Ah, good points.. Z on ltir would make sense but hopefully he doesn't need it. It would be so bittersweet though

At this point I think it's almost 100% certain that Z will be on LTIR when the NHL picks up again.

Weiss has pretty much missed two full seasons with different, but serious injuries. Does anyone really think he's going to come back and dominate?

Not dominate but I think he's the wings' "x factor" (or at least one of them) after the Olympic break.. we need solid play from him.

Has anyone heard anything about Weiss lately? I'm curious how Plymouth is going..

I agree. With Z potentially out long term, if this team is going to go anywhere, it needs a productive push from Weiss here.

I'll believe it when I see it. And not just for one game or two...

We all know the whole "Weiss needs 20 games to get back in game shape" bs ... We can't rely on him doing anything, the kids we have going are a million times better I think I seen enough of him.

Well the kids can't carry the team. We absolutely need franzen and Weiss in the mix. With Weiss healthy he should be producing well enough to carry the second line while Datsyuk carries the first.

Franzen Datsyuk Abby

Nyquist Weiss alfie

Tatar sheahan jurco

Miller helm eaves

Or franzen Datsyuk helm

So quick to judge man, the guy signed a four year deal and had hernia issues during the first half. Cut him a little slack maybe and judge him when he's actually healthy and can be the kind of player he was signed for.

I know its frustrating, and I would have rather seen the money spent elsewhere, but now that he's here at least let's give him a chance to prove what he can do.

SHHHH!!! Weiss isn't on the unofficial 'Players it is Acceptable to Speak Negatively About on LGW' list!

Did you not get that memo?

It's just most of us are not so trigger happy and are willing to see what he can do when he's actually healthy considering how consistently good he's been his whole career.

Yeah. I know.

It’s just that... everyone comes to Weiss’s defense so quickly on here. It’s as if his terrible season is acceptable. Sure, there’s hope that he’ll return to form and be an asset for the team (and I definitely share it). But, that hasn’t happened yet. All we have so far from Weiss is far less than ‘not meeting expectations.’ So far, Weiss has been a horrendous acquisition. And people act like it is a given that he’s going to turn it around. I hope he does too. It just seems hypocritical to me to give him the benefit of the doubt on that when I don’t think that other players get and/or would get that same treatment here on LGW.

I think playing injured half the year while trying to learn a new system gives him a little benefit of the doubt credit.. I don't think the acquisition is judgeable until most of the way through next season. hope he turns it around for sure.

You say "Yeah I know" and then continue to say that. Which doesn't make a lot of sense.

As has been stated by many... he gets the benefit of the doubt because of his body of work. He didn't just magically become a non-factor.

Sure, I agree.

So, do you not think Samuelsson should have been treated the same way last season? He wasn’t. Hardly anyone came to his defense when he was trashed incessantly even though he missed practically all of the season due to injuries that were similarly ‘not his fault.’

I’m sorry if I confused you. I will try to clarify: I meant ‘Yeah. I know.’ as in, ‘I know that this is the line of defense that is generally given.’ And, it’s not that I disagree with it in the case of Weiss. As I said, I think/hope that Weiss at least has a good chance of returning to form also. And, of course, I agree that the injuries are not his fault.

I’ll get away from the Samuelsson example here since I seem to be the only one that seems similarities between Samuelsson last year and Weiss this year… So, a similar player when it comes to body of work.... Johan Franzen. Place Franzen in Weiss's current position and I don't think he would have all of these people staunchly coming to his defense. I think he would, instead, gain full LGW 'whipping boy' status.

Maybe using numbers will make it easier for you. Weiss has 673 professional games played. He's played 26 of them as a member of the Red Wings. That's about 4% of his career. Do you think judging a player's ability to perform their job, based on 4% of their work experience is going to be accurate? Will it be fair?

Can you say that you have sucked at your job for less than 4% of your career? I know I can't.

I can't speak for everyone but I wasn't pissed at Sammy last year for being injured, so much as I was pissed at Holland for signing him. And I was pissed about the signing mostly because I didn't think Sammy had anything left in the tank that our prospects couldn't beat. Last year there was no way to validate my hypothesis so I didn't really have any beef . This year Sammy has been abysmal despite being healthy; much worse than I was even expecting. All in all I think the flak Sammuelson gets is warranted.

Weiss has also sucked this year, although it seems like he's been trying to adapt to being a Red Wing with a sports hernia (or whatever he had, I'm too lazy to fact check). Taking that into consideration, the bad numbers seem somewhat justified. The guy is in the prime of his career and has a proven record of being successful so I'm willing to see what he can do to close out this season with a (hopefully now) healthy body and get us into the playoffs before I cast any judgment.

Haha! Gee, thanks for putting it into numbers for me - that's so much clearer!

I am not trying to trash Weiss. I do not agree with trashing Weiss. I don't think Weiss should be judged based on 4% of his career. I give him the benefit of the doubt as well. I will be rooting for him to turn it around as much as any of you will be when he plays again. I am only using his situation to attempt to make a point, but apparently I am failing since everyone seems to be taking it in a different way that I am intending.

You all seem to be taking me to be saying that I think Weiss should receive the same treatment on LGW that Samuelsson or Franzen (or insert player Kindl/Smith/Cleary/Bert/etc.) get. Quite the opposite, I am saying (or trying to say) that the treatment that Weiss is getting is a good thing.... but that I do not think that most of the other players get the same treatment on LGW. That's the part I take issue with.

So, take how you were thinking that I was unjustly judging Weiss. That is how I feel that some/several Red Wings players besides Weiss are judged. And, similarly to how you responded to me, I do not agree with it. I do apologize for the difficulty/miscommunication.

Excuse me, ladies, I hate to interrupt, but have any of you seen an "injury update" thread? I could have sworn it was right here a minute ago...

no I do not. fact, Samuelssons point totals from season to season were very inconsistent, and we already knew how lazy he could be from his time previously in Detroit. He spent 4 years with the wings, left and then was brought back past his prime, at the ripe age of 35. No one was angry the first time he was around, but his second time around we all knew it was going to be a train wreck. Weiss is 5 years younger then Mikael was when we signed him, and he has been a lot more consistent goals and assists wise over his career. You can go look at your numbers and pretend you know what you are talking about all you want, but those of us who actually watch hockey know what we're talking about.

Yes, Weiss could end up being a bust, but is not even remotely close to the same situation, the only thing the two have in common is they are both nhl players being paid by the red wings.

I think it comes down to how much us fans feel we "know" a player and what their abilities are. We know our Wings well and what they're capable of. We have expectations for them. High and/or low.

When it comes to Weiss, I'd bet the majority (me included) have seen very limited amounts of what he can do. Having a career in Florida and being injured the last couple years has really limited his exposure.

All I can do is look at the point totals, his career numbers and highlights as well as hear opinions and base most of my view of the player off that.

That's what I feel is the difference in those situations and gives Weiss a longer leash (for now).
