Kwame_Kilpatrick 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2009 i know most fans will remember sergei fedorov very well. he is in my humble opinion one of the most explosive and best wings ever. maybe he was pricy and a fancy player but he was one of the most clutch playoff guys ever for red wings and he had almost 1000 point for us. he was also a leader and probably the best player on 3 stanley cup clubs for us. no one has wore the number 91 since sergei the fancy. do u guys think wings will retire his number? i think so
Ms_Hockey 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2009 I really don't know. Have we retired numbers of players who didn't end their career with the Wings?
SoDakWing 8 Report post Posted April 27, 2009 I really don't know. Have we retired numbers of players who didn't end their career with the Wings? See: Gordie Howe. Played a year (his last of the NHL) with the Hartford Whalers

Ms_Hockey 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2009 Then maybe. He was a good player. Some people say he got cocky toward the end of his tenure with the Wings. Some people still boo him when he comes to the Joe, which just amazes me.
ComradeWasabi 109 Report post Posted April 27, 2009 I doubt it. Between the holdout and the way that him and the Red Wings parted ways, I don't see it happening. I'd love to be proven wrong, though.

StevieY'sguy 1 Report post Posted April 27, 2009 I was just thinking about whose numbers will be going in the rafters last night, here's what i came up with: Locks: Lidstrom, Osgood Probable: Shanahan, Zetterberg,Datsyuk (barring something unforseen happening to Z or Pav) Possible: Fedorov -The messy break up is the only thing that puts him in this category, Chelios-he played 7 seasons in Montreal and won a cup, 9 in Chicago and won 2 Norris Trophies, 9 in Detroit and won 2 Cups and will probably retire as a Wing....a very unique career, not many hall of famers split their career almost equally among 3 teams Longshots/too early to tell- Draper, had an A, won 4 cups and made an Olympic team, Franzen- if he can keep up his production for the majority of his 11 year deal

The fact he left or was it the fact he took the same money to leave and kicked Detroit and it's fan in the Metaphorical NUTS!!! I know he did do awesome things when he was here...if he wanted to leave he should of just said so..... Should we retire his number here? I'm on the fence with this one. Gordie played with Hartford to play with his kids who could fault him for that..... Feds left to leave. Why should we?

Statts 4 Report post Posted April 27, 2009 Fedorov is one of my all time favorite players. With that said, should we retire #91? Absolutely not. The only Wing that Should be considered in the future is Lidstrom.

weGotTheCup89 41 Report post Posted April 27, 2009 No. This conversation has happened several times.. There is a big difference on who will go to the hall of fame, and who will go in our rafters. Teams like Colorado can retire Ray Bourque if they want, but the only people on the team that will be retired are 1. Lidstrom and then 2. and 3. Pavel Datsyuk and Zetterberg might have a chance depending on how the next 10 years unfold.

The Wings have high standards for retiring numbers (unlike say the Avs ). No way Fedorov has his number in the rafters at the Joe or any new arena. No disrespect to his time with the Wings, it just won't happen....

Some say that Feds got cocky and left the team.. others say Feds was offered a contract that Detroit pulled on him when he went to sign it. If it was, in fact, the latter.. then it amazes me. StevieY'sguy 1 Report post Posted April 27, 2009 Osgood most certainly should get his number retired, i absolutely disagree.Look at the comparison between Ozzie and Sawchuk: Ozzie: He's won 3 cups with the wings, 2 cups as a playoff starter (and in '97 he played the majority of the regular season games) with another cup very possibly on the way. He's had 305 of his 389 (78.4% )wins in a red wings uniform, and 38 of his 49 (77.5%) shutouts in a Wings uniform Sawchuk: won 3 cups as a Wing, all as a starter, he had 361 of his 447 (80.7%) win in a cup uniform and 85 of his 103 (82.5%) shutouts in Detroit. Osgood will have just as many cups as a playoff starter and more total in a Wings uniform if the Wings win it this year. His win and shutout percentages as a wing are all very very close to Sawchuk's and he will almost certainly pass them if he plays a year or two more. He will be in the Hall, played most of his career in Detroit and is/was a fan favorite, it's a no brainer. Also, he did not go to Colorado and win a Cup, which would have been the equivalent of Sawchuk winning one in Toronto.

Jersey Wing 1,521 Report post Posted April 27, 2009 I'm of the mind when it comes to retiring numbers if you even have to debate the individual, it shouldn't be retired. I'd love to see both Fedorov and Shanahan's numbers retired but I don't think they should be. Lidstrom yes. Osgood yes. Ask me in 5-7 years about Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Shaman 713 Report post Posted April 27, 2009 I honestly doubt it, Feds was a great player, and put up a lot of points, but no way can he be mentioned in the same sentence as Yzerman or Howe when it comes to impact on Wings history.

My opinion's always been that hey, #s 1, 7, 9, 10, 12 all contributed to the four Cups in the 50s in one way or another. Why would it be so horrible to have 5, 13, 19, 30, 40 (assuming continued production from 13 and 40) retired from our four (and counting) Cups from 1997-present? That's not relaxing the standards--it's being consistent.
