BigWillieStyle 662 Report post Posted August 29, 2009 Can't believe that they left off a guy like Bertuzzi. Now that he's a Wing, his classiness has increased tenfold. Probably broke the class-o-meter when they measured him.
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted August 29, 2009 Say whatever you want too, Jarome is a classy guy. On the ice? Not a chance, he hates to lose, that drive makes him do what he does. I love it, Iginla does whatever it takes to win. (But I did love Lidstrom standing up to him and laughing at him 07, thats the Wings fan in me?)

Selanne Rafalski Brind'Amour Conroy Modano McDonald Bouwmeester Havlat Gaborik Two other classy players we'll all see in the future are Matt Duchene and Cody Hodgson. numberthirtynine 0 Report post Posted August 29, 2009 Iginla, Neidermayer and Kariya need to be taken off that list. Neidermayer was part of that Ducks goon crew and mad eno bones about it. He took cheap shot and was just like every other idiot Duck. Still is. I can't belive some people defend that team with a straight face. Oha nd that elbow to Datsyuk was LOW. You're a piece of s*** Scott, go get injured for all I care. Iginla has shown his true colors. He's one of a kind, really, because he puts on a hell of a show everywhere else but his temper just turns him into an idiot. Always has. Why do we ignore this? Because we as hockey fans want to? Ugghh the guy's a baby. And Kariya because he's always eyeing the refs, trying to be cheap. Non stop. I think it was Chelli or Roenick who said, and I agree, he ruins it for everyone else. And piss on HNIC, always trying to play middle ground for the Canadian teams. That Lebda hit was fine. Perfectly clean. Hell if you want classy players, put most of our roster on there. I don't care if I look like a homer, that's damn well what we are-the classiest, most sportsmanlike team in hockey. Our leader is a perfect role model, we don't start s*** unless it's maybe a couple of guys like Maltby or something and we only fight back when we need to defend ourselevs. We're not cheap, goons or anything like that. And it goes up through the coachign staff to the front office. The exact opposite of a team like Anaheim. Which was why it felt so great to beat those idiots. Probably broke the class-o-meter when they measured him. I don't get replies like this. These types of comments are what makes people scared to speak well of their team no matter how true-because there seems to be this subtle, all seeing eye of "anti-homerism" in the air at all times. Like no one is allowed to say anything pro-Detroit on a Detroit msg board. And it's not just this one reply, I see this quite a bit. This mean sarcasm against anyone willing to make a nice comment about a Red Wing. Edited August 29, 2009 by numberthirtynine
55fan 5,133 Report post Posted August 29, 2009 I would have trouble putting Shanahan on that list knowing the Craig Janey incident and what happened with that Blues team. Agreed. (Am I the only one who read that as Jenny Craig? Yeah, I just woke up, but I'm not that out of it, am I?) I would put him on a list of great players in the past. A list of great leaders. A list of men who promote the game of hockey well... Darn near any compliment you can give the guy as a player, but that incident does kill "classy". This is not to say that I am overlooking all that he has done, and I still want him for Commish when he retires. There are just some situations where classy guys keep it zipped and wait until the woman is free to be with them.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted August 29, 2009 It sounds like in most people's minds, classy player equals non-fighter or complete ***** who doesn't even throw bodychecks. I mean it is possible for tough players to also be classy.
Guest micah Report post Posted August 30, 2009 To me, the top 10 classiest NHLers are the 10 players who give the highest % of their time and income to the less fortunate. That's classy. Following the rules on the ice? Who on earth cares about that, when we're talking about class? Low PIMs and a dozen Lady Bings doesn't make a guy classy, his honesty, selflessness and service to others does.
wingnut40 176 Report post Posted August 30, 2009 The only time I've ever seen Nick pissed off, at least he look pissed from what you can see of his face. Konnan511 1,736 Report post Posted August 30, 2009 Iginla seems like a douchbag on the ice, but I've heard stories that he's really nice off it. IDK, I don't like him. This. Iginal is a total D-Bag on the ice, but one of the best off the ice. Watching that video of the cross check on Schneid was funny, I was unaware Matty was such a great diver. That butt-end looked worst than that cross-check. Needs-a-vacation should not be on that list and just because Datsyuk doesn't get penalties and doesn't fight doesn't mean he is the holy grail of classy, for all we know all he does is rip into the opponents in some squirrely russian language. Low PIMs and a dozen Lady Bings doesn't make a guy classy, his honesty, selflessness and service to others does. On ice conduct is important for so many reasons I can't even bother to get into them all. One being that dirty play can injure a fellow player and end his career, thus altering his ability to be classy by your definitions off the ice. And it'll take some seriously drunken reaching to suggest Datsyuk isn't a total class act. Because he obviously is. And about Iginla, I don't care how big the smile is he gives you when he's not in skates. On the ice, he's a punk *****. He's a Canadian kid so the media excuses it the way they did with Gary f***in idiot Roberts-they just call it passion/desire/willingness to win, or some other lame duck justification. If he was a Euro, Cherry and the rest of the world would hate him. Think about it... ...not many people who excuse Iginla's behavior, excused Alfreddsson for shooting a puck at a Duck in an uncalled for scenario. Then, it was immature and dirty. Throw a fit when you're a CDN playing for a beloved CDN team? It's just passion! Throw a fit when you're playing for a team no one cares about, and you weren't born in North America? You're a dirty punk. Gotta love the collective NHL media. Edited August 30, 2009 by numberthirtynine

Guest micah Report post Posted August 30, 2009 This is a classic picture! Agreed, I have an 8x10 of that shot. I love the "don't kill him, Iggy!" look on Zetterberg's face as he tries to hole Iginla back. Thankfully, Iginla is so classy that he doesn't kill Lidstrom with his bare hands, even though he certainly could.
Barrie 900 Report post Posted August 30, 2009 I can't stand Iginla! The guy is always humble, "ah shucks", and well spoken off the ice, but turns insane on it. I'm really going to have a tough time cheering for team Canada at the Olympics. The team is going to be loaded with players I don't like and have been rooting against for many years (Iginla, Cindy, Thornton, Neidermayer, Pronger, Getzlaf, Phaneuf, Perry, Smyth, Toews, Fleury, and Staal)... I'll be neural, cheer for Sweden, or just not watch.

Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted August 30, 2009 I wasn't aware Nick got pissed off. No matter the situation, he always seems so even-keeled out there - like he's got ice water running in his veins. Nick always seemed like Steve in that respect. I don't remember if Steve was real mouthy out there early in his career but when I started following the team in the early 90s, he seemed sedate. Not that he wasn't fired up, just that he'd glare at you or something and that was his way of saying "back off, assface."

numberthirtynine 0 Report post Posted August 30, 2009 I don't recall the Canadian media ever giving Claude Lemieux, Dale Hunter, Sean Avery, Todd Bertuzzi, Marty McSorley, etc, etc free passes nor did Grapes lay off these guys either. Personally I like both Roberts, and Iginla; both play the game with their heart on their sleeve. IMO the Wings could use of few of these types. That doesn't automatically excuse the justifications made for other hissy fit throwers. It just means they're not completely stupid, which I'm sorry, won't win awards from me. You can play with passion and drive and heart and intensity without being a ******* idiot.

The NHL has alot of good clean fighters. It's funny isn't it? Non NHL fans always see fighting as the problem when fighting really is the opposite of the problem-there's an unwritten code among them to stop if someone's seriously hurt, to agree to a scrap, and the goal isn't to kill the other guy, there are so many other reasons that are just team related. The real problem is our own media justifying cowardly behavior that could injure a helpless player or someone who isn't prepared for it. But as is the standard, we only come down on them once someone gets hurt. If they don't get hurt, f*** it, it's just passion!
