Holland "Not Optimistic" about re-signing Hossa

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

He doesn't have the choice that is what you are missing!

Babcock can make suggestions but when push comes to shove it is Holland that makes the call.

Like I said Babs wanted Ericsson Leino and Helm last year he got none of the three, he can want Dany Heatley, Travis Moen, and Chris Neil and it means all of jack s***.

He may be saying, I would really like depth over Hossa, and Holland could be saying well we will see what happens.

He may be screaming like a monkey that he wants Hossa, it is not his decision.

So Holland decides ice-time now too?

I think Hossa will sign with the redwings eventually but only after seeing what offers contending teams can put forward, that does put the redwings in a sticky situation as they could lose all FA's but they have no choice. After Hossa see's the amount of $ contending teams offer Montreal, Vancouver and compares it to Detroit's offer he will most likely choose Detroit because of thier chances of winning. I believe Hossa just wants a fair contract and a good chance at winning at all but willing to make the financial sacrifice to make it happen. I highly doubt he would sign with a non-contender such as L.A or Minn seeing how badly he wants to win it during the prime of his career.

Then why in the hell are they offering him a contract and waiting on an answer? You act like there's not an offer on the table. It's not like they're going to say, "Nah! We changed our mind..." if Hossa comes to us and says yes. Is Holland lying in interviews when he says he'd be willing to move guys if the cap numbers right? Again, there's an offer on the table Hossa could still say yes to. Holland says he's willing to move people.

Who do you expect me to believe? Holland or Flips #1 fanboy on LGW.com???

Fine, we re-sign Hossa. Sorry to break it to you but Flip still aint going nowhere.

No but if Holland hands Babs 4 rookies (Who all have playoff experience) he is going to have to do something with them, especially with an aging Maltby and Draper on the team!

Babs will make the lines and minutes decisions, but not what he is handed.

Well, if they can find a way to make that happen, I'll hardly be unhappy. Despite what you probably think, I'm hardly a Flip-hater. I think many here overrate him, but I think he's fine for what his role is. But I still think they're going to have a very difficult time keeping him if we sign Hossa.

I honestly think Babs would be happy to finally have those guys. They'll get a lot more experience through 82 games on the big club and be all the more ready to contribute in the playoffs next year.

Babcock is not oblivious to the fact that a cap exists now either...

I guess Holland and Babcock overrate him too.

People need to stop including Abdelkader on their depth-charts. Holland has already said Abdelkader is going to spend one more year in the minors. Thus there needs to be another signing. Realistically this will be a cheap one like Yelle or Ellis or somebody like that.

It would seem Hossa is interested in checking out what other teams have to offer, yet because we haven't traded away his rights yet, it would seem he hasn't completely thrown the offer out the window yet. I imagine he will go to free agency knowing that our offer is still up, and compare the offers and past success from teams that will court him to what the Wings can provide. Who knows? Maybe the only competitive teams can offer him less than we can, and maybe the bad teams are going to be the only ones that offer him what he wants.

Homer alone will not cover a 4.5 million dollar Hossa hit, because homer and lebda gone only leaves 0.3 million left on cap, not enough to actually sign somebody to replace homer. That being said the only two movable forwards are Cleary and Filppula.

Edit: Both of which are hard to see go. Then again its hard to see Hossa go. Its a s***ty offseason for Wings fans, because we are saying good bye to a lot of players.

Well know we're beginning to see why Penguin fans hate him I guess. Make up your mind man!

Would any team even be interested in buying the rights of a player at this point? Not many hours left until free agency.

I agree. I think they'll bring some much needed energy, enthusiasm, and all 'round general havoc. No more sleeping thru the first 2 and a half periods.

I think if Hossa tests the market that the Wings take their offer off of the table and start going after free agents to fill the holes they have. This team cannot wait any longer for Hossa. If Hossa tests the market, let him walk.

I totally agree. We saw what happened a few years ago when Holland waited for Shanahan to take his sweet time after July 1st.

I have to say that I agree very much with that statement. I want Hossa back I can't stress that enough but there is no reason why the Wings should keep that offer on the table and wait for him to decide. I say Hossa's deadline is Wednesday at 11:59 to make up his mind about what he is going to do. No way should Holland keep waiting and waiting for Hossa he needs to give them a definite answer ASAP.

Hopefully Hossa will stay but we have to worry about this team and what the Wings are going to do to make themselves better if Hossa wants to come along on the ride than great but Holland deserves and answer soon.

Holland is loyal to his players who have won Cups for him. Holmstrom is not going anywhere. Plus Holmstrom has taken less than his market value in the pre-Cap era in his prime years. Holland will not forget that. He rewards loyalty. It's part of which makes the Red Wings a first class organization and why players want to stay here and come here. The more I think about it the more I do not see Hossa staying here. I'm with Holland. I'm fine either way.

Exactly what I've been thinking, but someone would have to go and I don't think it would be Filppula.

I don't think i would be willing to see either cleary or filppula go in favor of Hossa. I honestly think filppula will eventually become a vital part of our team.

When half over half our guys were injured or Grand Rapids Griffins. That's just a step above a home run in a little league field.

And he can't score goals. We need those to win. Hossa scores goals. Hudler and Sammy are better goal scorers than Flip.

We need goals, plain and simple. Flip is not a goal scorer.

Actually Flip finished tied for 4th in assists in the playoffs AMONG ALL PLAYERS.

Malkin 22

Crosby 16

Getzlaff 14

Kunitz, Flip, and Z 13

This is pretty good company to be in.

As far as goal scoring, he is barely a 20 goal scorer but I'm ok with that if he can finish tied for 4th overall in assists in the playoffs.

I don't agree. You have to remember the money that we have offered Hossa is borrowed money. Just like all that money that Obama borrowed from our grandchildren so that he could keep the unemployment rate at 7%. But I digress.

If Holland isn't going to get Hossa, he doesn't have to dump Hudler or trade away a guy like Flip.

I think that he will wait for Hossa and if he doesn't get him, he will pick up the table scraps. I don't see him going after any 4M+guys.

Uhh, how 'bout THE REST OF HIS FRIKIN LIFE COULD VERY WELL DEPEND ON THIS VERY DECISION!

Holland knows that. Leaving 2 to 4 million dollars on the table a year for possibly 10 years is always a big decision no matter who you are or how wealthy you are. Thats quite a sacrifice. There are a lot of heavy things to consider here. And now he knows all too well that other teams are very capable of winning the Stanley Cup, not just Detroit.

And let me tell you, Vancouver is a very cool place to live. Its probably my favorite city in all of North America. Montreal would be a riot to live in for a few years, as would be many cities. Hell, Pittsburgh is a cool place to live.

I don't know why you guys can't grasp the magnitude of the decision Marian Hossa is faced with. Holland knows that, and he is playing it just right. Its up to Hossa and you can't blame him for considering all options.

If he were drafted by the Detroit Red Wings, things would be very different. But he wasn't. He can never be a life long Red Wing. There will never be quite that bond. Lidstrom, Datsyuk, and Zberg are the Lifers with the A tier contracts. A perfect storm opportunity openned up for Rafalski with Schnieds and his contract leaving. Hossa is an outsider late to the table, and therefore there is only money left over for a B tier contract, even though he is an A tier player. Can you blame him for not wanting to be that far down the buffet line getting a smaller plate of food when he can go somewhere else and get the big piece of chicken? No.
