If only everyone played like Helm

I don't know what to say about last night, we had lots of chances but lost anyway. So, I will bring up something from the last Col/Det meeting. What a save by Helm. If everyone put as much effort in (defensively AND offensively) we would be a lock for the playoffs.

If you missed his amazing save, check it out. I love this guy he really works hard.

I agree with you. There is just a level of tenacity that, save Helm and on occasion a few others, this team hasn't reached yet. But at the moment, the place it is really needed is the PP. Our PP is too passive. Look at the 4on3 the Wings had last night as a perfect example. No one wants to shoot. And the worse part is, they overpass and then when they finally do attempt a shot, usually right as the PP is expiring, they either miss the net entirely or its from a horrendous angle anyways, so why dick around.

The best part about Helm is he is busting tail every place and there seems to be little or no BS to his game. He plays with a desperation to make something good happen and its pretty inspiring to watch. Wings need more of Helm.

That was an amazing save. I love the effort he plays with and the energy he brings to the team.

But it's also becoming more and more obvious that there are many parts of his game he needs to improve if he's ever going to be more than a 4th liner (on a healthy red wings team).

Work ethic like his is hard to find, which is kind of surprising given all the money and potential for more. Maybe money isn't enough and it takes loving the game? However, he isn't the only one. Pavs and Hank of course, but Cleary is a guy who has always stood out, to me anyway, for his hustle. Flip is as energetic as a playoff player as you could ask for. Watch some 90's era video of the Grind Line and you will see total energy on every shift. Super stars are important of course, but every post season it is these kind of 3rd-4th line energy guys who make things happen. We might wish he had better hands, but that may come. For now, I'll take that speed and hustle.

I understand that Helm isn't the most talented player on the team. My point is, if everyone played with as much energy and passion as he does we would be winning way more games.

He plays to his full potential, which may not be as high as some other player's potentials, but if they played to their full potential we wouldn't be in 9th place.

I get what you're saying, but we aren't winning way more games because we don't have enough talent uninjured right now. We have a first line and basically three fourth lines. I'm amazed we've won this many games and even more impressed we've won this many games with a rookie goalie.

You might want to watch a little harder. Helm wouldn't pass to an open team member if it ment a million dollars. I don't know how many odd man rushes I've watched where he drives past the net and tries to stuff it in the other side rather then pass. Fast, yes. Hard worker, most of the time. Team player, no.

The funny thing about Helm is that he hasn't had a good linemate since he got to the NHL. I can't wait until the Red Wings figure out that Helm DOES have offensive skills and can use them if he has a good player on his line.

I was thinking that last night, he always seems to play hard. My favorite was his penalty kill in the playoffs last year. He made that PP his *****. He's great defensively and can score some clutch goals. I can't wait til he gets more ice time and more experience. He's pretty much a beast.

I've been saying this about him since last year's playoffs.

If every player played as hard as him on every shift, we'd win the Cup every year.

I knew you were going to say that. Mostly because all throughout last year's playoffs you said after a couple of losses iirc.

I think being a scorer is different though. You play more minutes and you have to tread the fine line of yin & yang as in know when to be aggressive and when to be patient and let the game come to you.

So all the Red Wing scouts, Kenny, Stevie, the entire GR coaching staff, the entire Red Wings coaching staff, Ken and Mickey, Gary Thorne and Bill Clement on my NHL10 game... EVERYBODY... has overlooked Helm's offensive dominance except you.

He's been given his chances with good line mates. He may develop great hands someday. Just not yet.

IMO, of all the new guys helm has earned his spot the most. he plays HARD every shift, you always know when he is on the ice hitting left and right, chasing down pucks he shouldnt have to chase down, winning battles along the boards getting the puck to the middle or the net. he is very good at protecting the puck along the boards, i think he just needs to put on a little weight to win battles in open ice, and work on his shot.

What the hell are you watching????......he is constantly digging it out of the corners & behind the net & dumping it in front for excellent scoring chances!

I agree. He has 3 goals in 32 games right now, but if he was with Datsyuk I'm certain he would be leading the league in goals. Helm must've played a mean prank on Babcock to deserve 3rd line minutes with pylons.

Helm has very few offensive instincts. He might be a cleary type who does okay offensively (that said, he won't do as well as cleary does) simply through hard work, but all I see him being a new Draper, except faster. A solid third liner, but never a second liner.
