numberthirtynine 0 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 This is just so Osgood can steal his mask. But really, if he signs, welcome to the AHL. This guy won't take Jimmy's spot. Jimmy can't go back to GR, so I find it highly unlikely we're going to let him go or even trade him in favor of DAN CLOUTIER fo all people. We are the Red Wings after all, we wouldn't be this successful if we made decisions like that.
GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 Cloutier won't even be around in a month from now. If Jimmy Howard gets outplayed by Cloutier, it was never meant to be for Howard in the NHL.
numberthirtynine 0 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 I doubt one try out camp, no matter how well played by Cloutier, would ever be enough to take a job from Howard, considering the circumstances surrounding the whole thing.

REDHASEK 0 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 (edited) That's what you all said about Mike V. #29 our Goail back in 1997, remember he couldn't stop a beach ball all season long and Scotty put him in the 97 playoffs and he won the cup for Detroit. I think this is going to be like 1997 where Dan C. Does the same thing. And then comes to play great and wins the Cup for us this year lets hope so. Anyways he's better then having that washed up Back up Goail Howard in net! Edited September 5, 2009 by REDHASEK
Lamothe 5 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 Anyways he's better then having that washed up Back up Goail Howard in net! I'm not quite sure how its possible for one to be washed up with only 9 NHL games played at his old age of 25. Washed up, to me, sounds something more like Curtis Joseph at age 42. I'd hesitate saying Dan Cloutier is washed up at the moment, however I won't hesitate saying that if some team doesn't pick him up this year that there is a good posibility he will be. I doubt that team will be Detroit.
Andy Pred 48 337 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 Cloutier earns a 2 way deal with GR and Toledo is all I can see happening at best for him. If I were Howard I would be more worried about Larsson at camp.
10 Minute Misconduct 104 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 Cloutier was a pretty good goalie. He just had bad playoffs, on bad Vancouver Canuck teams. It's like one person says "omg not Cloutier", and the rest pile on. That's pretty much what it is with all the Cloutier hate, here and on other boards. Career .899 SV% and 2.77 GAA in regular season competition. He was never a good goaltender.

As already stated, it's hard to be washed up when you haven't even played a full NHL season and you are only in your mid-twenties. And from what I read, Cloutier asked for a tryout, he wasn't being heavily sought. If he does somehow manage to be all the odds stacked against him to make the team, (1) Howard was never set to go to the NHL from the start, (2) great for Cloutier, and (3) more power to him. I highly doubt much will come from this.

Don't forget he washed out of LA too, when they were desperate for a starting goalie. The bar was set incredibly low and he couldn't win the job. And Vancouver had a few pretty good teams the years Cloutier was there. This isn't based on a limited sample. He's just never shown himself to be a standout goaltender at the NHL level. The only thing Cloutier has to offer that the Wings need is decent fighting ability. And that's sad for both parties. Donaldjr2448 43 Report post Posted September 6, 2009 I'm not sure what to think about this! But what the heck, if he plays lights out, then maybe we give him a shot, if not no big deal! If this is to add competition for Howard and he doesn't beat out Cloutier, then I would have to think Jimmy Howard will probably be waived. I say waived because we have Larsson and Pearce that deserve a shot in the AHL and I think Howard has been given all the chances in the world to improve and simply has not gotten any better in GR!! Personally, I think Howard will beat out Cloutier! Just my 2 cents!
ShanahanMan 473 Report post Posted September 6, 2009 Jeez.....Howard or Dan.......thats a tough one. After his Vancouver days, Cloutier hasn't been able to stop a freakin beach ball if it came right at him. And Howard, well......I really haven't seen his "brilliance" that the Wings organization has gone on about. We've put a lot of money and effort into him and if doesn't shine this season, I say it's time to part ways. The times he's been brought up to pro's haven't been that impressive in the least. russianswede919293 95 Report post Posted September 6, 2009 In my opinion this is a whatever move. I think if it works out cool, if not it doesn't matter. Lamothe 5 Report post Posted September 6, 2009 The one thing that does worry me is that if Ozzy gets hurt we are running off of ALL ROOKIE goaltending. That should only be a problem if Osgood went down for an extended period (20-30 games +). Howard will get enough time in his first few games to get the deal, and I have faith in him that he can carry the load. I'd assume Larsson would be recalled, and would only see a few games. It may effect our overall standings, but wouldn't put us out of the playoff race. Every time I've seen Howard play, I've been satisfied with him. Yes, he's made some young mistakes. However, I haven't ever seen him fall on his face. His NHL record thus far isn't amazing, but he lost games 2-1 and 3-2, save for one I believe. Its not like teams were running him out of the net. We COULD always bring back Marc Lamothe... Not really.

Hi there! Speaking as someone that has watched Howard for the last few years here in GR, I can say that you obviously HAVEN'T been watching him for the last few years. Howie has improved almost every game he has played for the Griffins. He's not the guy that you saw get beat playing behind a bunch of injury replacements. Let J-Ho get into a game with the NHL Wings agains an NHL team (instead of the Detroit Griffins squad he's been behind recently when playing an NHL game) and you will see that he is indeed an NHL ready goalie. Cloutier is here so that other teams will see him and hopefully sign him. That's all. We don't even have any room for him in the AHL, with McCollum coming up.
