last night Joey MacDonald played unbelieveable he was blessed becasue the Wings hit like 4 or 5 post last night but besides that Joey and the Islanders played very well. I thought the Wings did the best they could do on a night like last night when nothing seems to go in for ya. Let's regroup and get back to basics and play good quality Detroit Red Wings hockey. Go Wings!!

Go Wings!! No doubt about it. Can you imagine what kind of a career J.Mac will have if he coupld play that way the vast majority of the time? He was awesome. Its definitely a case of former Red Wing players getting up for a game against the Wings.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted March 29, 2009 The greatest example I can think of is Marty Lapointe. Granted, he made a lot of money when he left Detroit, so maybe it wasn't all a curse. But his play definitely went into the toilet.

StevieY9802 6 Report post Posted March 29, 2009 It goes the other way too though. Fedorov went down hill and his teams didn't make the playoffs before last year, which he was traded to so if he wasn't traded he wouldn't have made it. Lapointe was way over valued on the market in 01 and now hes not even in the league. Speaking of which where are all those people here saying holland HAD to pick him up last year? And then Bert and Schneider go to the Ducks are now both on different teams, Schneider on his 3rd team since leaving the Wings not even two years ago. Its definitely a case of former Red Wing players getting up for a game against the Wings. If Joey can play like that or even close to that he will have a very good career. If he stays consistent and works hard he'll do very well for whatever team he plays for.

Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted March 30, 2009 Fedorov always kinda blew against us.... Probable that the good games former players have against Detroit stand out more to me and everyone than the games where they don't do s***, but I can remember at least two games; one against Anaheim where he had two goals and two assists, and the other with C-bus where he had the shootout winner.
