puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted December 4, 2009 well, with all the injuries, I tend to give them a lot of rope (sorry, Manny)... but he's right. They're better than this, and the fact that we only have two D men left out there worth a nickel shouldn't stop the rest of them from working harder than they have. I've thought for the last three or four games that the effort was lacking. I love the Wings, but I watch other teams' games, too. The difference in effort and speed is shocking, aside from the occasional burst of fabulousness from Z or Bert or Dats. Pasha needs to get selfish and start shooting instead of setting others up who don't finish. Anyone miss Sammy yet? I do.
StormJH1 231 Report post Posted December 4, 2009 That game was terrible to watch. One of the worst Wings losses I can remember. Not only a subpar opponent, but a rookie goalie with terrible numbers, yet WE were the team that looked back on our heels. I understand that we have the 4 injuries (plus a 5th in Rafalski day-to-day) and that this is a rough stretch. But the whole strength of this organization is supposed to be that we play a style of hockey (puck possession, poise, etc.) that is taught from the stars to the healthy scratches and down through Grand Rapids. Datysuk and Zetterberg need help, but as critical of Hossa as people are for his playoff play (at which point his shoulder was basically destroyed), people forget that there were long stretches of 08-09 where the other scorers disappeared like this, and Hossa basically carried the team. Having a 3rd defensive combo of Lebda & Kindl (just up from the minors) and Derek Meech as a 4th defenseman scares the s*** out of me. Our team got physically manhandled, the defenseman played terrible (and shot more at our goalie than the opposing goalie), and I saw no resemblance of the puck-control team that I've been accustomed to watching in front of a home crowd. If we have to have to limp into the playoffs this year, I can live with that, but I hope we don't plan on doing it like that.
Hack & Whack Rule! 160 Report post Posted December 4, 2009 It was an absolutely brutal game to watch. I was so many red uniforms laying on the ice last night, that I thought they were having structured nap time. Guys were getting knocked around, beat to the puck, they were giving up battles and turning over too many pucks in both ends. Babs is right, they are better than this. I realize that the injuries shakes things up, but individual efforts should still be a part of the game.
servo 15 Report post Posted December 4, 2009 Sammy leaving hasn't resulted in our skid. I really really miss Hudler. Watching these games have really made me appreciate what we had in 2007. I'm sure they have to be worse to play in for guys like Drapper, Lids, Pav, Homer, Z, Maltby, Ozzy etc. Babs will have to do something at this point. We really need Flip, Eaves, Williams, Kronwall and Franzen back. I'm really really apprehensive about missing the playoffs.
Guest ZetterbergFourty Report post Posted December 4, 2009 They resembled an AHL team to me. Not very impressive at all. They were supposed to win easily in this game considering they were 19-0-4 against Edmonton in the last 23 meetings at the Joe. The injury bug is absloutely destroying this season. They oughta at least know how to play hockey though even though there are some pieces missing.

Stiffy 0 Report post Posted December 4, 2009 So what exactly is Babs doing to get up the work ethic? I am serious. Is complaining to the press it?
Jake Ryan 1 Report post Posted December 4, 2009 anyone notice that the oilers are really really fast or are the wings just slow Don't say this. You could get banned. Holmstrom plays at the speed of a 9 year old, but you can't say that he's slow. You have to call him a "demolition skater" or "heavy skater" or something like that. When we're getting torched all over the place and Holmstrom is standing at the blueline waiting for an outlet pass, that's good for the team. Just stick your fist in the air and yell "HOMERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!" at the top of your lungs. It's what everyone does around here.

You just go around blaming all the troubles of this team on Holmstrom and get pissy when people don't agree with you. You have this wonderful dream world where you get to decide what each player should be getting paid or you would send half them to Grand Rapids. You go on in your posts stomping Homer like he should be almost a point a game, and that just ain't gonna happen. He's leading the team in goals right now, so what's the problem? Should he be leading in assists and blocked shots too? Go back to Letsgopens.com.

Grim 5 Report post Posted December 4, 2009 Babs is an overrated coach. The team has been slipping defensively for the past few years, despite the recent Cup win. Team Canada will regret picking this guy as their head coach.

Team Canada will regret picking this guy as their head coach. no i dont think hes overrated. our defense in 2008 was good then mccrimon came in. now i hate throwing a coach under the bus like that but come on how is it that the defense gets worse when he gets here and doesnt get better even with the same d-men out there
Carman 387 Report post Posted December 5, 2009 Babcock is not to blame, he is the best coach in the league and you only blame the coach when there is nothing left to blame. The blame lies on Lidstrom sucking, Datsyuk underachieving and injuries. And before anyone blasts me for bagging on Lidstrom. HE IS 66TH IS DEFENSIVE SCORING. BROOKS MOTHERF*^*&^( ORPIK HAS MORE POINTS. Yep.

Our PK and defense both took a nosedive when McCrimmon joined the coaching team. And what is he in charge of? Oh, what a coincidence - THE PK AND THE DEFENSE. The man needs to go. It's a wonder we even made it back to the finals last year with him behind the bench.

BROOKS MOTHERF*^*&^( ORPIK HAS MORE POINTS. Yep. One could argue that it's Babcock's responsibility to motivate Datsyuk and Lidstrom. Lidstrom may very well be on a fast decline. I prefer to believe that he is storing up for a huge playoff explosion... unfortunately we probably won't get there unless he starts warming up. I cut Lidstrom a lot more slack than Datsyuk because of his age. I believe Datsyuk's issue(s) fall squarely in his realm though. It's his job to motivate him properly, imo. LeftWinger 5,153 Report post Posted December 5, 2009 I was there, it was totally brutal to watch. Thank goodness for the Olympia Room and the Pizza Row! oh and for The Post afterwards! Game was sucky. Team looked out of sync, no effort, WAY too many passess, trying to look too pretty. It's been on a decline since Yzerman left. Sure we won in 08, but even in that year, we won a lot of games with great third period efforts after bewing outplayed for the first two. Lets just cross our fingers for the injury bug to end and that we make the playoffs and rekindle some magic! I agree all this falls right on the head and shoulders of Babcock. Anyone know what Larionov and Festisov are doing these days?
