4/2 GDT: Blues 5 at Red Wings 4

What an embarrassment.

I'm not usually one to single out goaltending, and often times our losses are a combination of the goaltender AND the defense (2/28 v. Nash and 8-2 vs. CLB) or sometimes just awful defense (1/12 @ Dal). Tonight, like the loss last Monday vs. CGY and Sunday was totally on the goaltending.

People can say 60 minutes this 60 minutes that...I thought our team was pretty good tonight, definitely good enough to win. They definitely had the better of the play for the last two periods, IMO. The Defense left Conklin with no chance on the first Backes goal, as it was an alert play by Winchester. The 2nd goal was AWFUL, Conklin totally overplaying his angle and getting caught embarassingly out of position.

The third goal was a miscommunication between E and Conklin, but Conklin is the one who blindly shoots the puck right to an StL player. AWFUL play and momentum killer.

I think the 4th goal is tough to pin on anyone...the wrist shot has to be given up by the PK and McDonald made a nice deflection, in that case you have to hit it hits you (like several of ours with Mason)...bad luck but still a save that can be made.

after all of this, the Wings battled back to tie the game. Make one or two big saves, and I can forgive this performance by Conklin...that the net this team gives you.

That 5th goal made me want to vomit. I haven't been that angry in a while. Its softness and the circumstance, especially given how hard we had battled to tie it twice...its just maddening. AHL goaltenders can make that save. Conklin has been decent most of the year, but he was awful and cost us the game tonight. This one isn't on the defense the effort level or our lack of heart. Conklin s*** the bed.

I personally think the wings should have goalie auditions. Michigan football has open tryouts for kickers, so why not the wings and a goalie? I am kidding, but it makes me think how much worse they could be.

Kudos to the Blues.

Again the Wings have only shown any kind of effort in the 3rd period. Maybe it used to get them through but not any more.

The D and obviously the goaltending are highly suspect. I'm no longer sure that they can just flick a switch on when the playoffs start. Although there is really no reason for them to kill themselves before the playoffs, there is no getting around how Ozzie and Conks are playing now.

At this rate they will NOT be rolling 4 lines in the playoffs if they want to have any chance of getting to the second round.

It's hard to be optimistic now.

wow, this team's a ******* joke. why don't we just ice 6 forwards every shift. we have no ******* defense and s*** goal tending. what's the difference. we're better at keeping the puck out of the ******* net with our goal tender pulled. this has been the worst ******* wings team defensively that i've ever seen. ******* pathetic!!!!!

with the way the wings are playing everybody scares me. all teams have to do is hold the wings to fewer than 4 goals per game and the wings will bury themselves. any team can do that 4 games of a 7 game series. this team is truly unbelievable.

I disagree entirely. This powerful offense was absent for a good part of the beginning of the game. Then, they decided to take a good lot of horrible shots and continue cycling around the outside rather than attempt to get closer to the net. Ironically, in the few times they tried it, look what happened! Then, the defense isn't taking their men, they're leaving them open, being lazy. People getting upset and throwing the season away (not you, but in general) don't quite get it that the team really doesn't have anything more to gain. The Pres trophy was lost against Nashville, now they don't have much to play for. If one is worried about the team now showing up, skip the next few games. Come back for the playoffs. Hopefully the team shows up then.

Ugh...its very frustrating to watch.

I'm currently in a medical school, I work two jobs and I also Teach and Volunteer on a Ambulance as a EMT...needless to say I dont have much free time.

So its very frustrating to put some time aside to watch these guys play, and then see them play like crap with little to no effort.

...Guess I should have done homework instead.

Had we lost this 4-3, we'd be all over Conk/Defense/Holland/Babs/Ozzie/my neighbour's cat for letting in 4 goals. Well, tonight, our goalie wasn't the only one on the ice who let in 4 goals.

Had we won this 6-5, Conk letting in 5 goals would have been a cause for minor concern.

I submit that the problem is the goals against vs goals for ratio.

Say "duh" if you wish, but as long as we're not losing 8-0 or 8-2, I'm not nearly as concerned.

That said, I hear Manny Legace knows his way around Detroit. (kidding)
