I'm going decidedly unscientific with my vote. It's a tossup for me between AO, Datsyuk and Crosby. I hate Crosby, so he's out. I am clearly a biased fan for Datsyuk, so I'm going with an anti-bias bias and voting for AO.

There is no comparison. Datsyuk plays offense AND defense hence the last two Selke trophies sitting on his mantle.

Datsyuk is the better defensive player by a fair margin....2 Selkes and higher plus minuses clearly prove that; but Crosby is also a better offensive player by a fair margin... as his 3 100 point seasons and much higher career points per game ratio prove. However, Crosby is still an above average defensive player who is getting better on that end every year and Datsyuk is an obviously a fantastic offensive player so they are both very complete players. However, my personal definition of the best player is who would i take to build a franchise around, which i realize other people's definition is not....For my reasons i look for leadership, abilitiy to handle pressure, excelling in the playoffs, as well as faceoffs, offense, defense, skating ability, passing, and the ability to make the players around them better. When taking all of these categories into consideration, i believe that based on my definition of "the best player in the game" then the best player is clearly Crosby

Okay voting is done for the top player and the results are as follows:

Ovechkin came in the top spot with 12 votes (35%). Lidstrom came in second with 7 votes (20%), Dats in 3rd with 6 votes (18%), Crosby in 4th with 5 votes (15%) and Broduer, Zetterberg, Downey and Getzlaf trailed in last with 1 vote each (3%)

That's a total of 34 votes.

For the top 30 votes, Ovechkin, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, and Crosby all received one less vote.

note: percentages all rounded up.

1) Ovechkin

Now to begin voting on the second part: Besides Ovechkin, who do you feel is the best player in the nhl?

You have about 24 hours to cast your vote. Any votes for Ovechkin will be thrown away. Also, can people bold their answers from now on to make counting votes easier? There were a couple instances in the first round that a comment seemed pretty ambiguous. Finally, I'm wondering whether the mods would be willing to edit the subtitle of the thread to accommodate what round we're currently in (currently voting on 2nd) to keep people from voting on rounds that have already ended. If this is too much trouble don't worry about it.

And I'll start things off with voting for Datsyuk

Nicklas Lidstrom.

If you have a group of players, and Lidstrom's name is included, you can automatically rank Lidstrom as the best overall player based on current ability. He is simply the best player in the world. There's no other way to put it.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Lids has my vote as well
